I dig the Gamechasers, but I always cringe when they go into a retail store and make lowball offers on games. What's worse, is the owner feels obligated to accept the offer, because their store is on the show.

+Cameron Johnson (Atma Weapon Band) See it like that: Shop owners give them a good price so the shop can be shown in the episodes and a relatively big audience sees it and knows about it. They'll get more customers that way, so the deal works for both sides.

This might be true, but it will be misleading to potential customers, with them assuming they will get the same sort of deal.

Hey Ian, This isn't just video game collectors, it's a mass disconnect is going on in every industry with consumers. We live in an entitled society through and through. Everyone wants to buy everything now for the lowest dollar amount possible, yet want to own more. I think it's part status symbol for people, and part that they get a high from getting a deal. Don't get me started on people who want to collect for something, then become internet know-it-alls because they looked up a few prices on ebay. A lot of people forget that collectors tend to live and breathe that passion. The band-wagoners can't quite decide what their passion is; therefore, follow the diehards in hopes of catching the same wind. For example, unless he has them hiding, Pat doesn't also collect guitars, paintings, sports collectables, etc. I'm sure he HAS other hobbies and we have seen him collect some toys and comics, but it's not to the same extent. Pat doesn't collect everything in every hobby he has, and knows his own boundaries and goals within that collection. People forget that the collectors that love something love everything surrounding it and would whether or not the price was $5.00 or $50.00, and will be there long after those high prices fade. They were also there collecting before the bandwagoner's, hence the deals they found. If a person can't afford their hobby, start piece by piece, and be happy with what you have! If you can't afford the game, emulate it and save up and budget for it.

I love how Ian just tells it how it is. Sometimes people are clueless. Seeing "new" people just expect deals, hook ups, and everything handed to them. You have to put the work in! I wish I could walk into the store. Hopefully one day. I would never expect a deal, I just love looking at sweet NES/SNES games!

As an older collector, restarting after a sell off, I'm appalled to see the way new collectors act. sure, I remember the days when you could find games for $1 at garage sales, but even then games were more at stores. you can't beg for deals from someone trying to make a living. if people are looking for good deals, they just need to do a little looking, my current collection is valued at over 3 times what I've paid for it. you just have to know where to look.

I've been collecting for the Genesis and while yes while I typically don't like paying more than $10 for game I know it is also unrealistic. it's up to the collector to seek out deals like I do whether it be bidding on them on eBay or simply getting lucky at a flee market. And yes there has been a few times where I had to pay high prices for my games but that's just how the market is and either I pay or not get them.

The market became ridiculous when some lady put her Nintendo on ebay auction and ended up selling for over $10g's due to a Stadium Events cart. The bad part was the news articles & media kept stressing the "Nintendo" & "$10g's" part and didn't stress about the game. Goes to show that people don't read things or listen fully.

I have found some Japanese counterparts to North American games about half price. I know someone in Japan, and he sent me Mario Kart, Super Mario All Stars, and Super Mario World for $30. here makes a little for his trouble, and I got the games I loved in the day, English friendly enough, but with small differences. I also will buy lots, take what I want, and flip them. sometimes, I've made a profit. If I go to the store for something, I expect to pay retail. they did the scouting for me. It has been tested. Instant gratification has a price. It's convenience. How do you expect this store to survive if they don't add money to pay a lease, keep lights on, pay people, etc. Do beware of rip offs. Don't bitch when the price is fair. Finding the best deals involves leg work, networking, and patience. you have to be willing to give deals to get deals over time. Reputation is king. I don't insanly pick up anything, I wish I had the disposable cash. It may be slower, but at the moment I have enough games to last me a long time. so, why hurry? It has taken three years to get where I am. I have 14 systems, mostly from flipping lots, and trades. however, I have a small bookcase of games. Nothing like these guys. The thrill of the hunt is half my fun. playing is the other half. Enjoy collecting, don't stress more time trying to get games. Play the ones you have. if you finish one, or don't like it, try to trade. Hobbies are fun, and are for letting stress. In these days, many SD Carts are coming out. You can play everything, and you decide what you want a hard copy of. Above all have a blast, meet people, and Don't Panic.

Hey. Thanks to both of you and your podcast I picked up a copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 from the Nintendo e-store. I remember playing it and watching it being played at a friends house when I was really young. My parents did not get us a console until the SNES. Since I had enough I also got a copy of Lost Levels. Thank you to Ian. Your talking about people playing games and how that is important - I don't feel pressured to have to go out and find an NES or SNES but that it is okay to download games onto the wiiU. I am loving it on the wiiU. I have the pro controller which is great. So I fear you won't be getting any emails from me about deals. :-D I love my WiiU and my New 3ds xl. Many thanks. :-)

That's the thing with collecting now, everyone wants those games they saw being played on KZbin. The old Marios, Zeldas and Squaresoft RPGs are limited and will command a high price and will not be going down anytime soon. I was in a classic game/record store last week and overheard a girl talking about getting every Zelda title because she liked watching Game Grumps play it. Then when she saw the price they wanted for Majora's Mask in box she nearly flipped her shit. They wanted 89.99 for it and it was still sealed and in perfect condition. I almost wanted to tell her that's how game chasing goes, but I didn't want to be a dick.

Ian was cool to me when I picked up some games before at Lunar (this was over 5 years ago), I told him about how I just got a Nintendo 64 and bought some controllers off Amazon and was waiting for them in the mail. I basically tried getting 10 cheap games and he told me they weren't very good, old sports stuff like NFL Blitz, Quarterback Club and Kobe Bryant Courtside (multiplayer stuff), but after he recommended some cool games the total was like $60 when I thought I was intending to pay $25. He gave me a discount and I was happy, he's a good guy.

I'm just going to be blunt here I worked at a good-will for five years 2006-2011 and you wouldn't believe the amount of retro games/hardware that was donated over time. While working there I got a Nes, Snes, SMS, Sega CD model 2, 32x, 3d0, Atari 2600, intellivision, and slew of games for every system up the 5th gen. I got lucky when I started to collect games back then. I'm actually happy that I didn't have to pay these prices back when I was collecting games back then. However times have changed, I still go the good-will I used to work at and they are saying they don't even get in N64/Ps1/Dreamcast hardware or games anymore. Ian and Pat have stated countless times, this is a collectors market now and if you don't have money to get into this hobby, well your shit out of luck.

This is how i plan out when I go to mom and pop shops and even pawn shops when i go game hunting I never expect to pay full price unless i only walk out with 1 or 2 games, and what i normally do is i always check out a store first before i make my first purchase from them. Phase one, I check out the store, I look for some main stream titles, castlevanias, marios, final fantasys, zeldas , and so on, the titles every one wants non the less, even if i already have the titles, I make a list in my head of prices and i go home and check price charting and ebay, if they are AT ebay prices or 5% under or more I alway come back in. Phase 2, I try to always find at least 3 or more titles I want in my collection n pull up a calculator, add them together and take 25%, 20% and 15% off the final price ( not including tax )and put those 3 numbers in my head. Phase 3, Go up to the counter and haggle, (make sure you have cash its easier to haggle if you say you have cash), and I'll say will you let me take these off your hands for "the 25% off price" and ill go down the line of the 3 numbers I have in my head, 95% of the time I can always get them for the 15% off price, some times I get lucky and get them for the 25% off price, its hit or miss. What also helps a lot too is if you bring in trade in's of titles you don't want anymore or happen to pick up at a thrift store or flea market cheap, one store near me gives me 50% value trade it on top of 25% off purchase when i buy 3 or more games. always leave with a stack lol

I can understand if a person just wants to play chrono trigger or something like that, but if that is the case... buy the rerelease on DS, on the virtual console, or many of the several places you can find that game. Some JLN or licensed game that will never be re-released again, I can understand, but the games mentioned in the example are all ones you can rebuy, (Plus there is always emulation on those limbo license games)
@Agamemnon2

+thepokekid01 Agreed, you could buy a DS and a copy of Chrono Trigger for it for less than what the SNES version sells for (seen it selling between 60 and 100 euros on SNES and the DS version is around 30-50 plus another 30ish for a system). With that game, it specifically seems that the cheapest way to play it off an original cart or disc is to learn Japanese, the Super Famicom version seems to be cheapest by far.

4:45 I can atest to this statement. Even if I took forever looking through the games (sorry, I get carried away sometimes...) I was helped by whoever was in the store, be it Ian or one of the other guys. I found some good choices, got future recommendations, got advice on hardware fixes and held fun conversations. With that said, it's probably also good that the prices are where they are, else I would just have a field day and walk out of the store with everything; the high prices help to limit my choices and search for hidden gems.

So let me tell a story about Ian being an all around cool dude. My wife and I used to work at a farmers market down in Pacific Beach close to the other luna location so once a month on sunday we would go in and buy games and chat up Ian or any of the other great employees there. Normally its pretty slow on sundays but one sunday we came in to a packed house and Ian is there we talk he tells us he is stressin because he doesnt have change. Luckily we had a money box in our van so we ran back grabbed it and gave him change. So I had some trade value he gave me extra ten percent on it he didnt have to and I didnt expect it. So moral is be nice and good shit happens.

Are they gonna add imports like Europe Only Releases, or just stick with North America, do they wanna add the unlicenced, the homebrews that are still being made and putting on carts today? Do you count bootlegs? What about unreleased games that are leaked and then put on a reproduction cartridge?

If a nintendo game (SNES, Genesis, N64 etc.) sells for a certain price on ebay I except to pay a price close to that amount from a local store. Where I have a bit of a problem with stores charging ebay prices is with stuff that is not as common and not as collectable. (Ex. Commodore computer stuff, Vectrex etc.) For example a local store had a few Vectrex games and a system someone brought in. I bought the system but the store wouldn't cut me a deal on the games. I live in an area with a small population where I am mostly likely either the only Vectrex collector or one of a very few. It would be very difficult for the store to sell those games - they will most likely hold up space on their shelves for years to come.

At my local game store (at least it was until it closed down last month), they charged about $30 more than Ebay charges for each game. How'd you like a copy of Super Mario and Duck Hunt for $35? At least that's what it would be if they ever had a copy - only 15 million copies of Golf and occasionally a cartridge of Donkey Kong Jr. Math. These people should be fucking grateful for this store.

You could say I'm late to restart my snes collection, but through thieves, bad weather, and bad luck in general, I've lost my collection 3 or 4 times. The thing is, I pretty much only want games that I played when I was a kid. Dkc series, mario world 1 & 2, ect.. They're fun games at reasonable prices, and personally, I have never seen a dck cart that I wouldn't pay the price tag for, those are priceless games that represent a priceless time in my life. I've since gotten quite a few of the ones I had when I was a kid but the elusive Boogerman... Great times... The thing I have noticed with newer collectors gripping about prices is the ridiculous craigslist ads they make. Stop cluttering up craigslist with ads, acting like your a good guy and people should sell you games for next to nothing because it's a moral issue!!!

Well put Ian. I am sick of all these people telling me "oh it's just inflated right now, it's not really worth that much" for all major titles. The last time I remember talking about this was Mega Man. You really think demand for something like Mega Man is just going to drop off one day? Everyone wants Mega Man in their collection (except Pat apparently, haha), that's why it costs what it does.

Thing i find annoying is that people get these games on Ebay for the going rate with the intention of selling them off again at 40% or above the price they paid for regardless of how overpriced it may seem.

Americans should be thankful they can just walk into a retail store and buy NES/SNES games from a guy like Ian. Being in a small country, I have to buy everything online and it sucks majorly. I'd love to be able to just waltz into a shop that sells stuff like that. If I want anything older than PS2, I have to find it online and pay crazy shipping!

I will say, it's okay to haggle with the right context clues. If the place is right, and the markup is legitimately very high, and the product is in a certain condition, *and* it's not sold for quite some time, you can respectfully bring the price down. Local game store had a copy of Melee, no box, but in *perfect* condition. $60. The cheapest example I could find online was $40, in worse condition. It had been there for a month, likely turning people off without the case. I know they have to make money- I kindly asked if they'd take 50 and they did. Just know your shit before you start asking for discounts lol

I usually buy lots to build my collection and sell off the games that I don't need or want on eBay. I always set my prices right around the lowest you can find on eBay for whatever game it is, but I still get assholes who try and offer me like 2/3 or half the price and want free shipping to boot. I always just ignore them and don't respond to their emails, but I want so badly to tell them just to fuck off.

Do you pronounce chronology "crow-nology" or "krawn-ology"? Is it the latter? That's probably why people do that. How about complaining on the pronunciation of "epoch". I hear "eee-pock" from people when it's clearly supposed to be "epic" as in chronological epochs. But in all honesty, who fucking cares? You know what they're talking about when they say it and that's the point of communication so just leave it at that.

It's simple. if you do not want to pay the $80 for a game, shop around, be patient. Look around on Facebook sale groups in your area, and to where you would be willing to travel. Go to yard sales, thrift stores, etc. Ebay is not the only place you can get games. I got Chrono Trigger for $1 a year or two ago at a yard sale. I know it seems wrong to take advantage of people who don't know what they have, but their loss is your gain. It's capitalism and it works. The ones on the Facebook groups who say "I know what I have so don't low ball me" and have everything priced at the highest people are asking for the game, they are doing the same thing.

Joseph Bearup I know exactly what you mean, I'm 35 as well and have watched this retro-collecting craze get out of control. I've had large collections of games and now I've sold most everything off. The great thing about eBay is that just about anything is available at any time, as long as you've got the cash. I don't need to own every game I want anymore. If I ever get the craving to play Chrono Trigger again, I can always just pay the $80 on eBay, play it, and then resell it back on eBay to get most of my $80 right back.

I understand why some games are more pricey, trust me I've been looking for a copy of megaman 5 for years to complete my megaman set for the nes. It's my least favorite in the series and on a good day costs $80, am I willing to pay that much? Hell no but I don't complain when I see it go for that price. I'd rather bide my time and see if I can find it in the wild rather then try to lowball someone who i'm just going to end up insulting and lose that relationship as a buyer. The only time I lowball is when everything in a store is overpriced, I've had to say to a few store owners, "Look, if I wanted to pay ebay buy it now prices with shipping, I'd go to Ebay. I understand you have a business to run but your prices are off" (Keep in mind this only applies to re-sellers that overprice EVERYTHING and know this, there are plenty of game stores and re-sellers that are fair and even willing to work out deals, this is not about them just about the assholes who think they can rip-off anyone to make a quick buck).

Let's be honest if you aren't familiar with this stuff the prices can be shocking. I mean if you're 35 you grew up with the NES onward and were old enough to enjoy all of it. The prices just seem unreasonable to a newbie because this stuff isn't really that old. It's easy to be taken by surprise at how pricey it is. That said you either accept reality and pay the price or bow out of the hobby and look towards re-releases or emulation. The prices being high sucks but you aren't owed a cheaper price because you don't like the reality of it.

For me (I'm 20 - stated in 2009) My limit is $30 for an average game and $60 for a most wanted title (Mario RPG for example) For a game that is out of my range, (Earthbound) I'll just get it on VC or emulator to play it, and hope I eventually find it in GoodWill for $3.

You shouldn't be too annoyed by new collectors or people who have been collecting for awhile but refuse to pay high prices. I have been collecting for awhile now and refuse to spend more than around 10 dollars for a game. Instead I rummage around in goodwills and craigslist finding great deals. It is so much more satisfying than retail stores. retail stores have such a limited supply so their prices are inflated. if every single person would go in and donate their games prices would plummet because retail supply would skyrocket.
