"Poetry" is a stunningly beautiful and intense film. I highly recommend anyone to get the DVD.

Finally someone doing a video essay on Lee Chang Dong.

I've been binging all of Lee Chang Dong's films after having seen Burning. His films are beautiful, tragic, and deeply resonate with you. People cite Park Chan Wook as their favorite South Korean director for Oldboy or Bong Joon Ho for Memories of Murder, but to me Lee Chang Dong is probaby my favorite. The man is master of his craft.

My favorite Korean director, too.

Been really getting into Korean cinema recently. Park and Bong are both amazing for sure, but I after watching Burning, Secret Sunshine and Poetry I agree with this. I'm a huge fan of character drama, and Lee is masterful with his. I think his films are less overtly-gripping and therefore demand more focus from the viewer, but if you give them that energy then they offer so much beauty and meaning in return. And the performances! Fuck. I can't shake the scene from Secret Sunshine in which Shin-ae breaks down in the church - it's so simple, and all the more raw for it.

Wholeheartedly agree. Only early 00s Kim Ki-duk comes close IMHO. But all of Lee Chang-dong's films I've seen have been revelatory.

I went to see ‘Burning’ at TIFF, and Lee and Yeun were there answering questions. Amazing to be in the same room as such a legend.

Great video. Lee's style reminds me a bit of Paul Thomas Anderson. Both are my favorite directors.

The source material for Burning came both from Murakami's short story "Barn Burning," and Faulkner's short story "Barn Burning."

Hey dude, I was thinking about doing some video essays about Korean films and I searched to see what else was out there about Peppermint Candy, and honestly yours is the only video I could find. I like what you did and I'm glad to report it's nothing like what I had in mind to do, so we won't overlap. I did want to ask, did you have any copyright issues when posting this video? I am in Korea and I'm not sure how well KZbin Korea upholds the fair use of content for the purposes of analysis.
