Written for the 1982 Falklands war about a soldier dying, surrounded by his comrades, it is held in high regard by most British veterans and used at many of our funerals. I've got it penned in for mine when the time comes.

I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits live in Australia back in the 80's as a teenager.... one of the best concerts I have ever seen in my life.... Mark Knopfler makes that guitar sing.....

Being 64 and still attending concerts fairly regularly, I keep saying, "If I could just see Dire Straits, I would die a happy girl"! He is in my top two favorite guitarists, the other being Derek Trucks! But M.K. has like a call and respond type style the I really dig. It's like he sing a verse or line and his guitar plays a response.

It is about the futility of war and the people you are trying to kill are your fellow brothers living on one world under one sun but living in different ones. When they are done trying to kill each other, for reasons unknown to them, they return to their valleys and their farms and they will no longer burn to be brothers in arms. Just fellow members of the same world under the same sun instead of living in different ones.

I BEG OF YOU ! ! , please listen to Home Free’s cover. They do an A Cappela version that honors Mark’s song, yet brings out the heart twisting feelings and meaning of the song. They show the thankfulness of a wounded soldiers last words for not being left alone, to his anger, pain, and confusion of what happened, to his last goodbye. Their song goes to his fade to black, THEN ends with two notes that sound like a pipe-organ! Chills from beginning to end.

I have seen a lot of people recommending home free's cover, so I listened to it. It's decent cover, very different and because it is A Capella it loses so much for me. another comment here says Mark is but the narrator and his guitar is the singer, and that is so true. So the Home Free version leaves me completely indifferent I'm afraid. This is one of those songs that it would require an exceptional artist/band to cover and even come close to doing the original justice, Home Free isn't it.
@georgefisher1995

@@paulwood5803 so sad you don’t hear the true meaning, and feeling of the song, but oh well, we all have different ears, and emotions. This is a general observation, not a specific one to this video. I’ve noticed an increasing amount of these ‘reaction to listening to ‘x’ for the first time’ KZbin videos. The thing that always amazes me, is how do folk sufficiently ‘into’ music enough to do KZbin videos on the subject, get to adulthood without hearing these really big famous groups??? This isn’t intended as a criticism at all, I am just genuinely surprised at the ages of people hearing really big well known bands for the first time. Observation no.2 - specific to this video, were you reacting to the music, or the music & video? It might make a difference, one appeared to listen with eyes closed so was 100% music, the other two seemed to be focused on a screen and reacting to the video. Both are valid, although I think having the mix like this may result in inconsistent reactions. It might be better to listen / react to just the music first, then maybe watch (& listen) to the video after? Just a thought. Suggestion, if you have not done so already, listen to Telegraph Road by Dire Straits, personally, I think this is one of their greatest.
