An outstanding sad song from the film Amar Singh Chamkila (2024). The song loosely translates to “Bid me farewell”. It is steeped in the vein of goodbye that no heart is prepared to understand, much less accept. It carries the weight of unrequited acceptance, the universal quest for belonging, and the solitary pain of feeling like an outcast. The movie is a masterpiece biopic about a Punjabi Singer, who though immensely popular in his time, was a man misunderstood, a raw talent that some found too abrasive and crass for the refined tastes of traditionalists. He was shot dead along with his wife who was his co singer, by unknown gunman, while at the peak of his popularity. He was only 27 years old at that time.
The simple but outstanding lyrics are written by Irshad Kamil. The music is composed by the maestro AR Rehman. The song has been sung beautifully by Arijit Singh and Jonita Gandhi. The way this song is rendered reminds you of the masterpieces of the 1960s and 1970s.
