As someone born and raised from Queens. I would ride the E train for 4 years to 50th Street to get to high school in Hell's Kitchen and downtown to my afterschool job in the original World Trade Center, 1986 to 1990. This is traveling music. In your headphones as you ride and make moves around the city, from Bk, Harlem and the Bx... lol, I was everywhere. As I got older, these type of musical impressions became my 'pushing-the-pedal' soundtrack for going up and down the FDR, the Westside Highway, onto all the city's many bridges into every boro and back on the LIE or Belt Parkway to head home. This sound is the core of my NYC existence, 😌 even as I graduated into neosoul and all sectors of jazz. For at that core is the young 16 year-old with door-knocker pyramid shaped earrings, a two-finger ring with my name engraved, a brown Gucci bookbag and red hightop Reeboks, with a Salt-n-Pepa asymmetrical haircut. 😏

All the obscure break records/ foreign records were scooped up by many good producers way before internet/KZbin and outrageous prices. Everybody had a good ear for sounds. No plugins. (Minimal) clearance issues if you chopped enough and layered sounds. Hardware/physical touch to machines, vinyl, using your ears to beat match and figuring out timestretch. It was untapped. Like a jazz renaissance. I love it, forever.
