I think those planes of old generations were more beautiful than now. They have a soul :)
@mhamma65606 жыл бұрын
787 and 747-8 are some of the best looking aircraft. When you get up close you notice subtleties that you don't see from distance, particular in how clean and sleek they are. When you walk around and under neath them, the attention to detail in aerodynamics and making a sleek bird comes into picture. They should replace the 4 of those engines with a pair of GE Nx engines from the 747-8, substantially increase performance while reducing fuel burn.

As a boy I flew many times between USA and UK on Boeing 707s and DC 8s. Then came my first flight on a BOAC Super VC 10. From the airport window it looked like Sci-fi, just BEAUTIFUL. Then we got in and it was so much nicer than what we were used to. Then we accelerated and took off and we were amazed. This was like going from a School Bus (707 and DC 8) to a Ferrari. VC 10s were the best airliners of the time, and are still my favourite.

They came as a regular, sometimes daily visitor from Brize Norton, equipped with fuel or supplies.. It made always an impressive appearance due landings and take offs.. You still could here the four Rolls Royce Conway engines roaring after five minutes they had took off... Always noisy with character..!! Great aircraft, unfortunately that era came to an end.. Together with the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar they have been replaced by Airbus A330-200 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker/Transport aircraft).. Also a great aircraft to see... Still operational flying from Brize Norton..

I worked at LAX (for JAL) from 1971 until 1980 and the VC-10 was, perhaps, my favorite plane. I would often take a company pickup (authorized within the A/P) and drive down the service road next to 24L (the normal departure runway for int'l flights at that time) and stand next to the truck to watch the VC-10's takeoff. The motors had a unique sound ~ they seemed to crackle rather than roar at takeoff thrust.

An unusual mod to these ageing aircraft, to reduce stress on the outer wings, is above 127 tons both ailerons deflect 3 degrees up (to reduce lift created by the outer wing section) and the flaps are slightly extended to compensate. This only seemed to occur during the climb, around the time we levelled out the wing reverted to the normal clean configuration - due to fuel burn reducing the all up weight. I witnessed this in 2004 - if anyone knows any more on this I'd be interested to hear it.
