Author Victoria Tennant joins Wendy Whelan, a dancer in New York City Ballet for more than 30 years, to discuss her new book Irina Baronova and the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo.
This illustrated history tells the tale of the rise of modern ballet and its popularity through the life story of one of ballet’s most glamorous stars, Irina Baronova. Baronova, Tennant’s mother, was chosen by the great George Ballanchine at the age of thirteen to join the Ballets Russes, where she danced the lead in Swan Lake.

Nina Stroganova was the third of the founding Prima Ballerinas of Ballet Theater, and helped created one of the roles in Pas de Quatre, as Lucile Grahn. Nora Kaye and Annabelle Lyon only appeared in it in later casts.

She is wonderful and modern and authentic. Refreshing lack of pretension.

When you are talking to Victoria it's hard for you to be as intelligent as her. The more I know about Victoria Tennant the more I love her. Such a great talent and so smart. Just a classy lady and still a great beauty at 71. Rips my heart out whenever I see her act Such as The Winds of War, Winds of Remembrance.

I think in the documentary about her, she comes across as very genuine and a person who has dedicated her life to the vocation of dance. She needn't be gregarious. After all, dancers don't speak at all onstage. Remember. Not when they're performing.
