The End of an Empire. The Birth of Two Nations. Based on a True Story. IN UK CINEMAS 3RD MARCH 2017
Directed by Gurinder Chadha, VICEROY’S HOUSE tells the true story of the final months of British rule in India.
Viceroy’s House in Delhi was the home of the British rulers of India. After 300 years, that rule was coming to an end. For 6 months in 1947, Lord Mountbatten (played by Hugh Bonneville), great grandson of Queen Victoria, assumed the post of the last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people.
The film’s story unfolds within that great House. Upstairs lived Mountbatten together with his wife (Gillian Anderson) and daughter (Lily Travers); downstairs lived their 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants. As the political elite - Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhi - converged on the House to wrangle over the birth of independent India, conflict erupted. A decision was taken to divide the country and create a new Muslim homeland: Pakistan. It was a decision whose consequences reverberate to this day.
The film is deeply personal to the director Gurinder Chadha, whose own family was caught up in the tragic events that unfolded as British rule came to an end. Her film examines those events through the prism of a marriage - that of Dickie and Edwina Mountbatten - and a romance - that between a young Hindu servant, Jeet (Manish Dayal), and his intended Muslim bride, Aalia (Huma Qureshi). The young lovers find themselves caught up in the seismic end of Empire, in conflict with the Mountbattens and with their own communities, but never ever giving up hope…

Its fascinating how a trailer or a movie could change someone's perception with the reality (or true story) about what really happened roughly 70 years ago. World may forget, but India (my Bharat) will not.

calihartley2010 I am a Pakistani. Half of the people in the comment section are from India and even though we have our differences but one thing is for sure that the British ruined us. Had it not been for the British India wouldn’t have divided. The British knew how to divide and rule and they did it so well that by the time they left we were do indifferent of eachother that there was no other option but to accept the two nation theory. And if learning “English” comes at the cost of our rights being usurped, us being enslaved and our resources being exhausted and manipulated under the watch of a tyranny, we were better off without it.

Since independence, the two nations have probably achieved everything except peace. I remember my paternal grand father who used to live in Amristsar in harmony with people of other religions told me that there was no violence, no hatred, no ill-will among the common people. I remember his eyes were filled with tears, each time he recalled the memories of partition and his living in Amritsar.

"Mother India" was created by the British, before the British, there was no united India. For your information, India means the land of Indus which is Pakistan, the British forced this name on everyone living in the subcontinent (Tamils, Bengalis, and Nepalese). Indus is a river that flows in Pakistan and Kashmir. The area now Pakistan and some Part of western India is geographically India rest were called Indians by the British.

Pls don’t comment before watching the movie. This movie was directed by the daughter an Indian migrant from Pakistan in 1947. And no the British did not have the best interest for Indians in their hearts. That’s why the partition took place. They did it only for the oil reserve of gulf as mentioned in the movie. Although lord and lady Mountbatten might have. Just watch the movie!

Same paternalistic take to flip the story around as if its India's need for independence from the British that caused India's issues today. India was England's biggest cash cow and when the British left they made sure to take everything, that's why it took so long ,not because they cared about the condition of Indian politics? Are you kidding me? Even now why do you think England is among the wealthy countries, because they built their own country on the backs of all those colonized and/or enslaved, and made sure they will not be able to compete with them for centuries. If you look closer England worked pretty hard to keep India poor from turning their garment industry that was popular prior to colonization, to just producing the raw materials to be sent to England where India's garment makers were deskilled and the industry collapsed. Then during WW2 England grated out 2(not sure if million or billion in current day money) direct funds as well as thousands of Sikh soldiers for their war. While Winston Churchill laughed at the letters sent from Bangalore missionaries asking for relief funds for the communities, asking them to let them "die out" and asked the missionaries to go to the more colony friendly areas. I could go on but I think I've made my point. This movie is an extended arm the Bollywood industries eurocentric values asking them to paint the European and Indian relationship in a neutral light, as a more revealing request asking India to favor the continuation of colonialism.

Yes, the story of modern England isn’t a pretty one. Still, it’s unfair to paint the British out as bloodthirsty and totally uncaring for their Indian subject. In fact, it wasn’t a one-way stream of riches flowing from India into Englishmen’s pockets, there were massive investments into India’s infrastructure (so say the economic historians). It’s often blamed on the British that they didn’t do a thing to solve the endemic famines but that isn’t true either. Even after independence, India wasn’t able to solve this problem until pretty recently. Yes, the story is practically worn out by now. India could have been a global superpower and yada yada had it not been for the white people. In 1700 India’s economy was clearly better than anything in England (keeping in mind that in 1700, the only real city in England was London, and the country was deeply impoverished). However, according to economic historians, the economies of the Indian states would have become obsolescent by the time of the industrial revolution, and would have in general been outstripped by the flourishing European economies. The real success behind England’s ascendancy was their institutional changes in the 18th century. Looting doesn’t automatically make a country overwhelmingly rich and powerful (the Spanish Empire is a prime example). Why do you ignore the fact that Indians willingly joined the British army? For people from the warrior castes of society, they made no bones about joining the British army, receiving the Crown’s bounty, and zealously fighting other Indians? You mentioned the Sikhs, and frankly there doesn’t seem to be much bad blood between the Sikhs and the Englishmen. The British held them in high regard. People blame the British for using “divide and conquer” methods, but is it really true that they kept you all apart? Sikhs in historical accounts had contempt for Hindus, and absolutely despised the Muslims from the north-western region of India, and the feeling was evidently mutual. What on earth kind of mentality is this where you hold the Englishmen responsible for every.single.thing that afflicts India? When the British attempted to change India’s culture, the Indians lashed out and revolted, and now they are being blamed for not revolutionizing the country by doing things such as abolishing the caste system or mending cultural boundaries. The narrative is that Indians couldn’t wait to be free of the British, yet there were so, so many collaborators in the Raj. The point isn’t that the English were angels and the Indians were sheep. You people have so much resentment, and you’ve been free for a long time. What a change of heart from the days of the independence movement. Yes, this is a shitty movie - no matter what perspective you view it from, and that’s really all it is.

bhai kabhi Factual history padha kro, sirf ncert ya biased historians n scholars ki selective readings padoge toh aise hi galat femiyo me rahoge, it was muslim league and their leader Jinnah who was demanding partition since from 1941 because they were claiming that we represent all muslims in India and our partition demand is all muslim peoples demand (since muslims don't like to live under the other religion peoples majority/dominance) which was denying by congress and when 1946 election was held in which muslim league won 90% of seats of muslim majority constitutencies they become more adhere to their demand of seperate state as their claim of representing entire muslims was seeming soliditary, thereafter riots started to happen and when Mountbatten reached India the suitation was very worst, he tried to convince Jinnah and do his best to mediate between Muslim League and Congress Leaders but fails and at last he has devised a partition Plan. Further Mountbatten as a governor-general of Independent India has helped to intergrate 536 princely state into India who was planning either to accede in Pakistan or to be Independent state. Please refer B.P. Menon Book who has drafted instrument of accession and reached on behalf of Government of India to Princes and Kings of 536 Princely states for signing instrument of accession for integrating their kingdoms/state into India.

The producers are clearly trying to capitalize on the success of "Westminster Abbey". Selling colonial nostalgia to British public which is already in a grip of populism and craving for stories about former glory. Even the role of viceroy is being played by the same actor who played Lord Grantham in Westminster Abbey.

Can we please stop this Myth that this is western propaganda, no one is trying to brainwash Brits into thinking the British Empire was awesome, it's a really laughable notion for any one that knows anything about British Media. The media in the UK is so left leaning, especially the BBC, which is the complete opposite of the things you are claiming to be. This is merely a film ''based'' on Historical events that is just used to entertain people not to educate, I'm sure it will be full of Drama. Films like Braveheart and The patriot do the same thing, they may not be completely historically accurate but they are entertaining. But there's nothing wrong with the Mountbattens fighting for India not being partitioned, it creates depth, I'm not a historical expert on this period so I don't know if it was true but it sure does add to the story.

Modulus 885 and Anjali Sharma, it's perfectly clear you don't have the slightest clue what you're talking about. You couldn't even get the name of the show right - it was Downton Abbey. Westminster Abbey is where Prince William married Kate Middleton in 2011. Either you somehow got the two mixed up, or you were thinking of Westminster Palace, where Parliament is located. jumbovs - As for it being propaganda - one of its producers is of Indian heritage, another is in fact Indian, and the last is an American of mixed Spanish and Japanese ancestry. I'm not really sure quite what their interest would be in selling British propaganda. This film is no doubt not particularly accurate. But I don't think it's at all intending to take away from the brutal reality of Empire. It's more just adding drama to try and make a more interesting story. It's not very accurate, but then most such films aren't.

The tune is distinct of Downton Abbey!! Reminds me of Indian summers. This is a movie. Not history. I sincerely hoped people didn't see this a true historical drama, the accuracy and content is near damning.
