There WAS a time, WAY back in the DAY, when I could say I was one of twelve guys in the world (women don't go for this music too much) that had ALL of The Captain's records. Not now. Seems like his reputation is growing, as it should. Another 50 years and he'll be universally recognized as one of the towering geniuses of the 20th century, based on his singing, his songwriting, his poetry, and his painting. There's no doubt in my mind about this.

The female personnel manager at the (classical) orchestra where I worked for many years was a genuine Captain Beefheart fan, and one of the best reasons to work there. Didn't surprise me when I read that only about 2% of Beefheart fans are women, she's that special. Love ya still, Ms. Haight

My dad had a Beefheart-obsessed flatmate when he was younger, and he became a fan of Shiny Beast as a result. He played me the album when I was a kid and I instantly loved it, so I got Trout Mask Replica for Christmas when I was 12. It completely changed my perception of music and I've been a lifelong fan of Beefheart for over 20 years now. Many times down the line I've tried to introduce people to it and I think maybe 2 or 3 of them actually liked it. It's one of those things you have to have the right sense of humour and escapist mindset to appreciate I think.

@@Sphat90I hear that. I was exposed to Mothermania: Best of the Mothers when I was 5 years old and learned how to work the RCA Portable Record Player my older siblings had. By the time I started First Grade in school, I knew the words to Duke of Prunes and Brown Shoes Don't Make It. I liked the Beatles, too. Hah!

In the history of music, few songs are better examples of the kind of a balancing act that it takes to fully express the strange idea of the chaotic rhythms of the universe. Pachuco Cadaver is certainly one of these songs.

First time Frownland came on...I had no frame of reference. Even as an established Zappa head. I put it aside, for a bit. It was around 1980, and Doc At The Radar Station was out. So I entered thru that door. Then when you read the stories, see the band interviews years later. It was like another southern California cult, only small and filled to capacity. (I suspect Sun Ra was running a similar bizness model in Philly. Heh heh.) "What this world needs is a good two-dollar room, and a good two-dollar broom."

I posted here many years ago, but, there is a video that just came into my YT feed from Rick Beato's feed. It's titled The WEIRDEST Pop Song of All Time. I had to look. Didn't think it really would be. Sure enough, it was Josie by Steeley Dan. I said to myself, Not even close! It's time to get into some truly weird music that I've been digging more than 50 years!! Thanks Captain for helping to create a world that's not too boring to tolerate 🤷♂️

I was looking through reissues of the album on discogs and as I saw ''Trout Mask Replica (1979)'' ''Trout Mask Replica (1984)'' ''Trout Mask Replica (1991)'' ''Trout Mask Replica (2005)'' I noticed that this album could have come out in any decade and still be new and not feel out of place as some relic from the past, the record is so original and ahead of it's time that it fits perfectly in the late 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s, hell maybe even 2010s and 2020s! It'll take a long time for this album to date.

One thing is for sure...you can't be a sissy and admit that you love Captain Beefheart. The slings, the arrows, the darts follow you around from people with cold lizard stares of disbelief and casual calculated hissed laughs will echo and also you'll have to tolerate with utter boredom those who arrived late to the bandwagon singing his praises after not "getting him" for years... But those who were onto Beefheart from the start just KNOW he's the real deal- as they are.
