Football's Most Dangerous Rivalry

Күн бұрын

The rivalry between football clubs Rangers and Celtic goes past typical name calling and dives into violence, racial slurs and pure hatred.
The rivalry between Glasgow's "Old Firm" sides is the most famous in world football. It's the game's flagship loathing, proof of the power of the sport to inspire profound levels of tribal loyalty and a near-Pavlovian revulsion at anything to do with a rival. We examine the situation and try to get a handle on the political, religious, and national identity clashes that have shaped the rivalry, speak to fanzine editors on both sides of the divide and travel with the Bhoys' away support to a match at Tannadice.

I wasn’t allowed a Celtic top until I was older. My mum was worried incase I got attacked. That was back in the 90’s though when it was a real possibility. Nowadays its not as dangerous but things still happen. To this day though when I wear a Celtic top there will always be people who give you a disgusted look or be off with you. I’m sure it’s the same for people wearing Rangers tops.

the law regarding racism and hoolganism at football "did" help not a lot, but it was changing things around.. but then red tories and blue tories went about to have it struck down and the bullshit returned, I believe hollyrood is set about trying to implement it, as most of us in scotland agree something has to be done about this nonsense, and while it's not great it is at least something.

A few years ago, my brother was in Glasgow. After checking into his hotel, he went to bar next door for a beer. As soon as he walked in the entire bar went silent. Almost immediately guys burst up out of their seats and advanced on him. The bartender pointed at my brother: "YOU!! GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!!" Turns out my brother had stumbled into a Rangers bar wearing a green jacket! He had no clue of the rivalry. He said, "What the hell did I do?!?" Instantly the bartender realized the situation: "EASE UP LADS! HE'S A YANK!" My brother said, "Yeah. I'm from California." The whole bar relaxed, and several fans came over to explain to my brother the rivalry and it's history...and they bought all his beers for him too! They ended up being really cool to him. He later told me he thought he was going to wake up in a hospital, or worse.

Old Glesga joke: An American tourist is lost on Paisley Road West while trying to get to the Southern General Hospital. He goes into a local pub and asks the bartender: "Uh, do you know the quickest way to the Southern General from here?" Some linguists class Scots as a separate language to English, others class it as a dialect of English. Most Scottish people mix Scots grammar and vocabulary with standard British English grammar and vocabulary, to different degrees. It's quite common in many languages that there are dialects that can be considered close languages, which most other speakers can't understand.

That's because they moved their focus from making interesting documentaries like these or about political conflicts that mainstream media never really report about to something only liberal hippies would watch

This was a really great docu-video! I went to Glasgow for the first time last summer and my sister and I on the bus into the city ended up sitting next to these two local men who were best friends, despite one being a Celtic fan and the other a Rangers fan. We’re Canadian and knew next to nothing about the rivalry that they explained to us, and later that day in the city I recall seeing a lot of people wearing the football shirts of both teams. I think the fact that they were able to put their differences aside shows that ignorance can be cured when you make an effort to get to know different people instead of just keeping away. There’s a long history there that shouldn’t be forgotten but maybe some traditions that don’t need to be continued. Glasgow was a beautiful city too!

Being an American I thought people are crazy about sports teams here, this takes the cake. Although this I think is much more of social/cultural/political rivalry than the actual Football. Please correct me if Im wrong.

+ravi8490 It's not so much the sport, rather the history behind it. In the USA sports teams don't really have that much history to it other than it was founded for some local lads to have fun and then grew in to a big thing. But this rivalry isn't to do with football as much as it is to the history of the cultures that both club represents. At one point, the British Protestants (Rangers) invaded Ireland and subjugated the Irish Catholics (Celtic). The Irish fought back and thats how it is. Both sides feel they are in the right and the other is in the wrong.

+ravi8490 Nothing in American sports compares to the animosity that is Rangers and Celtic. They don't segregate the fans at American sporting events. In Britain, the visiting team's fans sit in a separate area from the home fans, and they often get a police escort to and from the train station/car park for their own safety. In Scotland, when Rangers and Celtic play, the number of hospital visits due to violence triples.

People think Celtic and rangers is giant. It is in Glasgow but nobody cares about it. If your American you need to look at American football fans. Singing real songs, embarrassing dancing, moaning. That is pretty much what happens. If you have ever been to this match correct me if I'm wrong, I'm comparing to the fans during the match. Wigan and Bolton is bigger than this for the fans. This is why... We fight all the time, smoke goes off unless the stewards are on guard for checking, loud fans, chanting towards players and fans.

Im irish (from the republic) a raised catholic (but not practicing) and a celtic fan and if I met a brittish, protestant, rangers fan in the pub id put my arm round him, sing songs of our past and buy the man a drink. Hatred is pointless and gets us nothing but hardship, we need 2 band 2gether and fight the corruption of our governments and not each other.

cotland has only 8.3% of the UK's population. 8.3%! Remember this important figure... 8.3% But we DO have... 32% of the land area. 61% of the sea area. 90% of the fresh water. 65% of the natural gas production. 96.5% of the crude oil production. 47% of the open cast coal production 81% of the untapped coal reserves 62% of the timber production 46% of the total forest area 92% of the hydro electric production 40% of the wind wave and solar energy production 60% of the fish landings 30% of the beef herd 20% of the sheep herd 9% of the dairy herd 10% of the pig herd 15% if the cereal holdings 20% of the potato holdings ...obviously 100% of the Scotch Whiskey industry. We have a... 17 billion pound construction industry 13 billion food and drink industry 10 billion business services industry 9.3 billion chemical services industry A 9.3 billion tourism industry 7 billion financial services industry 5 billion aeroservice industry 4.5 billion pound whiskey exports industry 3.1 billion pound life sciences industry Scotland still has 350 million pounds worth of textile exports We have 25% of Europes wave and wind energy potential. And finally we are blessed to have 1.5 trillion pound worth of oil and gas reserves. All of this, yet only 8.3% of The UK's population... Whaow Scotland should be rich! IGNORANCE... If you hear anyone saying "I DONT LIKE ALEX SALMOND" or "I DONT LIKE SNP"... THIS VOTE IS ABOUT SCOTLAND'S RIGHT TO ELECT ITS OWN GOVERNMENT... IT HAS NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH ALEX SALMOND OR THE SNP. DONT LET POLITICAL IGNORANCE RUIN THIS OPPORTUNITY. Do you know... This is the UK's legacy of success in our history of being better-together is as follows... The UK has the 3rd lowest pensions in the 34 OECD countries of the world The UK has the single most expensive childcare in the European Union The UK has the second lowest-paid economy in the entire developed world The UK has the 3rd longest working hours in the EU The UK has the lowest number of holidays in the EU The UK has the 8th highest gender inequality pay gap out of the EU's 28 countries The UK has the highest likelihood of poverty in disablement in the EU The UK has the highest rail prices in Europe The UK has the second highest housing cost in Europe The UK has the highest fuel poverty rates in Europe. The UK is the 4th highest country of wealth inequality in the entire planet! But surely these awful figures cannot be possible when you read the following Scottish statistics... Now, finally, did you also know that in all of the UK's elections for Westminster ever!... Not one vote cast in SCOTLAND has ever mattered! Because of the Westminster numbers, whatever government England votes for, the UK gets. So we have no democracy here!!! 4 decades of tory rule that we voted against is proof enough, and our defiance was punished by the closure of all the mines; closure of all the steelworks; closure of all the shipyards losing hundreds if thousands of jobs. The term used by Westminster's Thatcher when these industries needed some assistance was "let the markets decide". Funny how when the greedy bankers collapsed everywhere they were bailed out to the tune of over a trillion pounds of our money... Not a mention of "let the markets decide". FACTS: Fact: Scotland has an oil boom waiting to happen on the West Coast, but Michael Hesaltine signed a cessation of any form of oil exploration in the entire area in the 80's to make way for nuclear submarines which Scotland doesn't want! Fact: Scotland has shown its revulsion time and time again to nuclear weapons but they place them here against our countries wishes. A recent contingency report was carried out a out the feasibility of relocating them in Portsmouth. The report stated that it was unfeasible because the detrimental risk to the area of an incident was too high. (Ok for the Clyde though) Fact: Scotland, with only 1 Tory MP, was forced to take the shocking attack on the poor & disabled called The Bedroom Tax, even though as our nations government, Holyrood voted to utterly reject this awful tax on the poor. Westminster gave us it anyway! Fact: We are led to believe that the oil in our waters is finished and its a dying industry. Yet 13.5 billion has been invested by oil companies in the last 2 years alone! Fact: The Clair Oil Field is about to open, and on its own has over 650 million barrels which will be extracted over 20+ years with production reaching a hundred thousand barrels a day! Fact: Scotland gives more to Westminster than it gets back. Do you really think they'd be so keen to keep us if we were being subsidised like they'd have us believe? Fact: Westminster has amassed over £1.3 trillion debt and still growing at nearly £6000 a second. Thats another £516 million today alone which YOU will have to pay for. Fact: Of the 178 countries that have gained their own independence across this planet, not one single one of them has ever asked to reverse this independence, and very few of them have the assets we have. SCOTLAND, WHAT ARE WE SCARED OF? WE HAVE A CHANCE... WITHOUT A SINGLE BULLET BEING FIRED, WITHOUT A SINGLE DEATH... TO GET OUR FREEDOM AND INDEPENDENCE, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PUT A CROSS IN THE YES BOX. SCOTLAND, ITS TIME TO STAND UP AS A NATION AND VOTE YES ON THE 18TH OF SEPTEMBER... AND BECOME A FREE AND CARING NATION AGAIN!!! VOTE YES AND SET OUR COUNTRY FREE!!!! Y E S ! ! ! Y E S ! ! ! Y E S ! ! !

Not really. Honduras by the way had two players in Scotland-Emilio Izaguirre playing for Celtic and Arnold Peralta playing for Rangers.

Celtic is not Irish, Scottish are not Irish, and for people to be throwing around words like "Fenians" and blaming celtic for things the catholic church did, and not Celtic, or the Irish people for that matter, is not "banter". it's abhorrent, and shouldn't be done in this day and age. as an actual Irish man, born and raised in Dublin, I'd be extremely offended if someone called me a fenian or a taig. it's not "football banter", it's bigotry. I've been to Glasgow a good few times and I love Scotland, but things like this reflect badly on the country, which is really full of great people!

***** a fenian is someone loyal to the Irish free state (now known as the Republic of Ireland) it comes from the fenian brotherhood, which was the IRB and later became the IRA. The term fenian is not used to describe IRA members, and has now become a derogatory term for an irishman used by loyalists. If you go to Belfast in Northern Ireland, you'll see a lot of graffiti in Catholic areas saying "fenian bastards" or "fenian scum". Taig is basically the same with a different origin, they'll write K.A.T everywhere (if you get the bus from Dublin to Belfast, you'll see it in big letters as you enter the bus station) and that means "kill all taigs". They might consider it "football banter" but it's a lot more than that.

I wouldn't say a "vast majority", I wouldn't even say majority.. it's a pretty even 50/50 split. some areas with higher levels of loyalists, likewise with republicians, but it pretty much evens out. places like belfast are pretty even split, Derry on the other hand is around 70-80% republican, and some places like Millisle have population as high as 93.5% protestant, it all depends where you are.

"its hard to put your finger on it" really? i dont think its that hard to figure out. combine abject poverty and a two tiered society where the rich and the poor are vastly separated with religious and cultural friction and voila, you're more or less left with why glasgow and the west of scotland is the way it is. doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

Here in the US there was never much of a chance to view Scottish Premier League, but with the advent of the intarwebz we who sought out top flight Euro clubs could see a lot more. Several ago I became a fan of Celtic with Henrik Larsson scoring at an absurd rate. At the time I didn't know they were the Catholic side, myself being Catholic only made me more of a fan. Being of Irish heritage only strengthened that. Cheers from a Glasgow Celtic supporter in New Orleans!

My Dad was born in Aberdeen & my Mom in Glasgow. And after they married, my Dad, whether by choice or not became a dyed in the wool Hoops fan. Still following them religiously (until he passed away 2 years ago) from here in Canada since emigrating from the auld country in the late 50’s. Yet when my interest in the ‘Beautiful Game’ peaked & despite not having an Italian bone in my body, because the Serie A was/has & always will be very popular here in Toronto-Canada, I fell head over heels for AC Milan. A team I still proudly support to this very day. That said the more I read, watch & hear about this rivalry, the more I want to get a piece of it too. And of course by cheering on the lads in the green & white if & or when I do, as well.

This is a joke to me. I can guarantee that only a minority of Celtic fans are actually from Ireland because if they were Irish they wouldn't glorify the actions of the IRA in the North. I guarantee that that most Celtic fans couldn't point out Ireland on a map let alone understand the suffering and violence that the country has suffered during and after British rule. I live in Ireland and throughout my life here, I have met one Celtic fan and he doesn't hate Rangers because of politics or nationality, he hates them like every football fan hates the rival club. The Irish people don't go around shouting up the IRA and singing songs about all the "great" things the IRA have done in the North and if someone does do that then they are a minority and just looking for attention. Celtic fans should support Celtic because they love Celtic not because they have some relative from 1802 from and an island that they have never seen, they have no right to glorify the Troubles and the IRA because they have no idea about Irish history or how scarring it was for the people who lived through in the North and in the South. Your from Scotland so stop embarrassing Ireland by being such a bigot over something you couldn't possibly understand
@kristofermccormack6
@kristofermccormack6 8 жыл бұрын
Its an opinion and I hardly expect the scotish football fans to stop just because I said so. What did I say to annoy you? Do you honestly think that the recent activity of the IRA deserves admiration or the glorification that Celtic fans give it through song.
