I've been told that some of these sirens had a seat to manually control the throttle and turn speed on these, I can only imagine being the person behind it, knowing and dreading that you are the herald of a horrible death. What's more, knowing that it is your civic duty to keep this running until the all clear is sounded, or until you die. These relics were built for a purpose, and had they been upkept, likely could have performed it to this day. Those few that remain, from what I understand there are only three that still work, should never be fully decommissioned. They are a show of history, and a reminder of the fearful powers that rose during the second world war. A reminder of why war was, and shall always remain, such a terrifying thing.

@@michaelbrown5838 Fair enough, man, fair enough, I'm big enough to admit my error. Still, seats for manual control in a machine designed to say that if you get into cover you might not die right away during the nuclear age is still pretty sobering a thought.

Yes, the earlier ones did have a seat to control the throttle. The later Chrysler in 1952-1953 had the option for landline activation.

Beautiful work you did. I heard these back in the day in Los Angeles county (last Friday of each month at 10:00 A.M. exactly, would be a 3 minute test). Believe it, they are LOUD!
@williamj5152 жыл бұрын
Growing up in Burbank, California in the 60's, the city had one of those sirens on top of one of the buildings at the city operated power plant. The last Friday of every month at 10 am, the city and Los Angeles County would do the air raid siren tests. That siren was definitely heard above the others. They would spin, maintaining a constant high volume, so it would fade in and out as it spun around.
