This is definitely a candidate for tanks that should have entered service. A shame that a simple loader accident put an end to a promising vehicle. The driver's vision dead zone could be somewhat mitigated today with surveillance cameras. The hull aluminum endoskeleton structure is a difficult issue to resolve tho.
@armouredarchives88673 жыл бұрын
indeed, but you would need to rebuild the entire hull for that, which means to essentily start over, and with no market interest of gov funding thats a very costly soloution

I can sort of understand Bovington not taking one (they have more vehicles than they know what to do with)... But I'd have thought it would make the perfect study vehicle for Shrivenham on not getting carried away with features but forgetting the fundamentals.
@georgesabitbol21373 жыл бұрын
Awesome job, thanks Ed, Can you give us more details about the KE protection of the hull front and the CE protection of the turret front ? I've also a few points to make : - I think that the French 120 mm smoothbore gun proposed on the Valiant was the older G1 (AMX-40 and Osório ; export MBTs) and not the newer F1 (Leclerc). - Regarding the dead ground in front, by the end of the 1982 two additional periscopes (slightly looking downward) were added on each side of the original. - Concerning the viability of the aluminium hull concept : the FV4211 achieved 12 000 track miles on various test tracks, and it was found that the components life was marginally better than that of the Chieftain. There was enough confidence in the aluminium hull rigidity after six months of trials.

Great video. I worked for Vickers and was at Larkhill preparing to take Valiant to UAE on desert trials, we came back from lunch and found it upside down! major strip down at Bovington. Turret taken off and elevation gearbox repaired. the very wet soft ground helped, we still made it to the desert.
@petereveleigh24172 жыл бұрын
Rob, also a "significant first" was the complete integration of the weapon control electronics with the mechanics of the T & E gearboxes, turret ring etc from the drawing board forward. I was the Mil control systems GM at MRSL who developed (and named) the Centaur system. This, in its original form was our SFCS 600 fcs fully integrated with the freshly developed "solid state metadyne" (a 24v solution to the 56v problem in MBT80)- and also to the VS580 at the commander's station. I'm confident to say this level of integration WAS a world first - as a working demonstrator. Incidentally I had an NGL air conditioning system fitted to a Scorpion whilst running the Sales team @ ATDU - mid 70s!
@robbo33532 жыл бұрын
To add to my previous comment, Valiant may have been the first British tank to have air conditioning for the crew, powered by a small diesel engine.

I hope not, mutch better as a tech tree vehicle just before the vickers Mk7. if the soviets get 7 non-premium MBTs from 9.7+ (plus another 2 9.3, and then a premium 9.7) the brits can get get 2 more 9.7+ MBTs too (and perhaps some 9.3s too) edit: the jordanian falcon II turret family (Centurian, challenger mk1 and chieftain tanks with new turrets, partially designed by south africans) or the EE-T1 Osório tank can be the 9.7 premiums. after all the soviets 9.7 premium is a non-russian T-72.

@@armouredarchives8867 Tech Tree: 120mm + Thermals = 9.3 or 9.7. (Depending on engine power and mobility) Premium: 105mm + NVG = 8.7 or 9.0. Again, depending on the engine power. It could act as a well armored Leo 1, able to dish out damage, but withstand APDS and HEAT rounds.
@RedXlV3 жыл бұрын
@@matthiuskoenig3378 I was completely unaware that the Osorio used a British turret, which makes it a serious contender for a British premium. As for the Vickers MBT Mk 4 Valiant, the Mk 1 and Mk 7 are already in the tech tree. Obviously it would go between them. Along with the Vijayanta Mk 2 and the Vickers MBT Mk 3. Also, the South African Olifant series needs to be added to the British tree.
