@@ohnowhathappend I don't think you understand how often the police are called on mentally ill people, who are completely non-violent. What ends up happening, is little autistic boys get shot by the police for having a fit, and schizophrenic men get shot for being paranoid, regardless of how unarmed or non violent they are. If you care about our police forces, you should want social workers to take over, because police stations are all ridiculously overworked and unprepared for said work.

Crime is up 50%! I live in south Minneapolis. This is my life. You can’t call the cops. The second night of the protest a woman was beat up and thrown out of her car and her car was stolen she had a baby with her and 911 said you gotta deal with it. We need more cops not less. More training.

I also live in south Minneapolis and I agree that getting rid of the police is a very bad idea. Last summer crime was insanely high. You could hear loud explosions from homemade bombs, gunfire. Cars were being stolen in the middle of day the with dogs or children in the back like it was grand theft auto. It’s easy to say abolish the police until the time comes that you need them. IMO I think they need more funding for proper training and they need to restructure a few things. Civilians on bicycles won’t stop a violent crime. America is in major danger if we continue down a path of trying to get rid of the police.

@@conlinbryant5037 The community has its own obligation to maintain it's strength. What they are doing ... its community watch. And it was an effective method until people started to get lazy. So it stopped and the cops had to fill that roll. Defunding the police has nothing to do with the community empowering the community. And like everyone interviewed said ... you dont' have to call the cops for everything, something they have been abusing previously. So yes what they are doing is good for the community. Cos you know the people in your own community. But it has NOTHING to do with defunding the cops. You just need people to stop being lazy and do a bit more. That is all. Agree with your last statement ... you cant expect things to go away without making changes. The change is not with the police but with the community. They started the community watch program again. And it will work to a certain degree. But they need to work with the police not against them to get the crime rates down again. Know when and how to call them, by talking to them, not just doing things separately. And you will see the results in no time. Crimes rates are up cos they refuse to call the cops at all right now. If i were the criminals, i'd go on a crime spree now with a gun. Nothing those people can do to stop me.

The cops training was to put his knee on peoples neck he was taught this and people tried to deny it. When the autopsy was performed they tried to prove that the knee on his neck caused his death wish isn’t true. I definitely think the cop should have called an ambulance to check that he was alright. Qualified immunity needs to change, officers need to be held accountable for their actions and they need WAY more training in conflict resolution and de-escalation tactics that don't involve threatening the citizen into submission. American policing literally makes no sense, it's excessively violent and is devoid of any communication. I always think back to the murder of Daniel Shaver, who feared for his life and was literally begging to not be shot. The officer was very aggressive, and wasn't willing to communicate. Many neighbors came out to watch the blaze, ohblivious to the fact that people walking back and forth carried valuables from the ransacked mini-marts. In the fray of the chaos I and the crowd looting behind me was approached by a lady wearing a BLM shirt. She said "Hurry everyone we need more people in the frontlines. We are being outnumbered by the cops!". To her surprise no one cared. Everyone went back to looting. Many small businesses and large alike were vandalized, hurted financially, and will never be the same. On the night of a fallen community I was there, the thoughtless looting will forever leave a scent in the air, the nights will be colder for family owned businesses here.

also they would need more funding for police. the police in my city can't even afford tasers. adding social workers to the mix would require a lot of funding. On the other hand the rich suburbs with little crime were overfunded and had to ask my friend to park their extra squad cars near their house. The places that are poor with the most crime don't get nearly enough funding so defunding the police could be a disaster. The way America works with schools and police and public services is that a lot of the funding comes from local taxes mainly property taxes for the local town so rich towns have good services and schools. Cities based on how they are so condensed and have poorer citizens get less funding so they get bad schools and public services. Its the same for funding in extremely rural areas. They have no money from housing so the schools and police force are underfunded as well. Defund the police is not the right approach for poor areas if we want to add social workers. We could easily defund the police in rich neighborhoods with no repercussions, but the money will just go to wealthy households in the form of tax cuts if not administered properly. If they get fearful they will just get private policing instead.

Not so simple! You're being quite disingenuous with ur assertion of how easy it is to be a part of a law enforcement agency. Individuals must get thru the training process, providing they can clear a background check. A misdemeanor of perjury alone or act of dishonesty will automatically disqualify you even if the record has been expunged!

I took criminal justice classes in college, and in one for our final project we had to build a police department for a town given a population and budget. And we had to include EVERYTHING. Every single cost associated. By far and away the most expensive thing is the people. Paying the salaries. This also makes training very expensive because you have to pay the people doing the training and the people being trained. Reformation starts and ends with training. Bottom line. Defunding the police will literally take you further away from your goal. Trust me I am all for reform and I think it’s needed very very badly, but defunding is not the answer. I understand the calls to implement more social programs to help with addiction and domestic violence so that the police don’t have such a heavy burden, and in that way they can be defunded, ONCE THOSE PROGRAMS ARE IN PLACE. It will take years to get them in place. The wheels of government practically turn backwards it’s so slow so in the meantime the best solution is more training. Making better cops. And that costs money.

The semantics shouldn’t be tricky. It should be fixed by being literal. That’s just one step tho. But it’s very clear how the policing system needs to be updated. But...Abolishing police? Nah. The military is funded with the idea to protect the country from outside terror. The police is funded with the idea to protect the country from inner terror. Just reorganize the training, the evaluations, the roles and the repercussions.

'Round 2021 I was with a youth program that basically took Seattle teens to Guatemala for a few weeks to do volunteer stuff likenminor construction and clearing out small trees and foliage from the coffee plantation of one of the program leader's families. I was talking with a lot of kids who participated in these protests, sometimes without the knowlege of their parents. One of the kids- we celebrated his 18th birthday during the trip- was tear gassed during one such protest. He told us how, when he got home and took a shower, the tear gas that was stuck in his hair fell down into his eyes. The experience was exactly as exceuciating as getting tear gassed a second time. Everybody wants to butt in on the conversation, because it's topical. You hear it on the news. And full disclosure, _I wasn't there._ I was not at any of these protests and my experience of the movement as a whole was positive. I went to the occupied block! It was great! We found a hat that said "make red hats wearable again!" But another thing I myself am white I live in a neighborhood where I do not encounter the police. And as far as I'm concerned, I actually have little at stake personally regarding the outcome of these events. In a way, I just _live_ here.

The Post said its team relies “primarily on news accounts, social media postings and police reports” in addition to its own reporting. This data does not include “deaths of people in police custody, fatal shootings by off-duty officers or non-shooting deaths.” The Post’s data shows police fatally shot 13 unarmed Black men in 2019, five more people than Kirk claimed. Also, police fatally shot an unarmed Black woman, Atatiana Jefferson, 28, on Oct. 12 in Fort Worth Texas. But the Post's database covers only shootings.
