In the early 90's while living in Toronto Canada I met Russ Glover at an RC ship club. He was the nicest and helpful person at the club. We fast became friends and I heard some of his stories as a Sherman tank commander with the 1st Canadian Armoured Regiment and his stories battling through France and the Netherlands. During his time in the Netherlands he helped several families with food and other supplies. After the war he had stayed in touch with one of the families and every third year he would go over and they would host him and his wife Anne. Russ passed away a few years ago, RIP Russ my friend.

In 1962 I was a member of a BEA crew staying overnight in Holland and we were accommodated at the Hydro in Nordwijk aan See. In the evening we went out to dinner at a local bar/restaurant. As our meal was served we were approached by a Dutchman who asked if we were English and we replied that we were. He then asked if he and his friends could pay for our meal. We were extremely surprised, assented and asked the reason for this fine gesture. "Because you helped us during the War" the man replied. God bless the Dutch who still haven't forgotten the sacrifices that the UK and her allies made, in particular the Canadians, to free them from the Nazi yoke.

As a British person we are geographically closer to France . But I think in spirit we are closer to the Netherlands , and it seems like the liberation of Belgium , Netherlands and Denmark was like setting free our brothers and sisters . It was my grandfathers generation that did this but I do feel honoured that countries still hold the British and commonwealth countries in high regard for what happened .

I was there in the us army 1968-1970. A small NATO post in Brunssum NL in the southern part. The dutch people was most kind and friendly. I really miss the country. Hated to leave and several of my military friends said the same. Had great memories.

The nation was liberated by Canadian forces, British infantry divisions, the British I Corps, the 1st Polish Armoured Division, American, Belgian, Dutch and Czechoslovak troops. Parts of the country, in particular the south-east, were liberated by the British Second Army which included American and Polish airborne forces

Dad was there in the army catering corps and really loved Dutch people. I remember as a child looking through his cook book. His army record stated that the Dutch really liked him too.

pammyoneto I am sincerely sorry to hear that you had such a bad time overhere. I hope you understand that not all Dutch people are like that, or at least that not all of them mean to be rude (there are things that the Dutch consider "direct", whereas others would call it "rude", and not all Dutch seem to understand/know that).

6570 7278 Oh thank you for your kind words. My late husband was a Dutch man, he was a beautiful soul, he sadly passed away in 1999. Our children are also half Dutch so I know there are some lovely Dutch folk, mainly all are very nice people. Perhaps I was feeling a little sad when I wrote my comment. Yes indeed there are good and bad people the World over.

My father's Royal Engineers bridging company accidentally 'liberated' a Dutch village. As they drove towards the village they noticed flags hanging from the windows and the waving inhabitants pouring into the main street. At this point the commanding officer realised that they were actually ahead of the infantry, decided that discretion was the better part of valour and ordered an about turn - much to the disappointment of the villagers no doubt.
