I bought a Leatherman Wave when first came out many, many, many years ago and although that one disappeared I remember liking it better than the new one I bought recently. Using the Wave seems awkward to me when compared to my Victorinox Spirit. I’m really not a fan of the bits on the Wave. Both are well built and work, I just prefer the Victorinox and yes I do realize it is not Made in the USA.
@mud_rocker5 жыл бұрын
Isn't it made in Switzerland?
@ROE13005 жыл бұрын
Happy Noob Yes, Victorinox is a Swiss company and their products are made in Switzerland. Also, correcting a misstatement in my original comment. I have the Victorinox Spirit X, not the Spirit. I found a vintage Wave like my original and while I like it better than the new Wave I still prefer the Spirit X because of the handle ergonomics and the other tools being accessible while the pliers are closed. All are well made high quality products.

You actually save me a lot of money by reviewing all these multitools and bluntly telling me what's the most practical. I own a wave and my only complaint has been the sheath. The first sheath was fabric and started falling apart after several months and the second sheath (they sent me for free) is the leather one on the right in your video. I think I need the classic leather sheath because the rivets/pins are rusting out of the one I have now. Again, thanks for saving me money!
@AdvancedKnifeBro6 жыл бұрын
Yup. The sheath on the Wave is kinda sucky. If you’re carrying the bit kits, the nylon one is the way to go... even though it rides kinda high. The leather one is better, but still not as good as the original all leather ones. Glad they’re useful. I use my multi tools more than anything- because I use them for work- like you it sounds. Save I find a SOG and fall in love.. the wave is Leathermans best multitool and probably the best out there- despite its flaws- and I own nearly all Leatherman tools now. Yeah- it’s weird.

Leathermans break,Leathermans rust. Leathermasns generally don't last and have many other flaws "pinching your palm" not comfortable, are only a few,.That's why they make replacable tools and give limited waranty,while Vixcotrinox comes with lifetime waranty.IMHO If Leathermans where made in Europe and Victorinox was an American Company,nobody would buy Leathermans,because in comparison,they feel and work like junk. I have used Leathermans for years,they are is no cmparison.It's like comparing a cheap Ford to a Luxury Mercedes.Presision,quality,ergonomics and functionality,is by far better on the Victorinox.

I have both and while they are both great tools, the Wave is insanely more useful. Here's why: Spirit X + More comfortable to hold when closed + Satisfying clicks when opened and closed + Awl and chisel. Though I never used them, I can understand why they are good to have + Rust resistant - File is worse than the Wave's. Not really worse, but certainly not as amazing as the diamond coated one on the Wave - Blade is not one handed - Scissors really suck. Really, I have no idea why they are inferior than those on the 91mm SAK's. - Steel not as tough as LM's Now the Wave+ + Pliers open wider than the SpiritX + Diamond coated file + Better scissors + One handed operation. This is insanely useful in a lot of situations. You will be happy you got this feature. + Serrated blade is exceptional in some cases. And good to have overall, if people don't use it - that's because they don't know where it shines. + Yes, Replaceable wire cutters + Bit drivers. Surprised no one mentions it - Leathearman bits are replaceable and you can carry extra if need be. A sole fixed philips on the Vic is just sooo 20th century and unacceptable. + Also you get tiny bits for electronics. + Adjustable tightness on hinges. Once Vic gets wobbly - its a wobbly Vic, Wave - you can tighten up with its own bits. + 8inch ruler with 2 measurement units + Pocket clip + Cheaper Price - Heavier (8.5oz vs 7.4oz), but also shorter in length compared to the SpiritX - Some tools are not on the outside - Vulnerable to rust, though mine never had it TLDR: As much as I love the Vic, the Wave is a better tool in my opinion.

Good video. I owned a SOG. I lost it. Only feature I liked about it besides pliers being really pointy was the one I had used gear reduction for extra leverage. The one I had had tools on the outside AND inside so when gripping it for pliers, it really hurt my hands. I was tempted to get another one but I was looking for strong scissors/snips and large replaceable wire cutters (I really like the Leatherman replacement wire cutters best of all). Swiss Army brand has always been my non-pliers knife tool of choice but I need a pliers tool to keep on my belt for work. Good review. Convinced me not to get a Swisstool even though I honestly believe the build quality is #1 then Leatherman then Gerber in that order.

Love your style.....but i have to disagree on the file. The one on the Spirit blows the one on Wave out of the water, the coarse one that is. It files the undercutter on a reel mower like nobodies business and that's impressive. All in all a great comparison though.

You said the wave weights less and is more ergonomic. 1. There is disagreement about the ergonomics. I have seen multiple reviews that say the charge is more ergonomic, that the wave has pointy edges on it(that are not on the charge) that can be uncomfortable when gripping. Full disclosure: I have never handled the wave, so I can't say for certain which more ergonomic. 2. While the charge tti weights more than the wave, the charge + actually weights slightly less than the wave. According to the leatherman website. the wave + weights 8.5 oz the charge + weights 8.3 oz and the charge + tti weights 8.89 oz.

I have the wave, the surge, and the Spirit X. You point out the curvature, but there is a big advantage it gives the Spirit X over the Surge and Wave that was not mentioned. With the Surge and Wave, when using the pliers, you can give your palm a really nasty pinch. I had this happen to me with the Surge, and it almost happened to me with the Wave. Due to the curvature of the of the handles on the Spirit X, this does not happen. You don't have to worry about pinching your palm with the Spirit X.
@AdvancedKnifeBro5 жыл бұрын
I didn’t point it out, because in all of my 7 years of using Wave it has never once happened to me. Did you see my Wave review?
@TangomanX20085 жыл бұрын
@@AdvancedKnifeBro I was able to find the "Leatherman Wave 6 year Review. Comparisons to Original, New, Plus & other Multitool Knives." review, is that the one you were referring to? When I got my wave and Leatherman (I went through a multitool phase, probably got more than I needed), I had a techsupport job that was more hands on (I now work in IT work that is done remotely), I had occasional use for my surge's pliers. And I found I that had to be careful after one or two bad experiences using it. I caught myself almost doing that to myself with the wave. Basically the problem occurs when you either are cutting something, or trying to apply the pliers on something thin and narrow. If the object, say a nut, is big enough, it isn't an issue (unless of course it slips which will squeeze the handles together). Of course I am sure things like grip and hand size had something to do with it.

As long as i have nails and folding knives, opening tools in "SAK-style" and not having one-handed opening is never a problem for me, for instance. Also, Leatherman's warranty is great only in US; in most places it's pretty much inexistent and prices are ridiculously high, which are terrible. I believe it's a spot that Leatherman can try win with time, at least making a kind of "main shop" in each continent. In any case, to each his own.

I don't known, in places like Brazil it sucks. Prices are usually double of that in US and if you get one as a gift and it brokes you have to pay something between a kidney and a lung to send to US and get it back (under the risk of repeating the process in the future). The only thing that is superior about the SOG is the compound gripping pressure provided by the geared plier head (one of if not the best feature ever designed for a multitool, it is amazing) and the precision of the plier tips. Otherwise everything else is on par but mostly sub par to its competitors. The handle tools are customizable with just an Allen key but they are incredibly cheap in design and material choice. I keep a Power-assist right next to a Wave in my glove compartment to get the best of both worlds but if I had to take just one it would be my Wave.

hi i own the wave the surge the rebar the vic spirit and super tool 300,i like the wave but the bit driver not always is good,becouse is short and also i f i use the bit extender some time in tiny space i cant reach the screw,surge and super tool are very good but very heavy and i use just for work enviroment,the spirit is amazing is much better quality then the leatherman but the only think i didnt like is the wire cutter in the plier becouse is very small and not capable like the wave or rebar,the rebar is my edc multitools,i love it,it is easy to carry much slim than the wave,more light,better screwdriver in my opinion becouse it is 3d and much longer,better pliers much more strong than the wave,it have an owl,i like the rebar,i miss the scissor of the wave but i carry a victorinox swisscard in my portmoney,my dream tools it will be the wave whit rebar set of screwdrivers ti will be perfect but till now doesn't exist,rebar is an underestimated multitool,is really really good thanks alot

I wish they used harder steel and the screwdrivers were less polished - my phillips looks like ass and always cams out - also immediately rolled the edge on the scraper the first time I used it... at least VNOX warranty is great - I want to like the wave - but I wish leatherman used longer bits for their driver

I love the fact that I don´t use pliers and I can spend all my money on flashlights and swiss army knives, instead of carrying those big chunks of metal around....love the review though.....

If pliers aren't necessary for you, then yep- these are overkill.

The aspect that most Leathermans are disassemblable while Victorinoxs are not is missing in this review...

Sounds like you should do your own review then. I’d be more than willing to post below about the things you’ve left out.
