The pliers are the reason I picked a Deluxe Tinker over other models. I use them all the time.

I agree with your assessment. And I appreciate the history. I have some SWKs but none have pliers. I just ordered a deluxe tinker I think I will like it for edc.thanks for the video...

I’ve been using a wood Huntsman as my EDC for the past 9 months. I mainly use the large blade, scissors and cap lifter. I’ve used the awl for removing small stones stuck in the tread of my boots. Curiously, the saw blade came in handy for cutting open small crusty rolls in our hotel room each day whilst we were on holiday! The only short coming I’ve found is that there are times when I’ve wished it had a proper Philips screwdriver for replacing batteries in the kids toys. I received my Deluxe ST Damast LE today. It is a beautiful knife, very similar in size to the Huntsman. Some might argue that is a collectors item and too good to use, however I plan to use it as my EDC and enjoy it for a while to see if it can take the place of my Huntsman. Thanks for the video, it was useful to hear your thoughts on the two knives side by side.

The corkscrew is awesome for untying hard knots. I use it all the time backpacking. Also, a lot more people in the States drink wine now. And lots always have in Europe.

Yeah I’d rather have the corkscrew than the Phillips too. But I still feel SAK needs to switch and modernize a little. Don’t get rid of it just offer other models with new tools. Long live the corkscrew 😂

I love the pliers, but I really don’t like the perpendicular phillips head… I think I’d prefer the Cybertool M with the whole driver head suite, but it does start to get rather bulky. I’d like one with the standard in-line phillips/LED light with pliers, and maybe even the package opener from the new Companions 🤙

If I wanted to replace the scissor spring or the pliers spring, would I need the medium or large spring for the Victorinox Deluxe? Thanks in advance!
@BernardoBerndsen

You’d need the medium for that. Check etsy or eBay for some good deals.

EDC criteria: SAK and/or multitool carried on jeans pockets only. No holster or any other external bag. After trying several times to EDC the Huntsman, keep coming back to my trustee Camper w/suspension clip and corkscrew firefly on right front pocket. I added a G. Dime in the small front pocket adding the light duty pliers and scissors. Though on replacing the Camper with SAK Climber (loose the saw) or SAK Compact (get the pen but combo tool too fiddly). Although is rarely used you can not beat the saw capability. Next improvement: Adding plus scales to the Camper. PS: I consider the 3D Phillips overrated as per its location on the tool and the rare scenario of recessed screws.

Right on! I agree with your thoughts; for me the climber with plus scale is hard to beat and personal I think is a better setup than the compact. Thanks for your comment! 🍻

I'm budget minded, so for those I just get them off ebay. They have pricy titanium ones but these cheap ones have never let me down. Just be sure to but from a highly rated seller - www.ebay.com/itm/363869302455?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D249159%26meid%3D852e1070725d4c13b4b2e30c85e3298a%26pid%3D101195%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D266241637716%26itm%3D363869302455%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplAMLv11WebTrimmedV3MskuWithLambda85KnnRecallV1V4V6ItemNrtInQueryAndCassiniVisualRankerAndBertRecall%26brand%3DUnbranded%2FGeneric&_trksid=p2047675.c101195.m1851&amdata=cksum%3A363869302455852e1070725d4c13b4b2e30c85e3298a%7Cenc%3AAQAIAAABcA2rugFlOq3qu1cLac%252F%252Fk6Vp0Oa0HaJIqoXKeIiOR%252BTUgsSvHaeyPxKYu6UqHqq7GaGyKVqHQnjeiiXcQpMGw2t3aB%252BssGfjtIWOBj8wExc7oYYP7xGMyQCrHDyDaSaWjB1CueI3A94n0yxXX5dx5gCqsHO86OIomHVD1DYu%252BBrQ0VadZclKCnEKc1iy%252F2Daw%252BMC5zh1gc%252FoZvVt6kfJ6VFQoIfJf8nNweGvo9oAjpSWB5eOe0Em09hG%252FAJ6MHREq0wPGCTHnX8ySWwfCRndpEHeusKm%252B9vuMw6E1RvhsqdCD5nUqFqxZr8OwIXwfYsqaqdI2OSojet1WZPNzrF3UAwDvVH66gHyTwMcNP6lEVmDr2W0n16VtLp105Gwbja%252FdJUplxVJ%252FSKvMUzRYfMJ9hc0056vxIyMsf%252BDfdrTl5DLA2mvesT1Y3GlruEs9%252BuWpAICCbd0o2vSo1Jur%252FoKYUoHvX3UHAQXJ%252F%252FduvtW9iMG%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Cclp%3A2047675

Didn't a lot of boys get their first pocket knives when they joined the Boy Scouts and the Swiss Army Knife was the one that the Boy Scouts either gave as a reward, ( maybe for reaching a certain level, or having a certain number of patches). But I believe that was one of their biggest boosts for U.S. sales and popularity. But I also heard it was because of exposure to them in WW II . Any thoughts?
@BernardoBerndsen
@BernardoBerndsen Жыл бұрын
I never made it to Boy Scouts but I think that would be a really cool idea as a reward or gaining a certain level. The huntsman would be my choice of gift for scout hands down! And yes it's popularity gained in the US from the soldier bring them back from the war. They were popular all over Europe especially in Germany and France from my understanding and Switzerland of course. It's the quality that stands out, Victorinox didn't invent the multi tool knife, they just kind of perfected at the time, their Victorinox Stainless Steel was unique to them at the time as well and they were built to a high quality. I bet many of those that came back from the War became Scout leaders or had children and inevitability wanted to pass down something familiar and trustworthy. If I'm not mistaken I think Victorinox even does some collaborations with Boy Scouts and produce some knives with their logos and such.

In the absence of a Corkscrew, use the Phillips to push the cork downwards into the bottle, then pour the wine past the cork.

I think you got your wars mixed up, WWII, 1940’s was when swiss army knives were discovered by USGI’s
@BernardoBerndsen
@BernardoBerndsen 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct I had misspoke on that point but I had meant to say WWII. I mention 40's to 50's because the war ended in 45 and I believe the true fame came when the GI's were back and the years right after. Thanks for watching and the correction. Cheers!

@@BernardoBerndsen You are right. G.I.s saw German Soldier with Armee Suisse (branded on blade) Knives but they could not pronounce what the Germans were calling them, German word for Officer's Knife (Offiziersmesser), so they called them Swiss Army Knives. And of course, those soldiers would not have spread the news until they got back after the war.

That’s too bad, I can attest that it’s worked for me on a 10mm battery nut. It’s more for emergency, my shop teacher would have killed me using pliers on nuts. 😂

I am totally confused why they call it the Tinker. I see nothing about it that makes it a Tinker. Where are the fine screwdrivers to work on eyeglasses, open backs of watches and laptops, a pin to reset electronic devices, flash light, bit driver with bits, magnifying glass, and it doesn't even have a corkscrew to open a bottle of wine. When I think of the word Tinker, I think of tools that allow you to work on gadgets and fix things. And I disagree with you on it being the most modern Victorinox. There are ones with flashlight, eyeglass screwdriver via corkscrew, bit driver with bits, and a pin that deserves that title more. I got the huntsman for my gf because it has a wine corkscrew for those times we go to wineries and I like the idea of having a saw because I am into survival gears. But I think the Huntsman sorta falls short as well. A knife called a Huntsman should have a fish de-hooker and scale remover, a ferro rod instead of a toothpick, magnifying glass, pliers for pulling hide on small game, and a tool that allows you to work on hunting rifles and bows. Just my opinion. I have the Leatherman Signal, Key chain NexTool, Gerber Shortcut, and a Victorinox Trekker (that I can't find). I got the Huntsman for my GF for Valentines day. Good video even though I disagree with you on a few things. Thumbs up.

I agree, the names can be kind of comical but I can see where it might be hard to give tools meaningful names. The huntsman is an excellent choice. I love mine and it's in my rotation very frequently and I think it's there best sell tool and for good reason. BTW there are 3rd party opinions for ferro rods and such if you are every looking to get into mods and things. Cheers!

I went on an expensive rabbit hole trying to figure out the best multi tool for EDC and at work and my conclusion was I need a good set of pliers with good cutters, a bit kit, scissors, bottle opener, tweezers, ruler, file, screw drivers and a knife blade. I settled on carrying a Leatherman Rebar and a Victorinox Compact. There are things I love and things I hate from both companies and I kind of hate carrying both every day but I often find myself using both tools throughout my day.. Leatherman - Better pliers, you can get more torque on most of their tools. Bit kits available for bit change out systems or extension adapters. They have a much better phillips head driver and their tools provide far more clearance and options in space. Victorinox - Better scissors hands down, leatherman scissors even the Micra which is a scissors based tool is absolute garbage. I prefer their tweezers and awl to use to remove splinters and I view the Victorinox Swiss Army knife as the ultimate first aid kit tool and body groomer (scissors, tweezers, really sharp thin blades) and the Compact also gives me a useable ink pen and standard needle pin. I also prefer the knife blade shape on the Victorinox tools over leatherman.

I hear ya, there is no perfect tool lol. But you have picked some good ones! Don't forget you can purchase the compact or "Plus" scales and add them to pretty much all models. - Cheers 👍👍

I think that's a great combination, best of both worlds. I'm in the UK so I can't EDC my Rebar (locking blade) and for us really there isn't a ''one and done'' multitool from a reputable manufacturer, except for the Swisschamp. One good combo in my rotation is Leatherman Bond plus the Farmer X, providing the scissors and saw missing on the Bond.
