See this, I remember watching Long Way Round as a teenager and seeing Ukraine. It was 2004, was the country was (and in ways still is) finding itself still. I missed it at the time, but there were signs, even then, that Ukraine was just a GOOD place. The Slovakian authorities arbitrarily held up the team until a bribe was paid, and they were so blatant they didn't care if it was recorded. The Ukrainian Border Guards tried, after 12 hours the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called the post and ordered them to let the team through, which showed more common sense. If you're gonna be corrupt, don't do it in the open, especially around cameras. I especially love when the Ukrainian police took them to "Igor" the Mafia Bosses house. They weren't in danger, the boss just wanted to meet them. Came down the stairs at one point with an unloaded Kalashnikov and a Guitar, and played a Ukrainian folk song for them. Basic artillery tactic from WW2. Same as what allied bombers used. First you use HE bombs to break up the houses and roofs. Then Incendiary munitions to light up the exposed interiors. Russia is basically doing "strategic bombing" but with artillery, i.e. it's trying to just flatten everything.
