Here in Vietnam, the Roxon KS2E( with upgraded D2 steel blade) cost ~17USD, the Fieldmaster cost ~37USD. There is just no comparison with that price difference. And even more, the Roxon included a 4mm bit drivers set, something Victorinox keep in their more expensive Cybertool lines. I have not used many multitools but the KS2E clip feels quite sturdy, compared to Victornox SAKs which don't even have that? The availability and qualities might be enough to tip the scale to Victorinox's favor in the UK, here, the closest competitor in that price range is either Sportman or Spartan.

Admittedly not neutral (although. Swiss…) , Victorinox refused to use fancy delicate steel over a refined set of different steel types for blades and tools. These selected steels holding up well, are flexible enough not to break - and also not breaking my bank.

Victorinox is such good value. The only multitool slot I don’t have a Vic in is the heavy duty slot which goes to the Leatherman Surge. At every other weight / size level the Vic is just hard to beat.

I bought my first Victorinox Swiss Army knife nearly 36 years ago. I carried that knife up until about 3 years ago when somebody just dropped it in their pocket and walked away. I remember paying well over $80 for that knife. Sad to say, I've never found another Swiss army knife that I thought was the same quality I had. That knife took a beating over the years and still looked as good as it did when I bought it.

Heard good things about Ruike multitools, but honestly, I have tried to beat the compact for a logn time. I spent years trying to find something "better" than my compact, but I have given up. I truly think it is the perfect EDC tool for the majority of people. Every alternative gives something up, and it's usually the eyeglasses driver (which is a must for me). Love this channel! The compact does not have the Vic's awl (which has a cutting edge). This means you can't cut ''dirty things'' with any tool in the back of the knife. So it's difficult to keep the main blade clean enough to eat, and that's a problem to me.

Thanks for including the endangered Swiza pocket-knife brand. The standard model, let alone the others, is impossible to buy, depending on your location. I suspect poor marketing and negative reviews since 2017, perhaps from Vic fans, killed Swiza's sales. It's a shame because Swiza, with its modern and ergonomic take, could have been a great Swiss EDC competitor with a design update or two. Sure, it's outpriced by Victorinox, but that's okay for Swiss-made goods without Victorinox's economies of scale and existing network (and goodwill). Jon, I love your balanced takes and analysis, especially from your long experience as an enthusiast, and very few KZbinrs like you actually worked in the EDC business with a leading brand. Could you check if Swiza plans to update its product line or expand its availability? P.S. Thanks for showing the Fox Vulpis. I didn't know about it.

I guess that shows Swiza's marketing and distribution need some work. It would be sweet to get our hands on their one-handed versions. By the way, their knives are dishwasher-safe (it works!) and their scales are designed to be snapped off and on (that works too! Swapped out the red ones with blue ones). Thanks for pointing out that they Swiza does have a keyring loop in some models. I didn't know that. And I agree that their site is a nightmare to navigate. I recently found a lovely Victorinox an ex left at my place twenty years ago and I absolutely love it! It’s a big old thing but with all the mods that are available now I’m kitting it out with new scales with pocket clip and spaces for flint, tweezers and tooth pick or whatever I choose. I have a Leatherman Crunch, Skeletool and Micra but all together they’re not as useful as the Vic in the pocket, the only really useful thing missing is the mod I did on the Skeletool for a hammer. I’ve had a few Vic’s in my youth and overlooked all of them as they seemed pretty ubiquitous in the UK compared to Leatherman’s but with age and experience Vic’s truly are solid EDC’s now.

I also got one and it didn’t replace my Super Tinker. The blade on the MKM is better and the scissors are actually pretty good. But they are some serious downsides. If I tighten the screws, I can’t open the bottle opener without destroying my fingernails and if I loosen them, there is blade play. The scissors are a bit hard to open, the fork and can opener are pretty much useless for me and the whole tool smells awful. It’s hard to compete with Victorinox and a better blade steel is just not enough for me.

My EDC Victorinox Trekker - which has been carried so much for so long that the shield and cross logo is nearly worn off - has liner locks for the blade and one or two other tools. Other Victorinox models have liner locks, too. My Trekker is the old model - the blade is not one-hand opening (wouldn't mind if it were) and is not serrated (wouldn't own it if it were). The new model Trekker, to my knowledge, is only available with a fully serrated main blade. Blech. I have been eyeing a couple of the Ranger Grip models, lately and I believe they also have liner locks. All of those, including my Trekker, are in the longest size of Victorinox pocket knives. That is another reason I like them as it makes the blade and, even more so, the saw longer and more useful but if the longer size isn't for you then I am personally not aware of any of the shorter models with liner locks.

Nothing really beats it in terms of weight to performance to durability/hardiness to usefulness. Of course this is highly dependent on 'which' Victorinox tool you use. But overall it's lightweight, compact, durable and the tools are useful. My only complaint is that they aren't customizable but it makes sense because of the rivets in it. I just want an Alox Bantam with scissors, nothing more, nothing less :D. But until then a Victorinox Rambler will do :P

I love the victorinox multitools, and I have one for every pair of pants and jackets :P BUT there's a big drawback, and that is one handed opening. I do own a Ranger that offers that functionality, but that tool is not for edc in my line of work. I have seen people do mods to make the knives open one handed, but I really think that is something victorinox should offer by now.

I just received a Swiss Eagle multitool with a compass. This was an accident because I thought it was a Victorinox, thanks to the Amazon presentation. 30 tools for under $30. But to say the least, it did not have the smooth feel of a SAK 🙄 nor was it easy to open the tools. It hurt my fingers to pry them out. Thus, I'm returning it. 😟

I was hoping to see a comparison of the MKM Malga or Campo line. I do appreciate seeing the Vulpis comparison. I have been thinking about getting the Campo 8, but I am hoping it comes out in Magnacut, with the same toolset. I don't think anything will replace my Victorinox and Leatherman, for being my go to favorites, but a little diversity won't hurt. $150 is a little high, especially when the similar toolset of the Victorinox is a 3rd of the price. I love how Victorinox steel doesn't have bad corrosion issues, at least not as bad.

I’d like a relatively thin multitool knife that incorporates an inline Phillips screwdriver. I don’t know why it can’t be made. The only ones that have it are like 5 layers thick. Way too thick!

Yes I know, this video is not the newest one but I've discovered your KZbin channel only recently so I comment only now. I really like your videos since I can find some ideas for my stuff and it also helps me practice my english. 😄 So thank you for this video, thanks to it I've finaly found the perfect edc multitool that fits MY needs : the Roxon KS2 Elite. In France (yes I'm a f*****g french, sorry) the law is very simple : you cannot carry any kind of blade in public places. That being said, the application of the law varies according to four factors : - is the blade easily reachable ? - is the blade fixed or easily openable ? - does the blade look aggressive ? - how nice is the policeman ? So why the Roxon KS2 Elite ? because I carry it inside its own pouch, inside a zipped pocket inside my backpack. Hence not easily reachable. Is it easily openable ? Yes, but only once you've managed to reach it. Does it look aggressive ? Certainly not, it looks more like a tool than a knife. Is the policeman nice ? Usualy he is but I have no control here. I also LOVE the fact that all the tools are lockable. Yes I'm that kind of guy who can close his blade on his fingers while working with it. Besides the Elite version offers two upgrades compared to the basic one you show in the video. The blade is made in D2 instead of 5cr15mov and there is an adapter for 4mm screw bits. Few screw bits are included too. As for the price I got it for 36 euros (without shipping fees) which means something about 30 pounds in UK or 39 US dollars at the time I write these lines. Once again thank you and keep it this way.

Great video and great selection, other knives that may be interesting to some are the Mercury Six use, or MKM equivalent for the fancy versions, both are brands from Maniago Italy, also good are the Boker Tech Tools. This is just a few in the modern swiss style multifunction knives, there's a whole other world of traditional style multifunction knives in the style of old scout knives. They are both my favourite types of knives in my collection. But yeah, in the end Victorinox always takes the crown, even if I carry one of the other knives I can't leave without my Victorinox Swisschamp, usually I have it and my Minichamp too for every day carry.

Another plus for the victorinox is the range of aftermarket scales you can get for them as well as different coloured tweezers, toothpicks etc. They really can be customised to look different.

I'd say go for the Vulpis in M390 if you use the blade a lot & want something that can go longer between sharpenings, and their existing tool selection isn't an issue. Big steel upgrade.

Thanks for the informative video Jon. It is hard to beat Victorinox on quality and pricing though there is always room for improvement. I keep wishing they would come out with a smaller plier based tool to compete with the Leatherman Style PS or slightly larger Skeletool as it is nice to have that capability. I also don't quite understand why other manufacturers seem to fail so miserably on scissors so much of the time. Surely these are not an engineering challenge, we're talking about an implement that's been around for three to four thousand years! C'mon guys! My other gripe, albeit a minor one is that the steel on Vic knives could be better. I know it is a secret blend but though easy to sharpen they will not readily hold and edge resulting in more sharpening and eventually less blade. At current prices I suppose that doesn't matter too much but I would still pay a premium for one with a slightly better blade steel. Finally the scale tools are sometimes underestimated but a Compact without them is well just not a Compact. If something came along that hit those combination of tools and accessories with slightly better materials I would be all in I think.
