Video 2: Test for Astigmatism

Video demonstrating the practical class activities for the PHSI2X08 Vision class. In this experiment we will see how to test for astigmatism and see a simulation of what astigmatism looks like using a lens. Due to COVID this class will be run online, for activities you can't perform your self you will be provided with example data to carry out the practical. This video will demonstrate the activities you would have carried out had we been able to carry out this class Face to Face.

To be real, astigmatism is hella hard to measure if you have small numbers on them. Not to mention that in my 3rd world country doesn't really care about small astigmatism but it is there and you also need time to measure which angle with their special lenses.

@@samiaislam9167 I suggest you can visit your eye doctor to measure astigmatism since it's hard to measure it with regular tools on eyeglasses shop The way I measure it is by watching this video and measure on each eye of which angle is the most blur; but this might be very inaccurate since you shouldn't do this on your own due to improper equipment. If you have astigmatism and short sighted it's even harder because they both apparently look the same on our eyes (for low magnitude of astigmatism)

@@negativepunk9638 thank you so much for ur reply.😭😭 I am feeling so frustrated. I have a little bit astigmatism. Though I use -2.5 sph glasses. but with glasses still i am facing starburst, haloes. I have gone to doctor, they said my eye glasses is right. they don’t want to recommended me 0.25 cyl Glasses.😭 but I believe I my astigmatism will be solved by 0.25 cyl. but no ones to check my eye power with 0.25 cyl power😭😭

I was told I have a pretty severe astigmatism by an optometrist as a child, though I never knew what the symptoms were. Now in my 20s, I've realised I don't have any of the related symptoms

I was diagnosed with astigmatism a long time ago, and the diagnosis has always been confirmed. I was unable to see any blurriness in the lines, but the numbers at the ends of the line were blurry when the paper was rotated.

The lines were fine I mean yes at some points they got fuzzy but the numbers are what I was looking at some numbers were a lot sharper than others whereas some numbers were more fuzzier than others but I already know I'm nearsighted so as I mentioned in the last video mine is -1.25

There's an even easier method, use a screen with a black background and a white square or dot in the middle, a shadow of the white figure will appear on screen and you'll be able to correct it way easier that way

My life using dark mode on almost every single website in existence. Every test I've had post cataract surgery is black dots or whatever on a white background and they aren't nearly as pronounced as when it's a black background with white anything (text, cursor, blank space, etc). Almost every website that has a dark mode, I use dark mode. And it's obvious AF that I astigmatism going on post surgery. It was never visible before, only after.

I have -6 in my left eye and -0,20 in my right one. I did this test and with left eye i didnt see literary anything. And with my right eyes i saw some Red lines. I dont know how but do i have astigmatism in my right eye?

I notice a wave in every line some times Maybe i have some times i find blurred the sides sometimes one of another But it doesn't affect me , I don't need anything if i can see , i can see details maybe , not very well some times , in this video , but i can know what it is in that , it is not a big deal

Hi raynac224, you are quite right, it is not the purpose of this video to actually test astigmatism. This video was made to wallk the students through a series of activities that they would be doing in a class looking at various tests of the visual system. The astigmatism test is just one of the tests they would be looking at. You can sort of see the effect when looking at the image in the video, but ideally there should be nothing between your eye and the test diagram you are looking at.

if you have relatively small astigmatism like mine (Oculus Uniter/both eyes Cyl -0,25) it's super hard to notice them but I do know I have them; because sometimes I'm having trouble driving, especially at night at dark places with minimum lights, that source of lights in the distance seems kinda weird (like have these lines and halos), and it also affected my driving
