This used to be a big part of my childhood. While everything is so convenient now, nothing can beat the pleasure of going into a video store (to rent or to buy) almost every day after school and spending hours and hours looking at the boxes and reading synopsis at the back. And the feeling of being pissed off after you rented a totally shitty movie because you couldn't watch the trailer first. Netflix is convenient but I rarely ever find something that I'd like to watch. And if you don't have internet, you can't watch it anyway.
@tinyj45209 жыл бұрын
I upvoted you, 'cause I feel your pain. But I have to say: your on the internet. That's kind of meta. It's messed up to assume everyone had internet. You're posting this on the 'net. If you didn't have the internet, you couldn't post that we should account for the peeps not on the net. Which we won't do. Cause we're on the net... Why does everything smell like burnt pennies?

Really dug this video...I'm the manager of a independently owned video/record store in greenville, nc. We've been in business for 27 years and we're a staple of the town. the past few years have been tough for us on the video rental side of the store. RedBox is probably our biggest competition. Seems like there's one on every corner...but we've managed to hang in there thanks to guys like you who would rather experience a video store instead of a vending machine. Same goes for the music side of the store. Most of what we sell is new vinyl records. Anyways, big fan of all the Cinemassacre projects and i just wanted to say that i really appreciated this video. peace brothers.

Before Blockbuster came to town, there was Erol's Video. But forget about the movies - they had NES GAMES. I remember riding in the car with fingers crossed on both hands just PRAYING that the one beautiful, shiny gold copy of a little game called The Legend Of Zelda that they had would be there waiting on the shelf. I remember the sheer euphoria of standing there with that gold cart in my hand, my parents signing it out and riding home knowing that it was going to be a good weekend. One thing not mentioned was how much VHS owners relied on the rental market because the cost to own a VHS tape was crazy, like $75-$80. At some point they became relatively cheaper but owning a decent library of VHS tapes wasn't widely affordable until at least the late '80s early '90s.

Back when we went to video rental stores, we were participating in society - a social urban space, with other people. We are more than just nostalgic for these lost spaces; they were essential social experiences, discoveries of new ideas and interactions with other people. Both we and the urban landscape have suffered in the technological march of the marketplace; we are now less socialised, since it's possible to do most of your shopping now without having to leave your home. All that's left of the intimacy of the urban landscape is eating out, and I'm sure if we could get food on demand, piped through our computers, the major food companies would have pushed for that already.
@brianm28815 жыл бұрын
I'd say that for 90 percent of the people who ever went to a video store, the height of their social interaction in the place was picking out what they wanted, exchanging a brief pleasantry with the person behind the counter and then handing over the money.

+juntartful yea if you have a substandard hi fi with a cheap needle or scratched vinyl... tape is actually really high quality but like vinyl, maintenance is required, cleaning the heads, demagnetization and actually looking after it etc. the reasob why vinyl and tape are higher quality is because unlike cd and mp3 , it is the actual sound wave thats recorded (analog) not a computer reprisentation (digital) sadly ineducated people can't be bothered with that and people in general are dumb - like when they buy a stereo they buy the one that has lots of flashing lights that could land a plane and says words like 20000 Watts... the difference between 3 Watts and 10 is huge, but the difference between 10 and 100 is not hardly... I suppose you think mp3 is hi quality? it's useful for archiving but so compressed ! so there's an education for ya!

It's strange now to think about there being so many people in the world (teens and children) who grew up too late for video stores. I have tons of memories of the video store. Where I grew up in Missouri, the main place to go was the local joint called The Ice House, they had 3 separate small locations throughput the town. Or I would go to Hy-Vee for them. Then after a number of years we got a Hastings which became the new go-to place. We never had a Blockbuster there when I lived there (was a resident for 15 years, as late as 2005). But yeah we used to rent the actual video game consoles themselves before we owned them. It was such a treat to get to rent an SNES and a couple of games for the weekend, and once it released, the N64 with Goldeneye and Pilotwings and such. It's so strange to think about how long we went without Steam, or XBLA, or PSN. The video game equivalents to Netflix.

I remember going to video stores from the time I was 3 (in '99) until I was in high school (in 2010), and they sold Wii games, too. Then they just disappeared. You can still buy DVDs, but it's weird that they're gone

In the Philippines we still have these video stores.. :D

A local thrift store in my area had a sale on VHS tapes (10 cassettes for $1.00). I took advantage of that deal by buying 50+ cassettes for my collection (mostly animated movies, comedy, science fiction, action, many of my favorites).

I remember a few local 2-story video stores. So big you could get lost being a kid there.

One medium pizza, a rented VCR, 2 or 3 wrestling videos and 1 or 2 karate or horror movies = Best weekend ever as a kid!!!!

God I miss video stores. I actually worked at blockbuster for about a year before it went under. My biggest problem with them selection wise was they didn't have really any older films especially in the horror genre. Plus their rental rules were bizarre. I'm a fan of old school horror too and Hollywood Video/West Coast Video would have a whole wall of universal horror movies, even silent films. I wish video stores would come back. Great video!

Being an 80's kid, i remember always wanting to rent the movie "Krull" b/c the cover of it was so weird to me. Ahhh, i can still smell the pizza parlor and hear the sounds and see the lights of the arcade aross the way at the video store at the town mall.

I was born at the very end of all this. I remember going to the video store with my dad and picking out a PS2 game or something.Things were different then.

I remember when Family Video had the container on the side of the wall in between the exit and enter doors that had a melted tape in it. It had a sticker on it and it said that "This is what happens when you leave a tape in your care." Oh, those were the days.

I miss going to blockbuster and the nostalgia factor you get. I would go in there all the time when I was little with my parents to rent, and sometimes keep lol video games. The blockbuster at my old house when I was little was only a 2 min drive from my house

Large rental chains like Hollywood Video and Blockbuster were a croc. It was the little guy that was awesome. All the local guys. Their stores had an old school gritty retro feel. That's what this reminds me of. Not all that corporate flash bull. But the free popcorn was awesome!

What always blew my mind was when they would make the cassette a different color. I had a Douge movie that for some reason was on a bright orange cassette and that just made it the coolest VHS ever.

I'm with you guys there on the nostalgia, missed going into the video store with my older brother where we would of course ended up doing the following inside said store. 1. Rent video games (for Genesis, N64, and Dreamcast) 2. Look at all the movies and put it on a scale of it possibly being a good movie or a bad movie. Speaking of which at 2:55, their were some video stores that let you rent video game consoles they would give you this specially designed case which would hold the console, two controllers, cables, and the DC adapter. (The only one I rented was an original Playstation) I also missed the variety of Video Stores, the one's I most prominently went to was Blockbuster, Movie Gallery, and Hollywood Video. It sucked especially hard when Hollywood Video went out of business because they also had a video game store attached to the brand called GameCrazy where for CD based games they can buff your discs for you, and a lot of the employees for very sincere and not just trying to force you to buy something. I remember one occasion when me and my friend caught wind of how bad Sonic '06 was so we of course went over and brought a copy up to the counter, the employee at the cashier just looked at me and said, "Are you really sure you want to buy this? I mean this game is not just bad. Its really bad." Sad times we live in, well thank you for stirring up those memories and sharing yours.

Man I remember what my local video stores were: there were 2 blockbusters for sure even though I only went to 1 of them, there was a hollywood video in a nearby town even though I never got to go there & last in my town there was one called Movie Gallery which I went to only like once & that was it I don't remember ever seeing a TLA at all whatsoever. Then on the other hand, I didn't care about watching movies too often when I was growing up & now that I watch this it all comes back to me & makes me wonder what if now. Video games on the other hand I never even knew about video games until middle school, like I never knew they even existed or what they were like I didn't know jack shit about video games. So I did not get to grow up with that like most people did, so I missed out on those early game eras, like when the NES, super nintendo & Nintendo 64 were in their prime I missed out on that cuz I was never exposed to video games until middle school. So when I watch cinemassacre videos like this for example it makes me think about how I wish I would've grown up

Here in Amarillo we "had" Blockbuster's and Hollywood Video as well as local Mom n' Pop video/game rental stores and even a company called Cox Video which carried even Neo Geo games for rent (I know gasp right!) . Unfortunately they were all run out by a business by the name of Hastings due to it being a video, video game, comics, novelty, book, and music store which still is here today, and what blows my mind is at 31 years old with a child of my own I still find my friends and family as well as myself and daughter still flocking into Hastings every Friday for new releases and for those who might want to cheer *this one is for you and me James and all the Megaman fans out there* my 3 year old daughter is in love with the series and even has her own plush Megaman and Protoman blasters complements of Hastings lol
