The girl playing the pregnant maid is so sweet & pretty. She is also patient and has experience dealing with kids because she have younger siblings at home. When she was raped, I was heartbroken for her that I instantly cried. Luckily, her employer is also kind and gave her the support & assistance needed. 😢😢😢This is my first time watching and I immediately subscribe. Looking forward to more wonderful and inspiring videos.

Statement from film director, Sabrina Poon: As Singaporeans, we like to believe ourselves as a society that is tolerant and gracious. But we are also pragmatic, sometimes to a fault that often makes our relationships with people appear merely transactional. Alas, we can still be quick to judge and measure people’s worth based on the convenience they bring us. This reality is easily reflected when we engage domestic helpers. Do we really consider them as family, or is it just a loose and fragile term that is easily jeopardised when you consider certain lines crossed? Would it matter if you realised that they are a victim after all? “Eggshell” tells the story of a single mother who is caught in a dilemma after discovering that her domestic helper pregnant. The dilemma is further complicated when she learns that her helper is a victim. Now, her decisions have gone beyond her obligations as an employer, and into something more personal - from woman to woman, she relates to the seriousness of the situation that should be handled with much sensitivity and deliberation. The title “Eggshell"" is the embodiment of all three combined; The idea that most helpers’ relationships with their employers feel like treading on eggshells, the theme of fragility and the malleable concept of “family”, and the delicacy of situations that are relatable and gender-centric to women. This short film is not an easy piece. It is not a female empowerment piece either. In “Eggshell”, I hope to offer a window into the perspective of the female characters as they arrive at an unspoken mutual understanding. That all things considered, some relationships are not just black and white.

instead of arguing that she should have known the consequences of getting drunk, we should instead focus on protecting our domestic helpers from situations like these. no one expects nor should expect to be sexually assaulted especially domestic helpers. they came here for new opportunities and a way to a better life. they are as human as we are but singapore's society treats them otherwise. it's time for a paradigm shift

This is so very sad on so many levels. I have read some of the comments below and it appears from the reactions that what transpired went over most people's heads. The mother is keenly aware of Maria's sensitivity towards Jared and the the special relationship and connection she has built with her autistic son. In the end she did not doubt Maria's story of rape for even 1 second and she supported her by sending her away. What is unclear is whether she sent her away to have the baby or to have an abortion. That is how short stories work. The leave gaps that make you think about what you just watched.
@Dante440x2 жыл бұрын
Even if she got pregnant with her boyfriend if there was, then other things should be evaluated as she is indeed a a nice person and you trust her. She can't be labelled as a bad person for having a relationship at 23 or because she is a maid. Of course, employer has the rights to send her away for some time and then come back for the sake of her kid. Trust is the key here as usual.

My experience in Singapore, my own boss always go club and drunk on Saturday night with his wife. One night he come to my room, touched me , kissing n licking my ear. In room I sleep with 4 kids. I am scared n wake up, he said sorry n told me that he think I am his son. Then in the morning I talk about this to his sister in law. She ask me to report police, I am really scared then I choose to go back home. Day after this problem, his mother in law send me to airport at 4 AM. Now I am working in HK, my 5th contract with one employer.

Dude why jared be getting so worked up over a spoon lmao
@bellefianti54264 жыл бұрын
Maybe. Just maybe Jared is autistic in this short film. Kids (even adults) with autism tend to hv obsessions over objects or routines. Any slight change, they may throw a tantrum. One of my twin is autistic, and she had the very same obsession; spoon. A tea spoon more exact. She wouldn't eat with anything else except with that particular spoon. We even had to bring the spoon out when we go out for meals. So yeah, the way Jared acts, it does seem that he is a character who is autistic. Hope that explains :)

I have had maids from Bangal, india, Nepal, Indonesia and the Philippines. I'd say so far Indonesia and Philippines are the best they are the ones who actually come to work not to become like the inherentiors of the house. but I.also also heard many horror stories about theses maids so I think it depends on the person. mostly it is now the employer treats the helper

Why did the maid get sent back instead of going to the police report? (i know she will come back again but why)
@honeycomb86693 жыл бұрын
I think they both know if they come to the police, they don't have enough evidence & no witness of the actual event, the case could be dismissed and and the government could just simply deport Maria and never see her again. Charis knows that Maria wanted to stay, she thinks the best way to do it is to abort the baby quietly then come back when it's done.

@@shedian5453 why not blame the rapist?
@gingin44713 жыл бұрын
@@shedian5453 In my opinion, the victim can be wrong too. I can't disagree with that, because sometimes people do things intentionally even if they know the risk of attracting this kind of attention. For example, the one I personally know the story is, they know very well the area is dangerous because serial rapist news, and they still went to the area for "test of courage" even when ppl told them not to. So the victim is 'also' wrong on tht part. But I emphasize on 'also' because no matter what the situation is, the rapist is always wrong. Just like robbing something is always wrong, no matter if the house has weak/strong security. So why not blame the rapist, who is clearly always in the wrong no matter what the situation is?
