love the pst. its size and shape and weight is perfect.

why they discontinued the pst is beyond me, the newer leathermans rust because they dont even try to polish the tools, literally within 24 hours when out walking in the rain with the tool in its sheath it rusted. my other major problem with leatherman is that they overharden the tools and they snap for a past time. my victorinox swiss tool has been through hell the past 20 years without any warranty claims or rust compared to the 5 claims with leatherman, absolute shite the newer ones past the pst era.

@Mountain Bear outdoors The original models used a different type of stainless steel with more chromium so they were more resistant to rust, but it made the steel too soft. They moved to 420HC in the early 90s and have used this ever since. Victorinox have used the same X55CrMo14 for even longer, have different process for heat treating and do it in house. In my opinion, Victorinox have better quality control.

@@MultitoolsandBlades thanks for that I didnt know the steels used were different. I agree with the qc on victorinox being more consistent never had a problem with them.

Thanks for a great review. The only thing that confuses me is why did they name it a survival tool if it doesn't have a wood saw?

Think like an engineer. The only places men like Tim need to survive are in an engine bay, a large workshop, and at family social gatherings. Seriously, though, the very very first ones were actually called the Pocket Tool Chest sold in Early Winters Catalogue.

I got a pst in a brown sheat,,,,, can’t see date inside handles,,,,, been carrying and using this thing for soooo many years,,,,,, Tool is in great shape;;;; wondering if it’ steal worth something ?

The PST didn't have any date stamps between 1983 and 1992 so yours will fall in there sometime. There were several tiny changes along those lines so best to check the chronological project on the mulitool.org forum. forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=5877.0

Tim carries a Charge Titanium for demos.
@MultitoolsandBlades2 жыл бұрын
Hi Krisztian. Yes, for some nail cutting demonstrations he rotated through the different models with the removable wire cutters. Seems to favourite the Charge Plus TTi on tour. But for a long time he has always carried a Rebar. Remember that the Charge is really just a modified Wave. The Wave was Ben Rivera's baby. Tim has always been close to the PST as it was his baby - the Rebar was the evolution of the PST. Thanks for watching.

While watching this I realized mine does not say pocket survival tool is that rare or normal everything is the same but that
@MultitoolsandBlades2 жыл бұрын
Hi theredpanda. Only the very very early model had "pocket survival tool" stamped into the side. From 1984 to 1998 they were blank.

And just like the original I had when in the Army, you have a good chance of losing a finger with the LE because there isn't a lock on the damn blade.

I hear you. I lost the pad of my thumb, courtesy of a Leatherman Micra : (
@TylerSnyder3052 жыл бұрын
How is that going to happen when it will just close against the the other handle and not contact your hand / fingers at all ?
@AJHart-eg1ys2 жыл бұрын
@@TylerSnyder305 It's more pronounced on other tools, but if you're using it with some force, the blade separates the two halves of the closed tool and can slide down on your fingers. Again, it's more pronounced of a flaw with other parts of the tool, but I think we can all agree that locks were a great improvement.
@TylerSnyder3052 жыл бұрын
@@AJHart-eg1ys I have not found them to make much difference for me, and I went from carrying a leatherman fuse every single day for about a decade to a Leatherman bond last year which doesn't have any locking tools. Maybe it's just me and how I'm using my multitool, because I only rely on them for minor quick tasks choosing to get into my toolbox for serious tasks.
@AJHart-eg1ys2 жыл бұрын
@@TylerSnyder305 The frustrating thing for me i that Leatherman seems to kind of jerk us around. Having locks is objectively better. I've certainly never heard any big complaints beyond it interfering with folding it back up with a single hand. Yet now we have the Bond as kind of their intro standard-sized model, which does not have the locks that were found on the Blast, which was discontinued but previously held that price-point spot. I can see maybe diversifying the tool set to be somewhat vocationally specific, but for the standard models it seems like evolution should be fairly simple to recognize and not backslide from. Next they'll give us a Bond with locks, calling it something else. Then by 2028 they'll just give us a box of flaked obsidian. 🤣

@MultitoolsandBlades You should have ahown the RIVOT DIFFERENCE IN THE SHEATHS. IT IS DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT IN QUALITY. THE OLD HAS INCREDIBLE BOMB PROOF RIVOTS DESIGNED TO LAST A ETERNITY VIRTUALLY. AND THE NEW HAS DISGRACEFULLY CRAP SHT QUALITY RIVOTS IN COMPARISON. I HAVE BOTH of course . Tiz a shame the quality went down with how there SHEATHS are put together. Because i quite likd the color combination of the brown. I also still to this day think it is a DISGRACEFUL MISTAKE TO WALK AWAY SPECIFICALLY FROM THIS LEEEEEEGENDARY LIGHT MULTI TOOL DESIGN. There is just SOMTHIN ABOUT IT MAN. U own them so i am sure you know EGZACTLY what im sayin. True shame. Keep them beauties overly oiled with food safe high quality mineral oil and they will stay MINTY till the end of your days!!!!!! Such beauties . INCREDIBLE video 🤙🤙👍👍👍😎

I wanted to focus more on the tools rather than the sheaths (which can easily be replaced) in order to keep the video down to just a few minutes. My experience working in Leatherman warranty is that they were all bad quality, even the new Ainsworth "premuim" sheaths have rivet issues. Can't judge a tool by the sheath. Check out my video on the Early Winters Catalogue leatherman if you have a few minutes free.
