A few weeks ago i found a JVC SR-VS30 at a local Goodwill store. It had a price of $12.99 and tested good as it powered up and played a VHS tape good. Took it home and cleaned both the VHS heads and the DV heads. Pop in a DV tape and it played very nicely with no issues. This model was made in 2002 and retailed around $1,400 US. I always wanted one but that price was way out of my range. I just got in a NOS JVC RM-51 remote that is the original one for this model.

Just as SVHS-C tapes will not play on VHS machines even with an adapter. They require an SVHS machine. Such a shame they never made DVHS-C camcorders.

Just buy an 8mm VCR. They’re not that hard to find. And stay clear of anything from ION. That’s all junk.

Not strictly true that there are no adaptors apart from VHSC. There is an adaptor to allow miniDV tapes to be played in DVCPRO decks. I would never recommend transferring to DVDs, they get lost and damaged and are poor for editing. I transfer virtually everything to video files on hard disk now. (I need a new logo with the DVD removed!).

Especially transferring from Digital8 or MiniDV to DVD. DV is about 1 GB per 5 minutes (~30 Mb/s), while DVD maxes out at 13.5 minutes per GB (10 Mb/s). There's a massive quality loss.

You're wrong, you can playback miniDV tapes in a DVCAM deck. It will take the smaller miniDV tapes and the larger DV tapes.

Thanks for the info. We just bought a machine that will transfer our vhs tapes to dvd. However, we do have several mini's and 8mm's. Not sure how in the world we're gonna get those transferred over to dvd (especially since we don't have the camcorders anymore). YIKES!

There are no converters to play 8mm tapes on a VCR. To play them, you'll need an 8mm tape deck, or an 8mm video compatible camcorder. For more information, check out our website in the description.

What is that red tab on the side of the adapter for? It seems like it blocks you from putting it into the VCR as it only moves one way. While the tape is being ejected is when it would be pushed out of the way.

Do you own a camcorder that records in this format? If possible, just pop the tape into the camcorder and use the required transfer cord (firewire, RCA/USB, etc.) in order to stream the contents from the camera to the computer.

There is an 8mm adapter..I used to have one. I am sick because somewhere along the line I have lost it and gave my camcorder away several years ago. I had both the 8mm and the vhs c adapters.

It's best to record analogue video direct to DVD using a recorder. Do NOT use a computer unless you can capture in 60fps and burn it that way to DVD. My Magnavox recorder also latches onto the video signal well, being able to perform TBC fixes and render bendy video very watchable.

That may be so, as long as your end goal is DVD, and you aren't doing any editing. If you intend to upload the video online, or if you need to edit before putting the finished video on DVD, then it needs to go through your computer anyway... and the compression on DVD doesn't always look so good when it's copied back onto your computer.

DVD can't even do 60 fps. Transferring to computer is fine so long as the capture device is good. Even a MiniDV or Digital8 camcorder will be great for most people's use as an ADC.

@@BigBlok502 DVD, yes, but DVD-R is debatable. I have DVD-Rs that have become unreadable, and VHS tapes from the early ‘80s that still play perfectly.

What does that even mean? DVD Video isn't HD and standard MiniDV (DV) will be SD anyways. If it's HDV, then it will be HD but transferring it to DVD makes no sense.

It is logical that VHS has an adapter because it is the biggest and was the most used format which needed compact version.

JVC years ago made several model standalone player/recorders...I have a JVC SR-VS 30 I bought at a thrift store many years ago for $10.00 and works like new...The DV and Super VHS decks both record and play awesome after a a good head cleanings...

No. Why would you want that? MiniDV is a superior format to VHS. You'll need a MiniDV VCR or camcorder and a Firewire input on your computer.

A VHS-C tape is a VHS-C tape. The brand of the tape should make no difference as to it fitting in an adaptor, and they’re functionally all the same. Personally I would recommend the ones made by JVC as they tend to be better made than those from other brands.

The company that introduces adaptors/players for Mini DV, 8mm, Hi8, & Micro MV tapes will make some major coin, & after the frustration all us consumers have experienced, the profit will be well deserved. Until then, my catch phrase: "Technology; the inconvenient convenience," still applies.

8mm VCRs have been a thing for a long time, and the company that introduced them is Sony.

Adaptors will be impractical as it would need to be a VCR that slots into another VCR. That's not needed as players just exist. DV/DVCAM and Video8/Hi8/D8 decks have always been around. MicroMV needs to be played on a camera.

No, the tapes are only readable on a Digital8 camcorder. You'll need a Digital8 camcorder and firewire input on your computer.

Check the battery. Mine has one AA battery. If it doesn't have sufficient voltage, red tab will stay out.

My dad's jvc gr-dvl357 just came out of it's case after like 8 years, the battery seems dead and plugging it in will just make the charging led flicker like crazy... Any ideas on how to repair it? Just run the composite video and analog audio output of the DVD or computer to the input of an 8mm VCR, pop in a blank tape and hit record.

They're the same width of tape. That's it. The signals are recorded differently between the two systems so they cannot interoperate.

8mm film needs to be scanned before you can watch it on a TV or computer. If you have 8mm _video_ (Video8, Hi8, D8), you can just play that in the appropriate camera or VCR and it'll play on you computer and/or TV.

There are adapters for MiniDV to DV. This isn't that helpful because most DV decks will take both DV and MiniDV cassettes.

Are there VHS tape adapters for Hi8, and or MiniDV tapes? I have a usb cable that is made to plug into a VHS player and the computer to digitize the footage. I was hoping to find a VHS adapter for Hi8's or MiniDV tapes. I would prefer to not pay the digitizing fees, and just do it myself.

Did you not watch the video?!? The answer is NO. You need to plug that USB cable into a Hi8 player to digitize Hi8 tapes. With MiniDV you have the option of doing the same thing with the analog outputs of a MiniDV player, but since that tape is already digital, you will get better results if you directly import the digital signal from the player using FireWire.

Yes sealed ones. I never buy used ones. Some department stores here in the US still carry VHS mostly Sony. Not sure if your from the US?. I found a few SVHS tapes. I'm hoping to find more since i recently picked up this JVC SVHS/DV deck.
