I totally understand why he did that. I have lots of games where it's been years since I played. Sometimes it's boredom, sometimes frustration, sometimes something else, but it happens. What may not be obvious in the story is the save he was coming from was probably a long slog from where he ended up, so he lost maybe a whole dungeon's worth of progress each time, was tired from hours of random encounters at every step, and didn't come back. Incidentally, in any Final Fantasy game or anything with save points, if I see a save point my instinct is to immediately save there before doing anything else. FF1 had some huge fights from chests early on in the game, incidentally. I don't recall if there were dragons in chests, but there were definitely some you'd hit if you stepped on the square next to a chest

This works in tabletop games as well. My players normally are very dutiful about checking for possible traps everywhere. However, my villain ducks down a secret passage with just a sliver of health remaining. The party chases after him, and notices a richly-engraved chest in the escape tunnel. I actually never beat 7 for similar reasons, sort of. So I'm playing the endgame, putting off the final dungeon to power-breed to golden chocobos. I do that in a few hours, grab the super summon materia you can only get with said chocobos. Then I get the brilliant idea to test it out on the optional bosses still kicking around, a flying dragon type thing and an underwater monstrosity. The dragon goes down like wet paper. The other guy, not so much. My ambivalence to dying turned into impotent rage and misery when I realized my last save predated the chocobo racing binge. I had a similar story to #1. I leveled up my evasion to no end, but I never leveled my hit points, defense, or magic defense. It was great at first, but I eventually encountered magic users. They would one-hit kill me every time they cast a spell. No way to level up hit points if you die, and weaker monsters couldn’t hit me, so I had no choice but to start my game over. Either a dragon or a mimic, game developers love to troll the greedier "opens every treasure chest on the map" players. My love/hate relationship with DragonQuest always involved me dying to a mimic 65% of the time...30% failing to beat a particular boss because I bumrushed through an area neglecting to level up. And the rest I got lost and didn't know where the next plot point was. #relatable

I got to Final Fantasy 6 after playing the Phantasy Star series on Sega, so I was pre-immersed in the grind. A lot of the endgame fights that a friend (who'd grown up on Nintendo and Final Fantasy) had cursed as really hard, didn't feel like much.

I always keep multiple save files in rpg's. One in the last town, one at a good resting spot during a quest, and one just for progression. That way if I get to a very difficult part or realize I miss something I can just load an earlier save
@DamnDaimen6 жыл бұрын
I tend to keep 3 and just rotate them every time I save.

In those early RPGs you didn't get to do that. You'd set a save for a game then go to the town inn or save using magic items and that always affected the one save for that game. There was no option of picking.

@@jeffmurphy8283 I think 7 was amazing but that people tend to forget that part of its magic was in the time that it was created. It's hard to look at that game the same way now that we have all of these other modern choices. It's just hard for a modern day audience to emotionally connect with the characters when modern day games have more polygons in a single eye than they had in their entire character model. It would be like if the avengers movies were made today with 80s cgi.

My favorite description of DnD humans (by a goblin) was, "...that humans are incredible creatures because if you give them a box, they will open it, no matter what. A dwarf will examine it, an elf will judge it, but the human's curiosity will always win out. No matter what the context, or the danger, even if they know something bad is inside, a human will desperately wish to open the box, even if it dooms them. If you want to spring a trap on a human, put it in a box."

Hugo Fontes well, it was my first Final Fantasy game. It was the two pack gameboy cartridge. When I first begun to favor it was when I realized each of the characters were not limited to their basic roles. Guy could be a mage, Purple hair could be an ace wielded, etc.. I also just ignored the level up system and just played the game for the story. I never finished it though XD still working on that now

IX has had, at the very least, a resurgence. X will always be a personal fave, I love the sphere grid even if I can't find any freaking LvL 3 Keys but have LvL 4s in a abundance, and I ADORE being able to tag in Party Members in the middle of a fight because it's so much easier to keep them relatively even level even if it means I start every encounter with Riku using Hastega.

Final Fantasy 6 is the only numbered Final Fantasy for consoles I have not beaten. I couldn't figure out how to get past this one point. Even using online tips couldn't unstick me. I remember fighting a few bosses in that place. There was monster which had been around since the beginning of creation. Sitting on top of a save point. There was an angel of some sort. Which could confuse your party members. Then there was a demon. I killed all of these. Though it was slow. Because your party members all have to be decently leveled. It was the maze which stopped me from completing the game. Not the difficulty of the bosses. Though I have to admit. Those are some above average bosses for any rpg.

For the record I really enjoyed FF9 it has an amazing story and by far the most diverse character set but i understand it got heavily overlooked as a game in general as FF7 was a huge hit, FF8 let down a lot of FF7 fans and FF7 became priceless at the time FF9 came out. FF10 then released ages later with next gen graphics and so poor little FF9 fell into the shadows with even die hard Final Fantasy players not even picking it up but hey maybe people just didn't like it i don't know i thought it was good.

The funniest thing for me with FF was in IX, my best friend was fighting a boss and it took him almost an hour to defeat it... I loaded up my own save, right before the same boss, and K.O.ed it in one turn. My almighty attack? A Phoenix Down. My friend raged so hard how I did not tell him about it and how he spent almost an hour fighting the same boss. My reply was that he never asked me for help. He shut up when I said that and shrugged and said "Fair enough."

There were no bad numbered Final Fantasy games. I played Final Fantasy 1-9, x, x-2, 12, 13, 13-2, Lightning Returns, Tactics, Tactics Advanced. My personal favorites were 13-2, 8, then 7 in that order. While this treasure chest is cheap. There is one other battle which is cheaper. At the end of x-2 you sometimes run into Tiamat instead of the final boss. Tiamat is in another class compared to Vegnagun.

[Probably by not making it a FF game to begin with but each title is experimental.] (for those wondering the game opens up crazy amounts compared to the way it started out, but unless you want to stop the story completely for the next i dunno hundred hours or so you cant really get a grip on it. its far too little {or maybe to much?} to late.)
