I have carried a Swiss Army Knife for more years than I care to remember. My first was a red Alox Pioneer. (They no longer make that model, yes I still have it.) That went from the United States to Germany, the Swiss Alps and back. It was only retired after the Bundeswehr received the new model. I now carry that and think it is one of the best for my style of camping. That hint about the Cork Screw for loosening Knots is a great one, and it works on frozen knots as well. Cat

I've EDCed a Swiss Army climber for decades and use something on it everyday. The corkscrew tip is a new one for me, great, thanks. Here's a tip I use, choke up on the blade to open boxes so you don't accidentally cut the contents.

Spartan + classic - my favourite victorinox combo!

I like the Sportsman over this. It's basically the same, but a little smaller. It has a nail file in place of the redundant small blade, plus toothpick and tweezers. The toothpick is really handy for cleaning out dirt and lint from the liners.

Great review, logical and I totally stand behind you 100%. I’ve been strictly edcing the Victorinox compact over 4 years now. I have tried many Benchmades, spydercos and others. But......always grabbed my compact I’ve the others. It works for me and haven’t had any issues. 🤗

YOU"VE GOT MY KNIFE! Seriously, my main Swiss Army knife is a Victorinox Spartan with black scales to which I have added the microscrewdriver and a pin. I used to have a Victorinox _Climber_ with black scales but some dirty toe-rag stole it and I bought the Spartan as a replacement. I fully agree that it's a great knife, very well made and comfortable to hold. It's always in my pocket. I also carry the Victorinox Classic SD (my third one as I've worn out/destroyed two others) which has scissors and a small file.
@wolf10662 жыл бұрын
@Barry Keating The Climber only had two more tools than the Spartan, anyway - scissors and a parcel hook... and I've got scissors in the SD. I was thrilled to find the precision screwdriver was available to buy separately and it makes a great addition to the Spartan - I wear glasses so it's great always having a screwdriver on hand to tighten the screws on them.

I forget the model but the one that adds the saw (useful for making trap and snare triggers) and the scissors (useful for cutting mole skin to apply to hot spots on your feet when hiking) is the one I carry. It still stays handy without becoming like a brick in your hand. Other than the Swiss Army knife, I like the Leatherman Juice with the saw and scissors. It provides the same tools and a decent pair of pliers which can be handy as a lid or pot holder.

great review. My regular EDC consist in a Spartan, which i carry on the small pocket inside the normal front pocket of the right leg of any of my jeans (when i purchase a jean i look for a model with this little pocket). But i have to say that for wilderness use, a more featured Victorinox could come in handy, like Climber or Huntsman. Or even go to the bigger brothers, like the Rangegrip 79 which i think it can replace a full tang knife for 99% of the cases

I have to say, its growing on me as my favourite edc knife. 9/10 times I have plenty enough knife with the Spartan. The awl is the most underrated tool ever. While I have cut myself with the blade, it was due to not paying attention when sharpening. I find if the blade closes on my finger, the force isn't enough to cause a cut.
@outdoorfriendsnet5259 жыл бұрын
Nice Video - I need in the Woods - a Blade a Saw - a Corkscrew - an Awl and perhaps a Tweezers. Its nearly like the Camper. Also good is the Victorinox Walker - only Blade and Saw and Tinopener. Or because of the excellent Awl the Alox Pionier.

It astounds me that people think a non-locking blade is dangerous, or that anyone can cut themselves because the blade doesn't lock. The only time you should ever need a locking blade is for self-defense. Where I live, and ten year old can handle a non-locking blade with complete safety. Kids grow up using such knives here, and there is no such thing as real woodsman who doesn't own a number of slip joint knives because several of the models needed for real woodsmanship, such as the Hunter, the Trapper, and best of all, the Stockman, always come with non-locking blades.

I don't like a SAK that has too many tools, but I need at least one more than the Spartan has. A saw is an absolute must. Not having a saw means the SAK is useless to me. I'm also one of those people who detests the corkscrew. I think the best think Victorinox ever did was replacing it with a number two Philips. In the city, my most used tools are the screwdrivers, the scissors, and the knife blade. In the woods, it's the knife blade, the saw, and the reamer. I don't absolute have to have the scissors, so his means the Hiker is the minimum SAK I need. The perfect model for me, however, is the Fieldmaster. The Hiker will do, but the Fieldmaster is perfect. It has every tool I use on a regular basis, and no tools at all that I don't use. It also has the parcel hook, and that one tool has save me from string burn so many times I can't begin to remember a fraction of them. It's also made camp life easier because it fits the bails on the pots I use, and the bail on my coffeepot. I got a deal at a local knife shot wherein if I bought a Fieldmaster for full price, I could get a second, cheaper SAK from the selection they had at half price. One of the models was the Hiker, so I walked out with a Fieldmaster and a Hiker. The Fieldmaster is my EDC pocketknife, and I keep the Hiker in a pack as my backup. The Fieldmaster has worked out so well I'll definitely replace the Hiker with a Fieldmaster, and give the Hiker away, but for now, I'm extremely happy with my choices.

The Spartan is more or less the base model from which most of the bigger models step up with additional layers. The Climber has a third layer with the scissors and the multi purpose hook on the back. The Spartan is a good choice for your first Swiss Army Knife. It has the basic tools, easily fits into each pocket and is very affordable. There's also plenty of them easily to find used in good condition for a few bucks. That makes the Spartan not only a 'must have' in each collection, it's also the perfect choice for kids and soon to be SAK addicts. I always have an open eye for Spartans on flea markets and other sales. If the tools are undamaged, I buy them, clean, oil and sharpen them and then give them as a gift to people I like.
