Detained by Militias: Libya's Migrant Trade (Part 1)

Күн бұрын

In a desperate bid to seek a better life in Europe, thousands of refugees and migrants leave the shores of Libya and cross the perilous Mediterranean Sea every month. Over 2,000 people have died making the journey in 2015 alone.
The routes to and journey through Libya are also dangerous, however, and since the fall of Muammar Qaddafi in 2011, the country has struggled to achieve and maintain stability. Porous desert borders, rival fighters, and weak governance have left much of Libya in complete chaos.
With militias controlling large swathes of land, their attentions have turned to the people that cross their territories. The fighters assert they are bringing order to the country as they detain the refugees, yet these people’s lives have become valuable commodities to the militias as they try to solidify their positions in the country.
VICE News secured exclusive access to a camp outside Tripoli, run by a militia that has seized hundreds of migrants. Food is scarce, dehydration and disease is rife, and control comes in the form of whips and warning shots. The militia claims to have the migrants’ interests at heart, but what emerges is a very different story.
In part one of a two-part series, VICE News examines how Libya is struggling with the Mediterranean migrant crisis, where state-run detention centers are overcrowded and violent, and how government immigration controls are outsourced to militias, where they detain migrants en masse.

I guess democracy is more important than these things. That's why I will always support my new government which is against the Muslim brotherhood and the hypocrisy, stupidity of the west. We know exactly what games the U.S is playing. Obama can cry me another river.

***** I think you have troubles understanding me, so I will use big letters: I AM NOT SPEAKING ABOUT REFUGEES, I AM SPEAKING ABOUT THE SITUATION IN LIBYA. The civil war. The absence of a central government. The fact that Libya does not exist as a unified country any more. The fact that the refugees are being handled not by police, but by some bearded guys with guns. Also, switch to 6:31 for a second: "Even Libyans are leaving the country because they don't feel secure". Yes, East Africans shown on the video are not from Libya, but Libyans are running too.
@olterigo
@olterigo 9 жыл бұрын
Dmitrij Bugajev And why is it a problem? Libya did not exist for long times as it existed under Ghadafi but was created by uniting 2 separate historical areas. Ghadafi kept it together through violence. Either way, BMTH0084 is right. Europeans should enjoy their new friends. Europeans have meddled in the Middle East for so long, should reap some of what they have sown.

The Libyans are also in a sticky situation trying to prevent illegal migrants from getting to Europe, but not having the money or infrastructure to look after them or send them back. Europe doesn't want them here so they are stuck in limbo, but they should at least be treated with dignity and respect as they are human beings, not animals. The EU should at least provide funding so the Libyans can look after them better until a solution is found.
@seanhastings4432
@seanhastings4432 Жыл бұрын
Decent points, but extra funding won't prompt those militiamen to start viewing black people as human beings. It's one thing to lack resources, it's another thing to treat people worse than you'd treat livestock because they happen to be different from you. Funding won't undo dehumanization and commonly-held prejudice. That's a cultural problem.

I wonder if some of this sorrowful videos are even shown at the African Union summits or its just business as usual for the dictator's annual jamborees. This is very shameful when we have Africa with the best arable land for crop farming and yet our have to suffer like this. People running away from their countries to go for enslavement to their former and neo-colonisers. This is a tragedy that will be told for a very long time.

@@jonanaseka1300Very true my friend. ------------------------ And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?" To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: `God, I thank you that I am not like other men--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, `God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." (Luke 18:7-14) ------------------------------ The Pharasisees perfectly describe the attitude of the many commentors in this video who exalt themselves or feel some sort of pride for not being in a terrible situation like this.

Goddamn this was tough to watch. Puts my indulgent American life into perspective. Leave it up to Vice to bring the world real fucking news. American news outlets barely touch on this situation with this kind of important and profound detail. My heart goes out to these people being treated lower than animals. What can you do though? The only thing I can think of doing in their position is staying in my home country and creating the change I want to see, by force if necessary. Of course that is just as naive a notion as any other.

Dudde in their country if you born poor you will die hungry, your struggle would be a daily fight to get water and food, let alone thinking to try anything make a change. These countries had been ruined by colonisation for decades, then were left without any support except supporting small minority of elites with Britiah and European money to rule over the poor majority. After the decline of British and European powers, U.S inherited those colonies, nothing had changed, they continued to be poor with mnority filthy rich rulling whom are loyal to U.S right wing.

Do you remember when you didn't know how to swim? You were terrified to go in the water. You saw the water as immediate death. These people walk and take random buses thousands of miles, then jump in small boats and go on thousand mile long journeys into the ocean without even knowing how to swim. One big wave and you're thrown overboard and dead. You really think they'd do all that if they just wanted a new fucking mattress?

More than 90% of these Africans have left home to make '''wealth''' the women, get pregnant purposely to give birth in Europe. I have seen the men sleeping on the streets of Italy for years, the women standing with cardboard, under their arm, waiting for the next '''customer''' what kind of a life is that ? This treatment by the Libyans have been all over Africa, and yet they keep coming. They should stay home hold their corrupt govts accountable, and build their own Europe. One African told a reporter back in Africa that he was glad he went to Europe, because he was able to build another room to his house, and marry another wife. I saw 77 yr old man in Africa who cleared acres of land to plant acres of trees, and vegetables , to care for his family

I wonder why the EU cannot make some kind of special program to allow the women to enter if they get a tubal ligation. That way they know it will just be one person who can try to work, and go home (EU should and can pay for a plane ticket home) if they cannot survive in Europe. Ideally the EU could provide for massive birth control programs in Africa and the Middle East while the US does the same in Latin America. That way finally these regions can develop instead of being over-populated and poor.

I was in Libya few months ago. This story it represent an experience of those who lack "social networks" in Libya. In this country you will see some Africans who are well of, secured a decent luxuary life, despite being nonLibyan, this is primarily due to them having established social networks in the city they live. In contrary, Libyans who lack social networks can be easy target for kidnappers, live in poverty and depreived. Libya currently is institutionally disintegrated. Having said that, the vast majority of people live a normal life, whether they are Africans, Egyptians or Libyans, they all go about their days as per normal, you will see them walking to work, at restaurants or streets. Nothing changed much in Tripoli ever since Gaddafi's days. Even Militias I hardly seen anyone who was not wearing police uniform and being armed.

Europeans are primarily responsible for this mess. But every since most African countries are independed. Our Leaders and those who are in charge of the Government have failed to provide for their citizens and now they are seeking for a better future else where which is actually a pity. In my view one of the most horrible thing for a human being is not to feel secure in his own country.
