I have not seen this documentary since it came out in the 80s. We were so young then. It's January 2022, 35 years after the "Year of the Hawaiian." I would love to see a retrospective follow up on the lives of those interviewed and their views of Hawaii and the state of Native Hawaiians in today's world.

I go to Hawaii to learn about the history, the land, the culture, the traditions, to hear story, and s l o w l y learning their beautiful language. To me, THAT is where the beauty of the islands comes from.

28:55 This is so so sad, poor guy! So even though he speaks the language (which can't be even said about some "true" Hawaiians), lives on the island, spreads the culture and most importantly the love for the culture, just because he was born with a slightly lighter skin tone makes him 2nd category? Has this world gone completely crazy?? I'm really hesitating to write this because im in love with Hawai'i but maybe if their attitude towards people like Raymond is like that maybe they shouldn't wonder their culture is being, let's say, overlooked. But Ray also said he surrounds himself with people that dont care about that and love him for who he is - I just hope that there are more people like them and less like the racists. Love and peace to everybody reading.

Aloha, and thank you for exposing your heart [missing in these times] It's truly a small percentage. Aloha doesn't permit such action, and it allows Hawaiians like me to help adjust those that need fine tuning! Much Aloha! [My heart hurt too]

I've always felt being "Hawaiian" had nothing to do with ethnicity. I've known a lot of "blood" quantum "Hawaiians" who really don't have the heart or aloha of the Hawaiian people. Then I also know some Caucasians who have no Hawaiian blood who have the soul of a Hawaiian. They have aloha for all, are selfless, giving and just full of aloha.

My tutu, who is Hawaiian, use to say, being a Hawaiian is an action, not just koko. My uncle became sterile after chemo and couldn't have kids, so he adopted a baby. The baby had no koko Hawaii but was raised Hawaiian. She is spiritually as Hawaiian as can be

Let Hawaiians decide who and what is Hawaiian. Can they at least have that?America is the only place as far as I know where you can come from somewhere else and become an American.Let Hawaiians Decide Aloha

That's a damaged mindset and really does no good for actual kanaka, because the so called hawaiians with no blood you talk about didn't go through the hard times nor did they experience firsthand the effects of colonization. So of course your heart doesn't feel deep pain like we do.

I am part Hawaiian myself, but it is not about the created, it is about the Creator! Remember, all these fine words, without God who created all things, and Jesus who gave us life, we are nothing without putting Jesus first! Many are searching in a dark room, and end up loving the walls. This Pele and loving the land will vanish like it always did in the past. Remember Hawaiians, sold out Hawaiians. This is how it all began. Turn away from the Creator, to the created, you loose your blessings as did the Hebrews. Jesus really loves the Hawaiian people. Blessing to them all! “Love the Lord your God w/all your heart and soul and mind. This is the first and most important commandment”. Matthew 22:37-39.

Jesus is the myth that the 1 percenters use to keep the 99% in check. Promises that your life will be glorious after death while you live in utter destitution under the rulership of the rich. Don't' fight against your oppressors, when he hits your right cheek turn and let him hit your left. When he ask for your money pay your taxes. All BS. The Hawaiians know the life comes from the land, and not some imaginary Jew that supposedly existed over 2000 years ago.

Hawaiians were treated unfairly. Kids of Hawaiian descent were in the lowest class. They didn’t all look Hawaiian. Me n my friends were mixed race, Hawaiian, Portuguese, English, Irish, German,French, Chinese. Come party time, me n my friends passing food to the kids in the low class. Why do people segregate races? Arrogance, ignorance, etc.

Just got to know Jesus as Kanaka, interpret as Kanaka. Jesus was not haoli! No Roman false authority prototype. Jesus is Aloha ‘Āina. The wolf in sheep’s clothing is Catholic Vatican racist core that all branches of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are radically biased by their colonial enemies blasphemous orders. Very few actually have a native foundation to interpret correctly.

Conscious Living -Everyone in this video is Hawaiian. Some are fair, some are dark. But all are Hawaiian and are sharing their Hawaiian identity with respect and aloha. I think you may have misunderstood the premise of the film, and the mana’o of the speakers. There is no place for anger or aggression on this response page. Respecting the culture applies to all, even viewers and respondents. Mahalo!

Conscious Living they banned our language that is why it was not used in his house hold. And he is a Kanaka Maoli. The college was teaching it and he went and learned it, even though what they taught before wasn’t the true language, but taught from the Bible we translated in to Hawaiian. Which most of those words had to be made up because Hawaiians didn’t have words for all of the words in the Bible. He is Hawaiian we have Ehu (red headed Hawaiians). And Hawaiians believe in mental health. I heard that evil spirits make you angry, so handle that girl.
