Great double-act! Let's have more Vicki + Rebecca. Winchester is one of my favourite cities. I got married there, in the historic Pilgrims' Hall, in 1970 and my wife and I spent many happy hours and days in and around Winchester, when we were staying with her parents, both of whom are buried in Magdalen Hill Cemetery, which is on a hill overlooking Winchester.

Splendid video. It's a funny thing; I walked part of the South Downs Way out of Winchester in September and didn't notice reference on the signs to the Viaduct Way. It just goes to show that sometimes unless you're looking for something, you just don't see it.

I wandered through the ruins of Wolvesey Castle when I was in Winchester last June. It was great as there was NO ONE else there the entire time. I guess it is not a major attraction like the Cathedral, Great Hall, and school. One of the things to look for in the cathedral is the medieval floor tiles which still exist.

I've walked the accessible bits of the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway (DNS). Winchester Chesil (corruption of Cheesehill) station was where Chesil Street car park is now goo.gl/maps/zG2FVPBUtMysen6u6, in a cutting between the street and St Giles Hill. You can also walk on a section north of Chesil, near where the disused DNS/GWR line crossed the present Southern Railway line at Kings Worthy.

I was at school in Winchester in the 1960s (yes, I'm old!), and we used to say that King Alfred would drop his sword in shock if a virgin ever walked underneath him..... he hasn't dropped it yet! The Winchester Chesil railway had only recently closed, and we used to walk past the place where it went under the road in a big cutting; this may or may not have been the old station, but the premises were occupied by a laundry.

On the subject of King Alfred the Great, he was born in Wantage, and there's an abandoned railway there (the Wantage Tramway) and, of course, some abandoned railway stations to match including Wantage Railway Station, Grove Hill Halt, Oxford Lane Halt and the abandoned junction station on the mainline, Wantage Road station. To add to the excitement, it crosses and abandoned canal (the Wilts and Berks). A delightful old Pathe newsreel on the subject. www.wantage.com/the-wantage-tramway/ I'm not sure what's still left, but one to add to the the list...

Have happy memories of Winchester, including the cathedral with its grave of St Swithun - perhaps it rained because he knew he wouldn't be mentioned 🌈. The mill at 5:40 used to be the YHA hostel, and you could wash in the millrace (I think?).

My girlfriend's father treated me to a detailed history personal tour of Winchester Cathedral when I was 19. At one tomb he pointed out a stone bird that signified that life was fleeting. My son graduated there a couple of years ago. I'm now 67. Where has the time gone? Where has my girlfriend gone? Chilling.
