Not only do they have to let the family know, but they also want to be able to get ahead of the investigation and figure out why this happened, maybe he wasn't supposed to have a gun, maybe he borrowed it, maybe he borrowed a car, maybe someone was aware of what he had planned and helped him. There's a reason he hasn't been identified despite knowing his age and about his warrant. They don't want him watching TV and hearing his name and cause him to go deeper into hiding. Although, it's a bit silly for them to go into the detail that he has a $3,000 warrant for his arrest along with announcing his age because how many 65 year olds have a 3,000 warrant for their arrest in that area. Basically what you're not being (correctly) told is that they have his identity it's just that they are not releasing it to the public so they always say the suspect has not been identified.

My heart goes out to this community and to those Deputies. I grew up in the area of one of the largest Sheriff's Offices in the nation, they have lost many good Deputies over the years and the Sheriffs gave statements with little emotion, because they are so far removed from the day to day job on the streets and the men and women who work them every day and night. To see a Sheriff struggling (and failing) to hold back tears and trying to keep himself from totally breaking down during the press conferencethis is just a good community and a good agency full of good people up to the top. May you rest in peace Deputy Bolter. We will take it from here.

Yeah I know.. I wish cops were trained to have more respect for human life. If so, he'd probly be alive...
