I've been wait the railroad for 3 years and I still remember the face of the person killed by my train only days after I was out of training. The look of pure frozen terror. I found myself screaming in the cab "get out" over and over again as if they could hear me after the brakes were applied. It was right outside of Indianapolis at 2am. They eventually woke up from being frozen by fear and tried to backup off the tracks but backed into a dirt hill. My locomotive passed by and ripped off his front bumper, however one of the auto rack cars hooked the front and dragged the car into the side of a building past the crossing. He died from being crushed between the building. I still to this day wish I would've just taken 20 extra minutes to use the bathroom or something or even just left a few cars behind so the whole thing could've been avoided. It was hard for me to talk to my wife for weeks after that. Let things like this be a lesson. Regardless of who they are or what they did or who they have, there is ALWAYS, someone that's affected by these deaths. And it falls especially hard on us because we will almost always inevitably feel as if the blood was on our hands. Don't risk it. I case you need to hear it, I care about your life too much to wanna see this happen to you. Please take the extra few minutes. Your life means more to me than the alternative.

There was a suicide by train outside of Kansas City last year. The dude walked calmly up to the track, laid his head on the rail, and held eye contact with the engineer. I drove them back from the scene and they were not okay. Talked like they were though, trying to deal with it. IIRC, it was the 4th suicide for the engineer and the 2nd for the conductor.

I once rode in the cab of a CN freight train as a guest. We were going through a town and our speed limit was 20 mph for a short section of track. 3 kids decided to play chicken by sitting between the tracks and waiting for the last moment to vacate. Two kids quickly stood up and left, the third one stumbled to one knee and disappeared from view leaving us wondering if he got away. We then saw him throwing up as we went by. Had we been going just a bit faster he would have died. So, yes, people do stupid things around trains and some die because of it.

He didn’t survive and it really is hard for us railroaders to deal with this. We understand there’s nothing we could’ve done to prevent it but it’s just the carelessness of these individuals that really weighs on us. Crossing the tracks at such a high speed and getting struck on the fly with such perfect timing and accuracy is just bad luck resulting from distracted driving. Why should someone else pay for additional signage when the existing signage (railroad crossing at grade red lights and gates) is completely ignored by these reckless and irresponsible people anyway? We all learned in school when you approach a RR crossing " STOP, LOOK & LISTEN " its rather obvious in the video footage that the driver was apparently not paying attention or was distracted by a cell phone and drove right through the downed crossing gate. BOOM ......... Guess they will not make that mistake again. It is not the fault of the trains including Brightline, and rest solely on the drivers who fail to stop or go around downed gates to save a few moments. The average passenger train has about 20-30 seconds from the time the lights and gates activate until the train reaches the crossing. It takes usually less that one minute for the train to pass and still drivers in south Florida can't seem to understand trains run on rails and can't stop on a dime. When will the stupidity stop, is this natures way of weeding out stupid people ?????????

I thought the Brahma-type bulls were the sweetest things in the world! Silver Spurs Rodeo started somewhere about that time, but I always had to take a nap if I went with my cousins--the stretches we spent at the grounds were just too long for me. People still rode into town on horses at that time, and, in Kissimmee, there were plenty of hitching posts on Vine and on Main. I cannot recall the train ever causing problems. Something tells me it is more about drugs, high-decibel "music," and sorry attitudes today.
