Beyond cool Mike......pun intended. Sea smoke occurs when very cold air moves over relatively warmer water, causing the moisture from the water to rapidly condense into fog as it reaches the cold air. In this video we had the perfect combination of these factors: 1. Large temp difference between the air and the water 2. Light winds 3. Saturated warm air with very high moisture content What a slow departure. About as slow as you can get and yet still be considered moving. Gave more time to take it all in. Hopefully you are thawed out by now. Even the Boatfriends Snowman decided to stay home!

Hey Mike and All the Global Boat Friend Nation, from a 15 degree Bismarck. Just saw this video, and you know what Mike this is without a doubt in the top 5 videos you have ever done. I mean talk about a veritable plethora of things going on at the same time with the smoke, fog , search lights, wind, city lights, and you can literally feel the cold…… If there was an Oscar for special effects for boat videos, well here is your winner my friend. This ASC Monster sailing on the Big Lake with these kinds of conditions begs the prayers for the safety of the good ship and crew… Yet the boat passes and noise you hear is the wind, talk about mind boggling. The Nation is getting some special videos this year about the power of Mother Nature on the Big Lake in the wintertime. It is a Glory to behold, yet the danger is even more to be respected… I really don’t have words to describe this other than to say this was a masterpiece, and we all thank your efforts to bring it to us!!!!!!!……. Later Man……

It was a once-in-a-lifetime sight and I figured you'd be there to recap it. I saw a guy in a reddish jacket, which I thought might have been you but regardless, what a show it was! Up until May of this last spring, I've been in professional theater and in a hundred years, this could never be replicated on stage! Keep up the great work, Mike, although I'm guessing you'll be closing the season soon. And while it's nice to see ice on the Big Lake again, stay warm and the best to you over the coming holidays.//Joel

Wow wow wow Mike, this might be your best work to date. Totally surreal conditions that really enhanced the watching experience, would loved to have been standing there with you. What a beauty of a boat she is. Thanks for braving the brutal conditions to share this with us. And as ever , fair winds and following seas to the Capt. and crew.

Amazing video! The sea smoke and all the other variables with the environment create a photographers ideal scenario for photos. American Spirit holds a special place in my heart when the captain called out to us and gave us a salute at the Superior Entry. Thanks for the video Mike it was so awesome seeing this ship come through from your viewpoint!

Hey Mike! How are you doing, brother! Happy Friday night. It’s going to warm up in Duluth on Sunday. There might be a little bit of snow tomorrow there’s going to be a lot of ships going through Duluth tomorrow. The Sykes will be there tomorrow. I wanna thank you for your support with this channel and being such a passionate person with the ships in general. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the cold in this video. I really will never forget the beautiful scenery with that shit. It was so amazing Mike.

@ I’m doing great just currently watching some Duluth Harbor Cams, listening to the scanner and chatting! It’s going to warm up down here in Southern Wisconsin but it was no where near as cold as up there!

a ghostship coming out of the smoke only to disappear back into the smoke as it heads out onto the lake. That's what I thought Mike when I watched this.
