Yes you need to upload photo. For new born then do not mind much but if you have doubts then best to take some help for example : snappy snap No, vfs does not provide photo service as I remember

Yes you can do it with mobile and background should be light colour ( i guess not white , do check the site once) but eventually you need a photo for passport so you can get it clicked from studio and use it for both purposes
