It's the piano in the back for me. Everything you mentioned is absolutely true and accurate but for my ear the quiet, fairly simple piano arrangement in the back is what elevates that part into something i have to finish listening to, even now over 20 years later and heard hundreds of times. It's this sort of sweet but melancholy, melodic, ethereal, just that little tiny extra bit that works so immensely well with the soaring harmonies.

There is a much deeper message that Rick is trying to share with us. And when he says, “I get chills”, he is deeply awe-struck by the synchronicity of life. Many of the artists who have worked with Rick, speak of his guru-like ability to tune into a song, an artist or moment - and intuitively know what is needed. “When you are open, and looking for these clues in the world, they’re happening all the time. And they’re happening often right when you need them.” Rick is plugged into the intelligent rhythm of the universe. That’s fucking powerful.

I remember meeting System of a Down in Baton Rouge in the late 90's. I was talking to their bass player Shavo Odadjian, asking why on Earth was he was playing a hollow body Linc Luthier bass on stage. He told me he really liked them, but I told him the sound and look were completely wrong for his music. I suggested he try a Gibson Thunderbird instead. He was lukewarm to the idea at the time but was cordial and said he'd consider it. Shavo is a very nice guy and we talked for a some time about the band, thier music, and bass playing in general. I even recall Serj Tankian looking over at us wondering what we were so intently chatting about. A few years passed and I was watching MTV when Chop Suey came on. Sure enough, I immediately recognized the band and noticed that Shavo had ditched his old bass for a Gibson Thunderbird!! I believe Gibson even sponsors him now. I would love to hear from him and find out if he remembered our conversation, but they are so huge it probably has no chance of happening. Anyway, even at the point when I met them, you could tell they had something special and were destined to make it big. Glad to see they did.

It’s Serj’s use of emotion and melody that drove this home to me since the moment I heard it at the tender age of 15. The “forsaken me” part always pulled at my heartstrings. @MrBearddog2 жыл бұрын
@@itsshaz4311 It's literally what Christ said on the cross right before he died. This was "randomly taken from a book". It's the moment that proves God allowed Christ to make his ultimate sacrifice without help so that Christ"s triumph could be his - much like a parent will allow a child to do something on their own to fully enjoy the sense of accomplishment. In His weakest moment, Christ couldn't see the reason behind God the Father's methods but still trusted in his plan "father, into thy hands I commend my spirit" was his final act of "faith" in and submission to a bigger purpose. He could have called on angels to deliver him but he gave his life so he could triumph over death in front of the whole world. His resurrection gives the hope necessary for our own triumph over what can seem like a hopeless moment(s) of suffering. It says that "no matter how bad this can get, it ends in triumph over this earthly realm; there is something beyond this that is greater". A bigger purpose that "if we trust in the all powerful love of a cosmic parent, we will be ok. We'll always be able to go back home - where love abounds." All that found it's way into the song "Chop Suey" by accident.
@MrBearddog2 жыл бұрын
@@realitywave He wasn't in "heavan" the whole time (according to the scriptures) but also in hell to bring spirits out of "endless" torment. Call it what you will but millions and millions of people find "salvation" in the philosophy of Christianity and hope it offers. I've found spiritual power in the deepness of the gospel (etymology: good news) and compared to all other theories or philosophies you can't say it's anymore of a fairytale then anything you believe in. Believe what you want but I find hope in an all powerful, all loving creator that sent us into earthly "simulation" to gain cosmic/spiritual power and who's only goal for us is to enjoy life as he does.

Song was originally called "Suicide". The way I see it is that the verses and chorus are the thoughts of the people left behind after someone commits suicide, that's why it's so frenzied. The rush of guilt and shock after a person you care about does it overwhelms you. The bridge, as is discussed in this video, are the thoughts and feelings of the person committing the act just before they do it, hence the calm and desperation of the delivery, and as it fades out, that's the end of the persons life, hoping that everyone just understands why they did it. That's what I think.
@boomerbob51152 жыл бұрын
Damn, haven’t heard this interpretation of it yet but this definitely works and I like it. I guess then you could say the ending of the song connects all that and related it back to jesus dying on the cross?
@Infamous1592 жыл бұрын
im amazed you knew it was originally named suicide. You're the only person in my entire life to know that besides me. They named it "chop suey" because they got backlash (from the inside) about it being named suicide which is a very harsh song name and they and others around them knew that it might not be the best to name a song suicide and promote that. So they chopped the name in half to "sui" and called it chop suey after the asian dish (which is just a laugh at the whole conundrum of what they went through to master this and what they are talking about in the song in the first place). SOAD will always be goated with their music. even 20 years later im still deciphering their meanings in their songs
