DAMN!!! That prison is nicer than a lot of motels I've seen! Def a LOT nicer than a lot of people's homes in the projects 'round here... and there's NO comparing a shithole like East Baton Rouge Parish Prison (EBRPP) to THAT immaculate-looking German facility (and that's probably just a very typical, unremarkable, average-quality prison by THEIR standards). But what most Americans don't realize is that this stark contrast can be seen in much more than just prisons... it's pretty much the case with EVERYTHING!!! Last time I was in Germany I spent a couple months there, and had begun getting used to the sights/sounds, the food, the "atmosphere" and also speaking German, exclusively. So coming back home to the U.S. was kinda sad and felt very odd... When I landed at Chicago O'Hare Int'l Airport, I started getting a (growing) weird feeling... my "welcome home party" was having security single me out (for no reason) and getting harassed and interrogated for about an hour and a half, causing me to miss my flight back home to New Orleans. Couldn't help but notice the irony that we fought Germany in WWII to destroy the Nazi police state, only to establish our own here! Then, I had to find a cab, and ended up getting a room at a 5-star Hilton Hotel for the night. Seeing America again through eyes which had now grown accustomed to a modern metropolitan habitat was quite a shock: Chicago looked to me like a diseased, dying city... a decaying, has-been deteriorating into ruin. It was like seeing the memorial of a once-great civilization. Stepping into the Hilton from the streets of urban Chicago was like entering an unlikely oasis of wealth and luxury in a ghetto. After staggering sore-legged and exhausted into my beautifully furnished room and throwing my luggage down, I went on the balcony to have a smoke and looked around... then I thought of a gooda analogy to describe what I was seeing and feeling. America had fought against but inadvertently "caught the contagious infections" of both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union... and I was basically seeing the same luxury/ghetto contrast that a Soviet "state aristocrat" or inner-party member would see; Inside a little bubble of comfort and luxury inside a sea of poverty, crumbling infrastructure and urban decay.

There about to be a ton of American comments about how luxurious those cells were. It is sad when a German prison looks more appealing than your apartment... hard times in these streets.

Gotta say, kinda makes being a gangster less glamorous when you know you'll get sent to such a nice prison.

the most angry part when i saw you changed ayran with beer cause he talked before about god and believe me he is a good guy he said joghurtdrink and they just translated it as beer.. much respect.

@shifta18710 жыл бұрын
What happened to the translation? I'm a German native. A lot was partially wrong and some of it just plain wrong! That's incredibly unprofessional. How can I trust the translation to be right on languages that I don't understand in other Vice videos?

the translation is very bad. how can you mistake ayran for beer? or how can vice magazine spell the names of other big german rappers wrong? and more. on the other hand, it's a nice documentary as always and i enjoyed watching it, an i'll keep watching them!

That jail looks really comfortable, especially considering that "hardened" criminals are kept there.
@shifta18710 жыл бұрын
Well, that's how you can reintroduce criminals into society. American prisons are only designed to get the criminals back into prison ASAP, so the privately owned prisons can make even more money.
@gerki66663 жыл бұрын
Been saying US has a 3rd World like Prison system no matter over there the inmates almost go back to jail in nearly every case while in germany even the worst mostly get rehabilitated and end up becoming normal working citizens in the end.
