I think obviously fake and scripted enthusiasm is less of a "COVID19 issue", as it is a "game industry issue" that COVID has either robbed us of the patience to put up with, or simply made (even) more obvious. Particularly on point with the comment about Sakurai character presentation videos, which are always pitch perfect in tone. I wish all game marketing was like that.

Man sometimes I have those same thoughts and I wish I had the talent of Kyle to make a good video about it :) So right about BS scripted excitement VS simple regular dev talk. I feel japanese devs are so much more natural in their PR than americans. Its like they’re not ashamed of talking specifics, they don’t need to dumb down everything to « Cool, amazing, exciting, LETSGOOOO »
@Ayoul3 жыл бұрын
I think there's some confirmation bias here about japanese PR. We remember the best presentations like Sakurai's, but some of them drag a real long time and are really dull. Both ends of the spectrum have their flaws IMO.
@timytimeerased3 жыл бұрын
@@Ayoul I said more natural, I didn't say literally every japanese dev is improvizing. They're not, but what they say makes sense most of the time, it isnt buzzwords, they don't speak 5 min about nothing "We really care about our community and we're as excited as you and we wanna hear your feedback and we love you and we're in this together" and just state what the game is, where they are right now, whats the plan. You can find Sakurai dull, but he never waste people's time, he just goes into extreme detail about the GAME not the excitement of the game, not the "hype" for the game, he talks about the game itself.

In the periods after The Final Bosman (and Bosman at Home), I watched other stuff and slowly started to cope with it having ended. Life goes on, channels come and go. Sometimes I thought back and wondered why the end of that show was a big deal at all. Episodes like this remind me why that was such a big deal. Thank you for doing this again.

I follow your work since you started at GT ( I'm Vinnie0003) and I'm really glad and happy to have your input about this kind of subjects! I've been talking about the way many companies communicate with us, not only in English but also in my native language (Portuguese) and almost always feels like they are trying to "guide our hands" towards their products like if we don't know what their are talking about and they know what's better for us to consume because our brain doesn't work or even exist in the same plane as theirs, so "eat that info like that", put of touch and impersonal and made to work in full with your limbic system and finally, give your hard earned money to us because, well you are nothing but a wallet to us. Please be excited 😆

Just a comment about the Fiji stuff. Weirdly Rugby Sevens (which is what they play at the Olympics), not Rugby, is Fiji’s national sport. And why I understand what the commentator was saying (even though is sounds silly because winning the gold medal won’t fix Covid) is because in England the Football team doing well was massive for the country - just in terms of being a big lift for everyone after facing a year of so much shit. Maybe it’s hard to understand as an American but the entire of the England just lives and breathes football. Due to many teams having origins from unions, factories and general working class institutions people are just so attached to the sport. It’s nothing like the franchises of the US for NFL and NBA. And the team were such great role models since many of them come from poor backgrounds all over the country. I assume the population of Fiji feels a similar way about winning the Rugby gold two olympics in a row. Yes won’t solve any issues, won’t stop Covid, won’t increase vaccinations - but I think a lot of people are feeling shitty and sport is just a nice thing to take pride in as a nation (as much as I think countries as a concept are stupid) sorry for the rant Bossie - love all your work (I do share your sentiment about the Japanese population being screwed over. 80% of them didn’t even want the olympics)

Last years Realms Deep was one of the best gaming events I've seen; every trailer had gameplay, it had a ton of interviews that were actually interesting (mostly because they were pre-recorded and weren't scripted), and there was little to none of the bullshit marketing. Tom Waits, to me, is a purveyor of the downtrodden. He likes to sing praises to the underbelly of the world. The forgotten. In that, I think you two are alike. You celebrate the 4s and 5s of a game. 15 Minute games is a remarkable example of this: you put a highlighter on the weird and expose it in a playful way that doesn't cast shame like so many like to do. Even the games you, yourself, make are an inspiration to me in my game making career in the same way that Tom Waits is to me in my story crafting. You both pinpoint a uniqueness in the world and celebrate that uniqueness in your own unique and charming way. Being compared to Tom Waits is one of the highest caliber comments I can give, my friend. Kudos to you.
@tylerstravis3 жыл бұрын
As a massive longtime fan of Tom, and not nearly as long as Kyle (Kyle hasn't been in the game for 50 years), I was ready to tell you how you got them both all wrong. I'm happy to see that this is a drastically different take than I was expecting you to take. Nice take :)
@RickGenis3 жыл бұрын
@@tylerstravis Hahaha Tom Waits has been my favorite musician for about 13 years now. I'm sad to say I got into his music far later in the game than I'd have liked, considering the first time I had heard him and loved his music was when 12 Monkeys came out and "Earth Died Screaming" was on the soundtrack I owned but didn't get into him until after I started working in record stores at 23. I'm assuming you were expecting someone to say it's because he's abrasive or weird sounding? Bosman certainly doesn't sound like "the cookie monster" (which I find far more attributable to Loui Armstrong than Waits). Waits is also the perfect blend of that weirdness but toned down, unlike some of his inspirations like Captain Beefheart - creating a more suitable experience to dip one's toes into the avant garde. Not unlike King Crimson or Tool is a good first step into the wildness of Prog rock, rather than delving straight into Gentle Giant or Omar Rodriguez-Lopez.
@tylerstravis3 жыл бұрын
@@RickGenis I'm lucky enough to have seen him live about a decade ago :) I was expecting someone to take there persona aspect of it.
@RickGenis3 жыл бұрын
@@tylerstravis Yeah I'm pretty jealous. My old manager (RIP) used to always brag about having driven to the mid west to see him and that he loved that Waits would stomp, and dust would fly up into the air. Sounds so awesome. Yeah I could see that, I suppose. They do both carry personas. Though Kyle is far more prone to bits than Waits is. What's your favorite album?
