Played guitar and keys for years. Then I saw this guy. Got myself a cheap bass ($70) and fell in love. After watching a few YT's of Mr. Wooten, my passion grew. I should put in more time on the bass, I procrastinate. Will I ever play like Mr.Wooten? HaHaha!

Some of this reminds me of flamenco playing, the percussive strums and deadened strings at just the right time. When a player gets to this level, song structure is almost incidental... just gives us enough to recognize the melody, then takes it wherever he wants, and we're just along for the ride. The cool thing is he's seeing some things for the first time just like we are... Gorgeous playing. And for the guy comparing Victor to Berthoud and some of the other imitators, forget it.. if you can't see the difference it's ok don't even worry about it.

The lesson I take away that Sir Wooten is sharing is that you can absolutely change tempos and drag or speed up as much as you want as long as your story is driven by intention. He is completely playing these many different parts as an explorer that has already climbed a 1000 mountains. But at the same time he doesn't take the mountain for granted. He always seems to enjoy the journey as a spectator as well as the creator. That was a really special musical moment to witness. Thank you so much for sharing this!!

@XX-qi5eu2 жыл бұрын

@mymodel62 жыл бұрын
Als is better because it's a melody played on an instrument designed for melodic playing. Victors version, like all of his 'versions', are melodies played on on a rhythym instrument, which are a huge technical achievement but less emotionally impactful because of the constraints the instrumant itself imposes. Still fantastic to listen to, but how good do you think a Stevie Ray Vaughan solo would sound played on a xylophone? It's best not to over egg these things and just be realistic...

The takeaway here is that as long as you play a zillion notes that don't mean anything you can fool the majority of listeners. Kind of like a cat walking across a piano.
@drpando2 жыл бұрын
Is it me, or does anyone else think his playing is sloppy (becoming more so as the years go on) ? Noisy buzzed notes, some missed notes altogther. I mean if you listen to Patitucci or Berthoud or Caron, they are absolutely clean, precise, and just as musical and innovative. Just because Victor was one of the earliest performers of this style doesn't make him the best at it. Listen to Heinrich Linder. Victor has lost his edge. I went to one of his concerts awhile back before 2020, and it was a big disappointment - 2 hour long jam session. No recognizable playing from the earlier years. I think he's got a great attitude and personality though.
@pedrocarvalho66092 жыл бұрын
i don't think he has ever been the cleanest around, but his musicality is something extremely impressive to do on something as technical as this... but yes, i agree...
@MartinMaat2 жыл бұрын
I haven't followed him through the years but I do follow Berthoud, noticed the influence and was thinking the same. This is live though and still most engaging and musical. As a pioneer he's entitled to a bit of sloppiness. I guess it is the fate of most inspiring trail blazers: they get an army of followers/admirers, some of which are bound to overtake them in their own game. We do not get to hear the 99.9% imitators who never got close.

The thing is that Berthoud is completely missing the soul of music IMO. His playing is so clean and technical, but let me ask, what is his message? What is the feeling? Or the narrative? In my opinion his music is more spectacle. Music isn't about getting "right" notes, it's not about playing the exact same sheet music perfectly every time. And ironically, I believe that IS the "lesson" Victor teaches us through this song. The missed notes, the different versions. That's the entire point!

What a crowd. Hear shit off key and accidentally played and they go crazy. Victor was right when talking to "Music is Win "people just want to hear something different. Even if it wasn't purposeful. Just give them something different." Great jam nonetheless. Pretty sure Victor could just punch the floor nearby a bass and make beautiful music come out.
@mymodel62 жыл бұрын
That's just bullshit though, if Victor fluffs a note, then that's not the story he intended to tell, he would play the right note if he could turn the clock back. The audience clapping in appreciation of a duff note is just cringey wank...
