As someone who has ADD, I really found comfort in this interview. I've been in undergrad school for 7 years now (5-yr degree program) because it really us difficult as the system is catered for neurotypicals. Although my professors have been understanding and lenient, I think most of them still lack the proper tools to accommodate students who are different (non-neurotypicals).
@yllodenajallidros4 жыл бұрын
Hi I'm a teacher in High School (I'm still relatively new to this gig). In your opinion, what ways could I help my students who have ADHD/ADD?
@samantharadaza30154 жыл бұрын
@@yllodenajallidros Hello! I've only been diagnosed with the inattentive type of ADHD (formerly known as ADD) last year and I am currently at university so I would like to say up front that there is a difference in the dynamics of university life vs high school life. Second, I am not an expert and I will largely base my answer on my personal experiences and the conversations I’ve had with my therapist. 1. There are three types of ADHD: hyperactive, inattentive, and combination. Understanding those three (how they differ from one another, their manifestation, etc.) will greatly help you in making the necessary adjustments to cater to students who have them. 2. For those with the hyperactive type, generally they can’t stay still for a long time and they have to have an outlet for their energy. I’ve read a story about this woman who was a law student and has the hyperactive type. When she feels the need to, she would go out of the classroom and run around the oval at their university. She’d come back refreshed and more focused after her run. So maybe if you notice this kind of behavior in your students, don’t immediately get angry or offended. Maybe you can ask them first and then basically let them be because it’s their coping mechanism. 3. For those with the inattentive type like me, our problem is distractibility and lack of focus. What I personally do is I sit at the front row to minimize distractions. So as the teacher, maybe you could facilitate with the seating arrangement of the class? Although, I’m not sure if sitting at the front row is everyone’s cup of tea but that’s what I used to cope with my difficulty in focusing. 4. Communicate with your students, reach out to them. Ask them how they’re doing, if they are having difficulties, and have them identify what those difficulties are. One thing I learned is that communication is key to avoid misunderstanding and premature judgment. Some general pointers that might help (I got some of these from Google): • Set deadlines for activities BUT be lenient For example, for long-term projects, you can divide them into segments so that the students will be able to have workable and shorter goals. What I meant with the lenient part is that late submissions should still be credited (and not have a 0 grade). Maybe just deduct points. A professor once told me that the important part is that the student made the effort to submit which is why he does not believe in giving 0s as grades. • Give frequent short quizzed than long tests. • Try different teaching techniques as opposed to a singular teaching style through the school year. I believe that would help in setting a more engaging learning atmosphere. There are lots of resources online that could help you. Talking to people (those with a background in psychology, those who actually have ADHD, teachers who've had experiences in handling students with ADHD) is also a great option that will give you more perspective on the matter. I think, in general, being understanding is the most important thing in handling students who have ADHD. My view is very limited of course, and I know that different people have different coping mechanisms, and different mannerisms as well. So I guess it all boils down to being observant, being understanding, and being patient with them. 😊

That diagnosis is a two edged sword for me looking at your generation. Because I'm about 20 years older and remember well when doctors and therapists suddenly would start to explain certain behavioural patterns with ADD or ADHD, or however you want to label it. And it was hard to discern whether that was due to a more refined form of diagnosis and being able to understand what goes on in the brain better, or because at that time what used to be normal child behaviour suddenly became unfashionable and children were expected to function instead of living in their own world. And if they didn't the explanation suddenly became: "This child has ADHD". So I'm a little weary when someone of your or Victoria's age says: "I have ADD", because it is very hard to know whether that is actually the case or if they were misdiagnosed when they were younger. Sometimes I feel like 50% of the people I met who had that diagnosis, never actually had any other problem than overburdened parents and teachers.

Victoria is immensely brave for sharing this, the fact that she is able to give such emotionally poignant performances whilst having ADD is inspirational, to say the least, Learning a script, learning your lines and your cast members lines for Ques as if its second nature too you, pulling from Meisner & Method acting techniques whilst having ADD... Just when I thought that I couldn't love victoria anymore than I already do, she openly tells us she has ADD, I've worked and acted at an inclusive Physical theatre company for 5 years ( Chickenshed theatre ) that endorses people of all physical and mental abilities, I've worked with and seen actors with down syndrome, autism, Cerebral palsy, yes, Cerebal palsy bring breathtaking performances to the stage, nothing is impossible and nobody should be told otherwise, no matter your condition, or disability, people with conditions or disabilities know exactly what they are up against every day and 9 times out of 10 they are the hardest working people in the room because they don't want to be another statistic or number, they are unique to prove a point, victoria Pedretti is proof of that! , producers, agents need to represent more inclusion actors because there are beautiful stories to be told.

For being a private person, she talked about a very personal thing that, given her reaction, touched her deeply and continues to do so. Courage and lovely girl our Victoria, I would like to hug her and tell her that so-called ADD is not a disease at all. It just has a different lock, which for their convenience and inadequacy they call mental desease, all they need is another key that they do not know or do not want to find, to make a person feel sick when they are not, I think it is one of the worst wrongs they can do you. Many people who have been very successful in life had ADD, Einstein just to name and the list is endless.

Im sorry I know you meant well, but it is a desease, there is a lack of some neurotrasmites and it afects your life in so may ways, I have add and hering poeple say that it is not a mental deseases gives the wrong idea that the strugle isnt real. When someone with add gets a diagnosis it helps a lot, it help them to stop blaming themselves for failing so much. However I understand why you say it, mental illnesses have a huge social stigma that must change.

I'm sorry, I certainly expressed myself badly, English is not my first language. It was not my intention to deny its existence. @@cristinadiaz5492 AD(H)D is no longer considered a disease but a neurological disorder which is a very different thing. It doesn't mean that it isn't difficult or a struggle just as a mental illness is, but the fact of the matter is that neurological disorders and mental illnesses are not the same. It is however very common to become mentally ill when you have these diagnoses. I for example have a mental illness called dysthymia which my neurologist believe was caused by my ADHD, or rather by the lack of treatment for my ADHD.

For me getting my ADHD diagnosis was a huge relief, but it happened when I was 24. By then, I had all these ways I could notice I was struggling so much in relation to other people, but no reason for it, so my brain defaulted to "I'm just lazy" and that was very damaging to me all my life. Getting the diagnosis, having a scientific, phisiological reason behind it made me go from "I'm a bad person" to "I'm built slightly differently, and I gotta take that into account". But I can totally understand how it can be limiting and labelling for others, in different situations. I think Victoria's point of view is incredibly valid, but let's not forget that not everyone will feel the same about things. Though I get that's not what she was trying to say, I'm just sharing my personal experience for contrast, too.

What an amazing, well educated & well spoken young woman she is 🥰 We don't see that often, you know. I love her more & more each day. She is so precious, pure & genuine. And really good at her job. I KNOW that she's DEFINITELY gonna have an amazing career. I can't wait to see what she is gonna do next.

I did'n expect that she would speak so sincerely, honestly, but at the same time self-critical and reasonable.I would like to thank her for sharing her thoughts and telling about her personal experience (I also learned something new about add). Off topic, but it's cool that we have a birthday almost on the same day :)
