Anybody trying this, just a tip, rough up the sticks a lil with a sanding sponge, so the dip can stick better, and if you are really into it, buy the the clear glosifier top coat from plasti dip and top it over once or twice after your color. The downside is that you'll have a glossier finish, but it makes the dip a lot harder and durable. Just my two cents from past experience. Great vid..

Ive' tried this with Planti-Dip and love the results. I was a bit more impatient so I used the Plasti-Dip liquid and just dipped the sticks in the can. You get a thicker coat quicker. Something else that I've found works great is heat shrink tubing. Just slide on and heat. It's really durable and by far the most cost effective option. One 3-foot section of heat shrink costs $3.45 at your local MicorCenter Computer store. Depending on how far up I take the grip, I can get two or three pairs of sticks with one section.

They (3M?) also make heat shrink in lots of colors and with heat activated glue in the core (less colors though). The glue doubles the price. A narrow ring of super glue at each end would work as well. If they start to "feel funny" (loose), reheat to reshrink. them.

you can also re-apply and renew the worn off coating of a coated snare head with Rustoleum Textured white paint. it's virtually the exact same coating as Remo has on their heads.

Interesting idea: two different colors. I have a tendency to switch my sticks from hand to hand. I think they ware a little better. Maybe two colors will help keep up with the rotation. IDK..gonna try it out though. Thanks for the vids and please keep it up.

Just got an idea - what if you use Plasti-dip as a drum dampener? You could spray some onto your heads (thus controlling the amount of dampening), it would stay - and you are free to peel it off wheen it's not needed anymore. Might even work with cymbals..

I've been using VicGrip for a little while, and in my experience, the place it _starts_ to tear is at the end of the stick I use most on the snare drum. The end grinds against my leg and once it's worn through, the coating starts to fly around. After a few rehearsal sessions with my bands there are little red pieces all over the floor. Once there's a hole, the rate of wear increases from just the normal usage. I probably rehearsed ten to fifteen 2-hour passes before the first hole, but after that it only took about ten to fifteen more to wear off almost all the coating except a few centimeters on the middle of each stick.
@zash008
@zash008 8 жыл бұрын
there are so many uses you will find for plasti-dip it is worth spraying your sticks yourself...you will find things around your house or car to use plast-dip on so you will always have some plasti-dip handy anyways and thus cost virtually no extra money spraying your own sticks. PLUS you can spray your sticks again later if you want. PLUS if the plasti-dip starts to wear off you will likely not notice a loss in gripping anyways. It doesn't take much plasti-dip to get a good grip... As a side note you can also buy plasti-dip in a can with a lid so you can actually "dip" your sticks and have a thicker coating if you want.

I either buy sticks cheap in bulk and spray with plasti dip or I buy singles for special occasions those are usually promark 2bs but something I have done a little of is flex seal (ran out of plasti dip while making a batch was all I could find) its more soft and cushiony you might want to try some.

Not sure if I'm just hard on gear... But I tried this last weekend. I used duplicolor brand so that may be the issue. I'm in a country bar band and we play anywhere from 4 to 8 hours a weekend and after the first night they were down to wood on almost the entire stick. I have never used the Vic grip sticks so maybe they wouldn't hold up either. I usually use the Vic wrap stuff. Last me a few nights. Just expensive. Either way. Great videos.... Thanks for the content.

I would only do two things differently: figure out a way to hang the sticks with the butt pointing down (just incase there is any drip), and I would not cover as much of the stick with the coating. I tend to grip further back on the stick and i would not want to hit rims or cymbals with the coating which goes past the half way point on the stick. This is an awesome idea though. I may buy a brick of Goodwood 7A sticks and coat them, since I usually play larger sticks.

Pretty good review but you missed all the signature models and their respective colours too. I personally wouldn't go out and buy a pair of really thin VF stocks and coat em with black plastidip to mimic the Questlove sticks as they last a really long time for me and it's just not worth the time making my own. That's my situation and opinion though. Great job with the video bro

One of the things i would like you to consider on the durability and feel is the type of plasti-dip you chose to use. The spray can plasti-dip is thinner to spray out of the nozzle, and in my opinion not as durable as the actually plasti-dip that comes in the can. This link is to plasti-dip that would likely feel and function more like the vic-grip. You simply dip it into the container for diy tools handles etc. this is the kind you actually dip in. www.amazon.com/Performix-12213-Plasti-Dip-Black/dp/B00I9SK8XY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1475094781&sr=8-3&keywords=plastidip

Judging by his durability test I would say no. As far as cymbals go, I'm not sure why you would strike THAT far down the stick (maybe you would idk), and I think cross-sticks might be a problem-if u like to click the rim w/ the butt of the stick for heavier sound

Exactly. Guess what Vic Firth uses? That's right...Plastic Dip.
@zash008
@zash008 8 жыл бұрын
there are so many uses you will find for plasti-dip it is worth spraying your sticks yourself...you will find things around your house or car to use plast-dip on so you will always have some plasti-dip handy anyways and thus cost virtually no extra money spraying your own sticks.

I've been doing the plasti-dip thing for a long time, actually. I use the Vic Firth Terry Bozzio TB Phase I sticks, which they don't offer in vic-grip.. So I did exactly what you did here. Although, I learned after a short while that the Spray Can dip does leave a little bit of a rough surface, and I didn't like that.. So I bought the actual dip can, that comes with a removeable top (used to dip tool handles and what not) Although that left a rather thick coating, so I bought the Naptha product used to thin out plasti-dip.. it worked perfectly. Now I have a smooth surfaced, perfect grip for my sticks! I'm glad I saw this video so I could give my input on the subject! Great video, man!

More advantages to Plasti-dip spray or dip; - You have control over how much of the stick is covered AND how thick. - You could color-key different sticks., that way sizes/matched pairs would be immediately recognizable. - You can re-coat. (I've had the vic-grip peel on a pair) Do sand sticks before coating as others have said.

Maybe if the sticks you were going to "treat" had a light sanding to rough up slightly, the spray may stay on better???

Great video on the plasti-dip. For a rew years now I have used shrink tubing for electrical wires over my sticks and I love the feel. Durability is off the charts. Reuse them after I break the stick. Lots of elbow grease to remove from a stick that it shrunk to, but totally worth giving a test. 👍

The vic grips and other dipped by MFR sticks are literally dipped, not masked and sprayed on. Thats why the lines are wonky.

Wow, drum sticks are so cheap in The United States. Here in Europe the same pair of sticks is almost twice the price. But that's probably because they are made in the U.S

I have a question, if plastic dip is "cheaper," because plastic dip can spray more, you still have to buy a new pair. Would that cost more still?

cl _3an with 1 can of plasti dip, you could make lots of drumsticks, lets say if you made 5 plasti dip with the cheap vic firth sticks, and bought 5 of the special vic firth sticks. The ones you made are going to be cheaper cause of the money you saved buying the normal sticks as compared to the special ones. 🙂

Do gripped sticks have any other pros to them apart from them being less drop-able? I don't often drop sticks and I've used a pair of these once and I wasn't really swayed towards either way of the decision.

I tried the 5a nylon vic grips months ago and I cant put them down! Never got 1 blister and the trick is I have never held sticks very tightly in all my years of drumming. Finesse and control are key! If you're a heavy hitter and grip sticks tightly, then that's where the blisters come into play . I do use wood sticks yet but these are definitely my favorite
