When I first went into ministry in 1992 I loved this song. In 1999 I had the privilege of serving a church in Louisiana; one of the youth pastors not far from our church was the grandson of E.M. Bartlett. Needless to say whenever we have youth events together, this song was sung AT LEAST once. Love this song. I have the privilege of serving as a Hospice chaplain now and use this song regularly.

It is a shame that this sort of thing is disappearing in some churches. Even as a young adult the classics are far better than the music they have. These hymns hit different compared to the ones they have now. I don't believe that it's necessary to modernize the hymns we sing.

Love this song with the exception of ONE line "Then I repented of my sins and won the victory". That's NOT how I won the victory. I won the victory by BELIEVING on Jesus Christ, not by repenting of my sins and turning over a new leaf. That's a works based salvation.

Kaleb Brasee Yea, sometimes unscriptural language is used in the hymns, although most of the ones that us baptists sing are doctrinally correct. But that particular phrase "repent of your sins" is such a confusing one when they try make it a requisite for salvation. However, the rest of the song is beautiful. By the way, love your work. This song is totally scriptural.... you guys just need to read ALL of your Bible and not just some favorite verses. :-) Matt 3:1&2 - In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, REPENT YE: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mark 1:14 & 15 - Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: REPENT YE, and believe the gospel. Luke 13:2-5 - And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, Nay: but, except YE REPENT, ye shall all likewise perish. Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay: but, except YE REPENT, ye shall all likewise perish. We have to read the WHOLE Bible, not just our favorite verses. Jesus said that " For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." And Hebrews 13:8 says that "Jesus Christ [is] the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." I am glad that Jesus can forgive us when we repent and give us a totally new life in Him, and He has done that for me.
