The Video Professor and his student helper Suzanne take us on a tour of the Internet via Prodigy, circa May 1995. Back then Yahoo was a manually compiled list of links, rather than a search engine!

My first exposure to the web was through Prodigy back in 1995 - lots of nostalgia there, though if I were Santa and someone used ALL CAPS to ask for a new modem, they would be getting a lump of coal for Christmas.

This might seem funny now, but in the 90's the internet was not easy to figure out (unless you used AOL prodigy, Compuserve...) At my house we used prodigy for a few months, I would have been in 7th grade at the time (1995). Then we switched to a VERY small local ISP startup that offered a fair unlimited dial up plan. I had been dialing in to BBS's for a while by this time so I picked it up quickly. I remember trying to figure out how to connect to an FTP server and download the "Hey Macaroni" screen saver in 1996. It took me forever.

Boy do I feel old when somebody who could easily be my kid talks about the good 'ole days. (Was in 7th grade in 1972 😂) My high school in 1977 had a room sized IBM mainframe with no display that read paper cards typed on a mechanical machine and displayed only through a deafening line printer. When the Apple II came out in 1977 and my rich friend played chess on it, I thought the future had truly arrived 😂

Wow so many memories.... I remember nagging my dad to get us a modem in about 1993, (14.4 U.S Robotics) so I could connect to the local BBS in the paper, soon after the AOL & Compuserve CD's started coming on the front of computer mags & in the post, we used them a bunch back then - rolling from free month to free month! Huge phone bills...disconnects when someone went to use the phone when you were online, fun times!

Last time I went on the net with 3.11 was when I was given a Compaq LTE 25 Mhz B&W laptop on work experience in Y2K. Connected my serial modem, got hold of Trumpet Winsock (eh?) and Opera web browser (when it had adverts). Shame it had the world's biggest dock (ISA NIC?) and no standalone PSU. A mate would get similar ones from car boot sales and use them in high school, until a teacher tripped over the huge adapter and it let go with a flash!

I have Internet since 1996 and never had a dial-up modem. We had something called ISDN here in Germany, which was a digital network. No stupid noises during dial up and a simultaneous telephone call was also possible. Connection to the provider was established in a blink. Speedwise is wasn't much faster than the fastest modem, 64 Kbit/s on one line and two combined 128kbit/s (but double cost).
@wrightmf10 ай бұрын
you never used dial-up? wow, you must be rich.

35:31 That is when you're wrong. Today, it's called internet cache. The internet browser stores files onto your hard drive from the website you visit for the first time that it loads, so the next time you visit the website, the internet browser goes through the cache, so that it can load the website faster. That is when clearing your cache comes in when your internet experience goes sluggish for whatever reason... Or... does anyone here use the CCleaner computer software? :P

Wow. It appears that the Prodigy service used what looks like a rebranded version of NCSA Mosaic, which is interesting to me, though wouldn't have been interesting for the time. I think AOL might have used the Trident engine from Internet Explorer for the Web component (on their Windows version) of its software (then later switched to using Chromium's Blink engine in the 2010s) 42:20 Wow, I didn't know there were MMO games in the 90s.
