Fun fact: Vietnamese is what’s called an inflection language, meaning that words that sound the same can get a different meaning from a changed inflection. Anja Cullen You’d know by virtue of the fact that the average person will exploit every advantage you allow them. In any event, Lisa actually explains what much of that perception is about. The issue to her wasn’t really the different language. Vietnamese, like many other East Asian languages, varies its tone to change the meaning. English speakers use the same to express emotions. This means that they can sound angry, sarcastic, taunting or whatever while actually talking about something boring. If you spoke like that in English you’d make some enemies. That said, many of those reviewers likely earned the gossip that likely did occur. From what some technicians tell me, certain Salon clientele are very entitled and come with hostility, unrealistic demands, and a willingness to scam employees for free services.

Gotta think of Vietnamese salons like barbers. They have conversations about everyday real world things that happen. Add in the fact that the tone of a 1st gen Viet is much louder and we speak with a lot of expression. Customers, dont feel weirded out asking what they are talking about. Some employees that have been living there for several years can explain and you guys can join in the fun, but if they cant explain just have sympathy and understand that employee has most likely recently immigrated to the US.

I come from a family of Vietnamese refugees and almost all of my mom and her siblings had their own nail salons. My mom faced not only the same challenges that this nail salon did, but a few others, like working all alone in the salon while the liquor store next store was constantly robbed, fearing she could be next. But she did not have the luxury at the time to just quit. She had a family to support. When my family worked our way to be able to let her sell her shop, it was a relief. Even though her shop was closed, we've had some of our closest friends come from that shop. To this day, they remain close friends of our family. I'm first generation Vietnamese-American and I am so proud of our family's humble background. This video definitely is a reminder of the hard work of not only my mom, but the rest of our family who owned nail salons. It was a vehicle to get our seeds planted here in America and to create a better life for ourselves. To Lisa: Con muốn gởi co Lisa nhiều may mắn. Chúc mừng có nhiều thành công được hơn 27 năm!

I feel like with a camera crew in the salon the experience is obviously going to be a bit different (no crap talking, patience, effort levels, niceness and politeness of staff etc) so I don’t feel like this is a fair representation of what they’re like or how they operate on a normal business as usual day, but hey, in this video everyone did seem nice and put in effort etc
@BubblemouseM4 жыл бұрын
I do feel like if you go to a salon run and worked by Vietnamese ladies that them talking to eachother in Vietnamese is 100% fine and acceptable. If people don’t understand the language and feel uncomfortable they don’t have to go there. These ladies don’t have to speak in their second language to one another just to make you feel less insecure, they’re just communicating with eachother in their native language and that’s more efficient for them. If you want to go to a salon where everyone speaks English that’s totally cool! But I think shaming someone for communicating with their peers, who all speak the same language as them, for efficiency sake is kinda mean :/ and tbh if you didn’t understand the language how would you know they’re talking rude about you? You can’t just assume, and I think a lot of the time it’s a projection of someone’s own insecurities because they don’t understand and human beings naturally have a fear of things they can’t understand and usually assume the worst. Just my two cents 🥺

The drills not being used on natural nails, in my opinion, should be true! After removing my gel polish, if I don't go back in to get it redone right away, my natural nails are scratchy, thin and break easily due to the over sanding they do prior to gel polish. The second I saw the reviews about the employees speaking Vietnamese I knew that a bunch of those reviews came from some racist white ladies. I’m sure some are legitimate complaints but most seem to be rude customers who couldn’t handle that employees spoke to each other in a language they couldn’t understand, have no concept of the way other languages sound and how they’re different from English, and assume that everything being said is about them (ya know bc they’re the most special person and everyone wants to talk about them). Even the reviews with photos I’m a bit wary of. They seemed to be a lot of manicures that got messed up in some way, probably truly from their own doing like not waiting til their nails were dry enough. (I’ve literally done this and messed up my own manicure on a couple occasions but it was 100% my own fault.) I’m sure it’s also a lot of jumping on the bandwagon and giving shitty reviews after seeing the other bad reviews. Idk. No business is perfect and obviously they knew they were being filmed, but the majority of those reviews complaining about the language, the speed, quality, etc. are racist or demanding more than they’re paying for (since they’re clearly not willing to pay for more, but still want the same result). And the comment about the employees being slaves also feels VERY racist. They seemed like really nice people here. It’s amazing that when you treat others, even people working for you, like human beings, the experiences tend to be a lot better.

As someone who grew up with a father who speaks Vietnamese I can say she is speaking facts. The sounds made while speaking the language are nothing like English and can be easily misunderstood emotionally. It’s not just Vietnamese either, if a third wheel in any situation and the other 2 wheels are speaking a way you can’t understand it is so easy to think the worst. It seems like a good business with some snobby customers.
