2021 here, just watched it for the first time. Interesting that they didn't show Real Head's actual toy making process, just the painting. His stuff is super-expensive and very difficult to obtain these days, I wonder if he's upgraded to a bigger studio now?

Years on and this is still one of my favourite videos ever. I would really love more content or a series of profiles on different sofubi designers. I love how punk and DIY has found its way to physical toy art-object-media (???). Saving up to succumb to collecting in the years to come.

Very cool to see that they are all made by hand. That is very rare nowadays. Any toy you can buy at the store in the west is probably made by child labor in a giant factory in China or Southeast Asia.

One thing about Japan is that there is no stigma associated with toys being only for children. As an adult toy collector of godzilla sofubi- transformers- and star wars I run into this kind of judgment all the time. I feel it's healthy to buy something for the kid who grew up too fast. Do it if it makes you happy.

Insects in general (e.g. the Japanese beetle) are prevalent in the country. More so than just pets, they're also used as a medium for a lot of things.

Open an online store with a translated English option, and you will sell more .. Most companies in Japan are not trying to sell more , the restrain their sales to Japan . In a world with access to every products on the planet , Japan is really behind . I've been in a hobby where most of my items comes from Japan , I had to go thru proxi so many times in the last 10 years . If they would have opened their products to the rest of the world , their economy would be way better .
@Mentocthemindtaker3 жыл бұрын
Artificial scarcity keeps the toys expensive. They are so in-demand _because_ they are so hard to get. If Real Head opened up his store online then sure, he would sell more, but he would also have many people asking why he charges so much. His toys are very hard to get.
