In 2008, the first black president was elected in the United States and the worst financial crisis in almost a century brought the world’s economy to its knees. Since then, a form of domestic terror has been on the rise in America and abroad. But it’s not the kind of terror we’re used to hearing about.
Militia groups and neo-nationalists here and around the world have been growing bolder, more popular and more powerful. VICE's Ben Makuch investigates the origins of these militia groups and explores the driving force behind the militia movement today. In order to do so, he travels to the place where it all began: the Michigan State militias.

The British monarchy (which is also the Canadian one) is limited in what they can do by things like the Magna Carta, English Bill of Rights 1689 and various newer legislation. The US bill of rights actually stems from the English bill of rights and most of the US legal system is based off of English common law.

While the rioters destroyed thier own neighborhoods, the asian groups formed up to keep themselves safe. Its kinda funny, when you think about it. During Huricane Katrina, the police left, leaving militias and groups of people to protect thier homes and family. When the hurricane ended, and military returned, they took all the firearms (historical or not , they were all destroyed). Nicholas Jarrett When people who don't know a lot about firearms talk about them, they always go overboard by calling AR-15's a high powered assault rifle, when really, they aren't considered, by the engineers that design them, to be "high powered". My pistol joke references how these people mistake, or most likely intentionally refer to these pistols this way for the purpose of shock value. When you say a gun is automatic, that means that you can hold the trigger down, and the mechanism is designed to rapidly fire, and eject the casing. My point is that certain people use the word automatic when it is truly semi-automatic. I really cannot tell you if a lot of reporters do this for shock value, or if they truly don't understand the difference. Maybe a little of both, I suppose. Oh, and sorry that this comment is so long.

Also virtually zero of the legal class 3 firearms are used in crimes. People need to also understand.. These are veterans, they are fighters, warriors and when these guys come back home with a lifetime of experience in the military. Working in a coffee shop, as a mechanic or what have you.. It feels degrading, people ask veterans what they can do to help them cope and help them feel better and in reality this is exactly it. Stop criticizing these men, they aren't terrorist, they aren't crazy, they are American warriors. The best way to help a veteran that's struggling is to let them feel useful, let them feel like they are making a difference, let them feel like they are still protecting their country and people. Groups like these are what made the U.S.. The real threat to our country are the ones who don't understand American values and freedom, we aren't Europe, we aren't Canada, so stop comparing us to them, please. Let us be us!

She offers an outsider perspective. She doesn't agree with their beliefs and she thinks they shouldn't be doing what they do, but she understands that she can't stop them either. This militia, from the footage, aren't doing anything illegal. They are doing what many Infantry units in the National Guard are doing, but in a much more relaxed setting and without the rank structure and without the organization. These men are there of their own free will. Perhaps what they need to do is be learning hand to hand fighting techniques, learning and then practicing in first aid/paramedic training and how to join a local neighborhood gym and lose about 75 lbs. I doubt they're eating salads and fruit out in the woods that weekend. I also doubt they are trudging along on a 10 mile ruck march through the snow either, nor could they if their life depended on it in a limited specified amount of time.

All Americans should be grateful to have these groups committed to protecting them from whatever threat and for the fact that they may choose to carry arms. I live in western Europe, where I am not allowed the means to defend myself. If I do choose to defend myself I am very likely to be criminally charged, since our legal system only allows self defence in very specific situations. For instance, if a burglar breaks into my home and I club them over the head with a bat, I can be sure I will be charged for assaulting them. Just let that sink in for a moment, imagine barely being permitted to defend yourself and not being allowed the means to do so. Also imagine the hordes of refugees that have swamped Europe, carrying with them potential terrorists. That's what concerned citizens over here are dealing with. I admire the rights all Americans have and I hope to one day have those rights as well. God bless America.
