I started collecting in the late 90's so I've seen the market change quite a bit over the years. The average price for a CIB NES game was $5 when I first started. A great tip would be to know your budget and stay focused on what you really want. It's easy to get caught up in buying filler.

Ok, so I’m 16 and this is prime time to collect. I get about 50 bucks every two weeks for allowance (thanks dad) and I have a job and my entire paycheck basically goes towards games. Also during summer, I’ll try to find some other simple ways to make like 20 bucks and just save up

The problem is people think that they won't have to spend money for a massive collection like yours and that's just not true.. There are deals to be had yes but it will still cost you. Collections take time to build and unfortunately a chunk of your money as well. Collecting is common sense, just look for the best prices by shopping locally or online. There are numerous sources out there, people are just so lazy to do the work for themselves.

Focusing on one system at a time is a great idea. I collect vinyl records and I try to focus on one or two bands at the same time. Currently collecting the King Crimson Steven Wilson remasters. They are about €25,00 each new and I buy one every month. That way I don't spend money I don't have and I will slowly build my collection with albums I love. I buy other albums during the month as well, most of those are cheap albums that I enjoy to listen to as well.

I've been collecting now for about 3 years. I have about 800 games.i could have more but I only buy what I want to play. I do not have filler and I only take a chance on cheap games. If I do not like a game it gets traded or sold

Collecting 2019. The Wii, Wii U, NES, Xbox 360, PS3 are the Cheapest, Even the N64 too. Unfortunately The OG Xbox, PS2, PS1 and GameCube, Dreamcast are getting costly or are already costly. You can find some things cheap, But the real good stuff and the games you mostly like want will cost you now. The Games are all over $15-$100 and in some rare cases higher in most retro shops. 6th Generation is gaining alot of notoriety for being the best Generation and now people are collecting for it. That Generation is a must to collect for now because it's gonna get out of hand real soon.

PS2 and Xbox games aren’t too hard to come by, unless they’re exceedingly rare games you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting your hands on a game from that time. Same goes for the hardware of these consoles.

Just started seriously collecting this year, it's alot of fun and I enjoy the consoles I collect for. The only thing that sucks is most of my older games I have to get from ebay, and sometimes the condition doesn't match the description and looks like junkyard trash. I put in for a refund ofc but it's wasted time

Hey man! I just started collecting for ps2. I have over 20 games so far. The ones I'm most proud of are xenosaga 1, 2, and 3 and monster rancher 4. It is kind of pricey and I am trying to get thos expensive grails like marvel vs capcom 2 and such. I found a harvest moon magical melody at a good will in decent condition for 2 bucks which for me was an cool find. Do you have any tips I should know collecting for this system? the video was very helpful 👍
@ObjoGaming4 жыл бұрын
You're starting pretty strong with your collection so far! PS2 is a pretty big library, so my biggest tip would be to focus on a certain thing. It seems like you like RPGs, so maybe start there? It's probably a good idea to get those before they start getting too expensive. Other than that I'd say just be on the lookout for deals at places like Goodwill or at garage sales if you can go to them. The PS2 was insanely popular so finding games for it is pretty common in my experience, so just try to pick up what interests you if you find it for cheap.

“I didn’t think anyone would want that”. I don’t do garage sales often but that is NOT what people say when I’ve asked. The area I live, people know that video games are not some worthless trash. In fact, they know enough to list it on Facebook on it’s own and ask for market prices. The is what resellers have done to the retro community.

do you have any tips for collecting for kids who can't get a job yet
@ObjoGaming5 жыл бұрын
I actually started collecting when I was young and couldn't get a job too, but games were much cheaper back then. It's still possible though! It depends on what systems you want to collect for but I'd recommend trying the cheaper systems right now like Xbox, Xbox 360, Wii, Wii U, PS3, and 3DS. If you have someone who doesn't mind taking you to places you can find games for those systems for really cheap at the flea market or at garage sales. If you want to get retro stuff I'd recommend getting the video game price charting app. A lot of retro game stores price their stuff well above what it actually goes for online so it's good to reference that app before buying anything to make sure you don't get ripped off. Good luck!

Facebook marketplace and swap meets are kind of the way to go now. Everything else is too pricey. I just got a lil stack of good ps1 games for 2-3 bucks a piece at a yard sale. The deals are out there but they are WAAAY fewer and farther between. Takes a lot more effort now to not spend too much money.

You should only collect retro games for your own sentimental reasons, reliving old games, or playing games you’ve missed out on. I don’t care for big collections or collecting “rare hidden gems.” Retrogaming these days just a fad that needs to die out soon so that real fans of these retro games can enjoy them instead having people who collect only the value who are holding these games hostage.
@Anilakify5 жыл бұрын
shiningwizard327 is it not possible for “real fans” to collect them, not for the purpose of “collecting their value” but for the purpose of sentimental reasons? If “holding them hostage” and keeping other people from enjoying them is your reasoning for not liking them, there are plenty of emulators so people can enjoy and relive them and for most games that the average person wants to play, there’s no shortage of copies of those games. The choice to collect physical copies of games is a sentimental choice for most people. You talked about people playing games they missed out on, well if I choose to collect games for a system I missed out on because I wasn’t born yet I’m not hoarding the games or collecting them for their value. I’m getting to play something I otherwise never would have gotten to play, getting to hold a piece of history in my hand, getting to experience what life and technology was like back then. A big game collection isn’t right for everyone but I think for most collectors it’s not about the value or keeping the games hostage from others who won’t get to enjoy them.
@ryanjackson73875 жыл бұрын
I dont want it to die out cause its helping gaming. The issue is because its more popular prices are higher. You can still get deals and find any game if you want it bad enough. Yes it sucks if you are starting to collect now for certain systems. but he did cover the cheaper ones to collect for. Me I did most of my collecting for my systems a few years ago before it got fully expensive.. I still buy things here and there for these systems but not avidly looking. I'm doing the WII right now cause its cheap and filling out my Gamecube collection. I wouldn't say people are holding them hostage tho cause they are all out there.
@inmyopinion21264 жыл бұрын
I don't mean to come across as a dick, but isn't this dangerously close to hoarding? I mean there's no chance you have played/actively play every single one of these games, I mean your collection is huge... You just have these just to have them right? Maybe you should explore the reason why you're hoarding all of this, you could have some deep rooted issues that you haven't faced yet that are causing your compulsion.

I think it’s a dick move to suggest to newcomers to make scalpers rich for ROMs that are free. Take the SNES for example: 1. Analogue Super NT ($200+) 2. SD2SNES ($200+) 3. Build your own custom ROM collection from the internet. (free) HDMI quality gaming with myriad options, zero lag, any and every game you could ever want including all Hacks and Homebrews. Why would you suggest otherwise... so you can make Collection videos on KZbin? Wake up, guy.

Everything we do in life can be considered foolish. The only constant that should be part of it are things that make you happy. I've seen people collect music, movies, shoes, etc. I'll never understand why people collect certain things but I dont need to. If it makes them happy then no amount of roms/isos will ever be a replacement for someone who wants a collection to show off as a centerpiece for their home. We live, we die and life is too short to care about an opinion that disagrees.
@squidyouknow5 жыл бұрын
It seems to me that you don’t understand why people collect games. It’s for sentimental value and for having something to display.
