As a UX Designer who actually worked as a Game Designer for several years I’m rather shocked about NN‘s obviously poor understanding of video games. No proper research? I suggest to read Jesper Juul‘s exelent book „Half-Real“ on the topic. The discovery of the user interface can be very ergodic, a satisfying gameplay experience in it self and therefore rewarding, up to the feeling of mastery of a very „difficult“ user interface. Also „surprise“ and other emotioneering (tm David Freeman) are elements (unfortunately) rarely used in service interfaces, although it has great potential. But maybe we are comparing apples with oranges here, making Video Games is an Art, UX Design a Craft.

Video game experiences are driven by intrinsic motivations where the experience is the goal, unlike service design where the UI is means to an end to provide some tangible outcome. Basically players are looking to empathise with the experience of video games (feel like a hero, villain, soldier, superhero, etc.) whereas in service UX design, the designers are looking to empathise with the users to eliminate their pain points.

Best definition, through the time you will get different experience with a game, in contrary to a product where it will be the same

That's the first NNg-video I do not totally agree with. He did not mention important aspects like immersion that will break the whole game experience if the ui does not fit to the theme of the game. Also, I felt he could have mentioned gamification of game-related eshops, for items or in-game money. I highly recommend the channel extra credits for these topics.

That’s not completely true, Video games can solve real world problems like improving the vocabulary or explaining the history

I could be wrong but I dont think Mr Nielsen ha never actually played a first person shooter game so doubt he can really undrstand the player.

One big difference in Video game and app/web UI is that, Video games UI are to help the player with virtual goals, while web/app UI can help with physical goals. In my opinion, as people continue to learn UI, the two will only have that one difference.

Hilariously dismissive. Why bother to speak on a subject you clearly haven’t researched? Spend some time talking to an experienced games designer, learn new ways of thinking.

Not achieving? You haven't played right

The city I live in does not have a strong video game development community, but there are lots of traditional UX jobs. If I want to work in video game UX in the future, would experience in traditional UX help me get a foot in the door in that industry?

It Depends.... Different video game have its own target users. Educational or for people like mmorpg etc. What would MVP look like? Is it something like New World or fornite? How about plugins/update (enhancement)? Once you understand your target audience and get more data from your mvp. Then think about should we work on plugins or move on to different project. For example, the MVP is out, people like the ideas, research on who should be the next group of target audience? Should we do some more advertising? How about get some streamers and have events? Should we target people have the money to buy skin ? Who are those people? Etc. Of course interface is important for user performance. Do we need editable keybind feature etc. Hope it help.

I stopped watching when he says: "video games in some sense had no real purpose other than being fun and enjoyable to play, but they are not achieving anything…"
