Gears serves 2 purposes: One is to efficiently utilize torque applied while climbing inclined surfaces with help of low gears Second is to translate more rpm with same pedalling with help of high gears. For fitness or daily rides of 10-15 kms gears may not be necessary. The size of single speed gear of non geared cycles, is smwhere amongst the middle gear of geared cycles.
