THE FEAR OF SPRINGS: This video is not intended to wash away the fear of springs. If not handled properly the springs on this motor could cause serious injury.. This video shows my procedure for spring removal and replacement and should be used for reference only. ATTEMPT SPRING REMOVAL AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Absolutely awesome video. I just watched all 6 videos and learned so much. I am glad that I fund these videos and can work on mine. Thank very much for taking your valuable time to make these videos. I know how much time and dedication it takes to make videos, editing them, and upload them since I have some experience with my channel. Thanks again, regards, JZ

Can't thank you enough for this series of videos, I just rebuilt my VV-90 (S/N: 67596) this weekend and it sounds great. Hope to come across another that I can refurbish in the future. What a great piece of functional history to own and enjoy.

Thanks for the video! Do you use regular kerosene or 1-K? Are there any concerns using kerosene with impurities?

Do you happen to know the size of the ball bearing that goes on top of the spindle… I’m rebuilding one just like yours but it didn’t have the ball bearing to begin with

Why not use brake parts cleaner in place of the kerosene or gasoline? It seems to me that the brake parts cleaner will be less dangerous to use and there is little concern for disposal afterwards. Do you burn the waste kerosene? Asking because I have the identical motor to rebuild to fix the "clunk" during play.

Yes, I've heard this can be treacherous! I would never try any kind of repair anyway! Do you know Rick Wilkins of Early Days Musical Museum who lives in Duncanville? I leave my machines wound down. For whatever reason, I never wind them all the way up, just enough for a play--33 turns with the Credenza, 21 on the 7-11, 8-9 and 2-15. The #10 feels tight at just about 11 and won't got past 17. I like to stop the crank at the 12 o'clock position, too. The Brunswick Panatrope will take 49!

i like this video very much it has been useful in helping me repair my 1917 June Victor. Mine has a double motor. I'm also wanting to know the direction of the springs top and bottom since I've lost track in my cleaning as to which direction they go back in...Can anyone help? I know they go opposite in each motor... thanks in advance.

@VictrolaJazz My edison diamond disc william and mary console takes 120 turns to fully wind the motor! I have repacked the springs though. Plays very nice and smooth through three whole records front and back.

Do you just let the parts dry after cleaning or rinse them off and then dry them?

Doesn't matter where you work, even on concrete, small parts always some how get into the smallest places and disappear if dropped. I use a top white sheet from a king size bed ( not the fitted kind). I put that down first.

I have a couple Victrolas and a few Edison standards that have spring issues, your videos were very helpful in helping me overcome my fear of spring dismantling.

Kerosene or gasoline is not good for cleaning. They will not recommend this one. Instead of kerosene, you can use WD-40 to clean them up to prevent dirt from old grease.

What does it mean if the motor seems to slow to a stop when trying to play a record? It is wound up and as soon as you place the needle on the record it slows to a stop.

They are both great for cleaning. Kerosene is probably the most popular solvent used in parts-washers. Also if you watch the first video, he did spray everything down with WD-40 to free everything up befor dismantling. This guy obviously knows what he's doing.

Thanks to this, I was able to open and examine spring barrel of Pathe Nr.00: chunk of spring is boken, think of getting away with a shorter, yet better greased spring. Maybe will look for replacement too.

I have just finished one of these. I am in the UK so it is a model 32 motor but the same thing. I put the two springs in a bucket with a lid on & soaked them in petrol (Gasoline.) for a couple of days. It made removing the old grease a bit easier, although one had to take into consideration the safety aspect. I have a portable work bench (Called a Workmate in the UK.) which I clamped the barrel into as it has wooden jaws & walked around it feeding the spring in at the same time.Cheers. Chris
