I work on a Beach. I have used both Leathermans and Victorinox Mulltitools. Leathermans rust, especially inside the pliers teeth. I upgraded to Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit X and for the last 2 years, I never had any rust issues, no matter if I left the tool with moisture or drops of water on it or not! Only part, that Leathermans are ahead of Victorinox, is the wire cutters. For anything else, I would always choose Victorinox.

Good day Vinnie, I was watching this video and it reminded me of some videos Mors Kochanski did a few years ago regarding care for your knives. I've been watching some old videos Mr. Kochanski did and he really had great ideas when it comes to wilderness skills. I remember your video of a tribute you did to him and I think that was very kind to recognize a man for his life's work. I noticed also most people who have wilderness skills don't use the large survival knives and prefer a smaller thin blade with a Skandi grind over the thicker bladed knives. I enjoy your videos and keep up the good work my friend. Thank You!

In my limited experience the Case CV steel rusts pretty quickly in Irish conditions. I believe the older knives were of a higher quality. My dad and I had a theory that a knife lost outdoors for a year or so made a great knife when it was cleaned up and the rust removed. @@vinniesdayoff3968 if I may offer some information regarding slip joint knives back springs & the most common reason they wear out or the pin breaks is due to opening two blades to half open position at same time along the same back spring. This is common practice among people showing the blades but it over stresses the back spring and the spring pin, resulting in eventual failure. I learned this from an older pocket knife repairman.

Hi Vinnie. Good yo see you back. I don't know if this will help with the Rough Rider, but when I worked on yachts and small boats a lot of things like tackle blocks would seize up solid. What we would do with them was clean them out in boiling water as the salt in solution would penetrate everywhere, dry and go incredibly hard. I suspect salt has built up on the spay backspring, the boiling water would usually get stuff back working after one time but always after two goes. No idea how the yellow scales will hold up but perhaps just pouring the water in will do the job.
@vinniesdayoff39683 жыл бұрын
That sounds logical Chris. There has to be some mechanical reason a strong spring would suddenly become weak. I've tried the boiling water as per your suggestion but there is no change yet. I'll try it some more. One of the guys suggested that the handle scales might have expanded but they are polymer as far as I know. I would like to find out what happened

I worked on the waterfront for a couple of decades. Victorinox knives will eventually rust and pit, primarily from lack of use I suspect. I've seen a lot of corroded SAKs that had been thrown into a drawer on a boat and hadn't been used at all. Just occasional use and wiping the blades clean with fingers keep those little fellers in great shape.

The only reason I can think why the spey blade might have lost any snap might be from swelling of the handle material or slight corrosion on the pins within the handle that might have affected the spring of the blade. I suspect that oil and opening and closing a number of times would return the tension to where it was before.

Good morning Vinnie, I'm getting back to you regarding my last post on Perkins Knives. This is what I was able to find on the internet. Perkin appears to be a 🇬🇧 UK based company but according to what I read the blades are mostly made in Pakistan. My experience with some of their blades has been marginal in quality . I made a knife years ago in my garage using an old circular saw blade and a deer antler for a handle my friend gave me. Old saw blades have high carbon steel and holds an excellent edge. Here's the trick, when cutting out the knife pattern you can't overheat the metal which will take away the temper process from the steel. The saw blade knife turned out pretty good and holds an excellent edge but as with any carbon steel you have to clean and oil it to keep the rust away. I just wanted to share this with you and I hope your doing good. Take care my friend.

Not allowed to travel to the beach?
@vinniesdayoff39683 жыл бұрын
Not allowed to travel more than 5 km for exercise except for groceries or "essential" reasons Steven. I could potentially receive a fine if found breaking the rules. Big changes and not to my liking at all

he told me if you see anything online that you want he can order it for you too. his website is not long up and running. and it mostly caters for higher priced blades. he is on facebook and Instagram . all the club knife makers are using these platforms because they can reach many more people.......its a pity you cant find him on facebook without signing up for an account and if you can and you saw something you want i could order it off him for you and post it to you directly....thats all the help i can give you Vinnie

Hi Vinnie. Good video you put together. I expected no less from the Swiss Army knife it's a tried and true brand for many years. I'm not very familiar with a Rough Rider knife. Then, well, a nail is a nail. Speaking of salty, I've just about had my fill of tolerating this political scam "virus" bull endlessly going on. Ok, I'll be quiet now. : -) Catch you next time Vinnie.

You echo my frustrations Hoonozit. There hasn't been much common sense involved has there, also, watch the nazi's and killjoys crawl out of the woodwork. Shows how things work in communist countries.

I use Vaseline on my blades then a light wipe with a paper towel....gives great protection. check inside the knife where the blade closes. most times on cheap knives they don't use high grade stainless between the scales. id spray WD40 inside to get rid of microscopic water droplets then coat the blade with whatever oil or in my case Vaseline

@@ahmelmahay Did you see the comment I wrote about the Rough Rider Joe? It had strong backsprings on both blades but by the time I finished one backspring was weak and floppy. I can't figure out what happened. It was washed and well oiled . Any input from yourself??
