Videogames That Fell Off

In the past several years, theres been a trend of videogames that rise to popularity, and then fall off into oblivion. I'm going to be talking about games like pokemon go, overwatch, call of duty, minecraft, among us, fall guys, splitgate, multiversus, all the way to newer games like lethal company and palworld. The goal of this video is to explain the trend, why I think these games went on their downfall, and what I think new games need in order to succeed in the modern era of gaming. 1 game I would add is Halo. Halo used to be a huge cultural phenomenon and people would line up late at night just to get the game. However, people didn’t want to play the game after Halo 4 came out. And by 2015, Halo was dead. It is kind of making a comeback with Halo Infinite, but it will not reach the player counts of peak Halo 3.

People starting to stop playing Halo in 2010 with reach, Reach got removed from MLG (Which Halo started). 4 being a COD clone didn't help and its campaign which made Master Chief more human which was controversial. Then M$ messing up the the Xbox one launch which lead to most people going to PS which means Halo 5 (Still isn't on PC), had a far lower playerbase to pick from already. And now Halo Infinite was just god awful which its microtransactions, lack of content, worse gunplay, it's lack of splitscreen in campaign (which 343 promised).

As an Overwatch fan since 2016, I don’t think it’s anywhere near *dead* but it definitely fell off. Originally, Overwatch 2 was gonna be a PVE game. Giving fans the massive story mode to expand Overwatch’s amazing lore and story which is something people like me had been asking YEARS for. And the PVP was meant to be the side content, Overwatch 1 players and Overwatch 2 players could play together. Meaning Overwatch 1 would still be supported, getting the new graphics, UI, New Heroes, Maps, etc. While Overwatch 2 was the paid PVE game that offered PVP (kinda like Titanfall 2). And what they showed us with the story mode looked genuinely incredible. A fully fledged story mode with skill trees and new enemies, a mode called Hero Missions where you could fight in 100 different scenarios to gain XP and upgrade your skill tree, it looked awesome. But then the game came out, no PVE in sight. Instead of sticking to the original plan, the money hungry executives at Blizzard decided to ditch the story mode (which the devs had been working 4 years on) and instead turn the game into another Free To Play microtransaction simulator. On launch, Overwatch 2 was barely different. Sure there was a new engine, new UI, a couple new heroes, maps, and gamemodes, but that was it. And we find out months later, that PVE wasn’t just delayed but was CANCELLED ENTIRELY. The sole purpose of Overwatch 2’s existence was just GONE. And overwatch 1 was completely deleted. It doesn’t exist.

@@808savion Long post incoming, sorry in advance Adding onto this, the battle pass system in Overwatch 2 is a bastardization of the battle pass that added to Fortnite's popularity. While Fortnite's battle pass today is nowhere near as good as it used to be, it's still a good system. While lazy collabs and the decreasing amount of skins per pass are nuisances on Fortnite's battle pass today, Epic can at least to this day say that their battle pass and shop have, never really been pay-to-win. There was a controversy over superhero skins for some time, but that issue seems to have been resolved by now (as well as certain pickaxes and gliders that were bugged/unintentionally p2w, but only slightly). On OW2's battle pass, every new hero is unlocked for all players at level 45. Unless you paid for the premium pass, in which case you get all new heroes on level 1. I kid you not, there is a clip of someone leaving a competitive match, only to rejoin the game after unlocking Mauga by buying the battle pass. Mauga was an extremely OP hero at the time. SIDE NOTE: Most new heroes in OW2 were OP on launch. The ones that were underwhelming were quickly buffed to become meta. Most of these heroes didn't get nerfed until midway through the season, when most free-to-play players were reaching level 45. I argue the battle pass system motivates Blizzard to make their new heroes as OP as possible on launch, so that players give in to the temptation of buying the pass to get the new heroes sooner.

Overwatch fan since 2017 here. Couldn't have been more dissapointed when PvE was anncouned as cancelled. Also, instead of launching the atrocious game that is Overwatch 2, they literally could have continued updating and supporting Overwatch 1. Overwatch 2 released with like 9 months worth of content updates for Overwatch 1 (with new heroes every 3 months). Of course, we didn't know back then that Pve was cancelled and that instead of a "brand new game" we would get a subpar content update. I'm just sad to see a game like Overwatch 1 that I really like with and has so much potential, destroyed by a lust for money.

Minecraft is never gonna die in my opinion, the one you talked about in your videos is about just casual players who only play survival and if you take into consideration the plethora of other things that exist in minecraft like PvP, Parkour, Building, Redstone, mods the possibilities are quite literally endless. Me personally I've been playing minecraft PvP for years and never not even once got bored. It might seems pretty simple at first but oncr you get deeper into it you'll know how much skill it requires to master it and I'm not even taking about public servers like Hypixel, Wynncraft and a bunch of other.

fall guys falloff is much more of an interesting story looking outside of playercount. They added a battle pass and v-buck currency. they started vaulting maps for months at a time they stopped making new original maps and instead are using the level creator which is the epitome of laziness which kinda killed the fun for me, i used to play this game all the time.

Splitgate is a very interesting case of a dev studio doing exactly what players say they want and their game still got abandoned by those very same players. They realized they couldn’t support a game and release more content if they weren’t making any money on so that’s why we never got more updates which kinda sucks. As someone a little more informed on overwatch: I've never seen such a sure bag fumbled so badly. Even during OW1 blizzard was forcing the competetive scene onto the game instead of letting it grow naturally, and it only got worse as they continued to add content. As soon as they announced OW2 the first game was kind of dead for those reasons. And when that game did finally release pretty much everything it initially promised was a monkey's paw at best, especially what they did to pve. I know what I'm about to say is a meme in of itself, but it really says something when a similar 15+ year old game that hasn't been supported for much of that time and has so many of it's own issues, has maintained more respect than what two games could do in half of that time.

The worst call from Among Us was to cancel Among Us 2 to work on content on Among Us 1. Content never was the problem, I feel like an Among Us 2 release could hit hard Remember Spellbreak ? As a 2k+ hour overwatch player who quit in early ow 2 I believe the game suffered from a few issues. 1. A terrible relationship between the game devs and players. 2. The greed with having a game basically re release with no innovation just to add the FOMO based battle pass. 3. A hyper competitive community which has a lifeless esports scene. 4. Stale meta games that would last far too long driving even competitive players away due to most of them being brain dead strategies.

You asked for the story on OW2, I know it inside out but I tried very very hard to make it as brief as possible : Basically, the game's foundations are very flimsy, characters and ideas/systems aren't well designed, up to a certain breaking point where Brigitte is released, the GOATS meta appears and the DPS become useless, the tank role is no fun to play, and the supports are too strong. Kaplan is an old-fashioned guy, he thought that Overwatch could stand on its own, like Team Fortress 2, except that we're in an era where everyone expects an exclusively online game to be treated like League of Legends, with regular maps/characters. Overwatch wasn't made for that. Kaplan's project was to potentially make Overwatch 1 as we had it, then Overwatch 2 with the big PvE side, and finally Overwatch 3 as an MMO to do the Project Titan that they originally wanted to do at Blizzard but had cancelled. The thing is, with Overwatch 1, given the global success that it was, he'd already started to get slapped on the wrist by Activision execs for coming up with such a masterpiece with so little monetization. So, as Overwatch 2 was going to require a lot of money, and covid had arrived as well, so things were going more slowly than expected, it was an opportunity to re-release the game with a new monetization, doing the minimum like all service games. It's a very very brief summary, I could do a long essay about all that (maybe someday I'll do). Basically Overwatch was a miracle on it's own and it was bound to fall. That's why I always said that a game like Overwatch 2 was what it needed. You'll have people say that « oh they stopped making content for 2 years and that's the issue » but it was already a joke by then. They NEEDED to rework the fundamentals of the game, hence the 5v5, the many reworks. The promises were so great, if Blizzard was alive and not used like a puppet by Activision, then maybe we would have had what Kaplan wanted to make. Truly a sad story. What's crazy is the execs that didn't believed that PvE would have success. I mean, look at fking Helldivers 2 lmao. I call this game « What Overwatch 2 should have been » because it's just so freaking great

Blizzard is definitely most of the reason Overwatch fell off, but for me personally, the streaming community had way too much influence over the rest of the community and they just wanted to butcher the game so that it was ONLY fun at the highest level. You literally had people complaining about stuff that didn't even affect them or 99% of other players.

But the channel before this was kind of dead and i was stuck in a niche i didnt want to keep making videos for so i ultimately decided to make this channel and start from scratch. I think it just depends what type of videos you make. But the #1 advice i would give is that if you do make a new channel, try to plan out what kind of content u want to make for the rest of your channel because its hard and takes a lot of time to switch content. Also i honestly think you’re videos are doing pretty good considering what the videos are about because its pretty specific. I think if you do want to expand your audience size it might help to make videos a little more broad that theres more if an audience for. You could always try posting a few videos trying out new things and if it dont work try a new channel. Myb for the long ass response if u ever got questions u can ask on discord

Fortnite has a very dumb practice of starting new chapters when they go on vacation leaving their first seasons buggy and neglected. They clearly weren't ready to release those extra modes yet and they all should have been pushed back 6 months to a year

The most strange fenomen is how the fuck war thunder didn't die. I think Splatoon' is kinda in the same position as Minecraft right now. Many people still enjoy it, but there's also alot of people who feel the game's been getting stale and hasn't lived up to it's potential. Things like netcode issues, underwhelming new maps and weapon kits, an update cycle that leaves alot of people dissatisfied, challenges being a flop for many people, the dlc not being as lore heavy as Splatoon 2's dlc, etc.

The reason why Overwatch truly fell off is because of the lies and distrust from the developers, and I say this as someone who had been with the game since 2017. Overwatch 2 was announced in 2019 and from 2020 and 2021 Overwatch had a significant drought in new content, with there being only ONE new hero in two years as opposed to three new heroes per year. They claimed this was because "they were working on the sequel" but when you look at Overwatch 2 some people could say that it's the same game with better graphics and new heroes/maps, and when the game launched... yeah that was pretty much it. They also made Overwatch 2 Free-To-Play and replaced the iconic Loot Boxes with the generic Battle Pass and In-Game Store. The only way to get items was by opening Loot Boxes or buying them with coins, and Loot Boxes were earned through playing and coins could be earned through Loot Boxes, so everything in the game could've been unlocked over time. Then with Overwatch 2, a single legendary skin for a single hero costs over $20. In the trailers they had announced an Overwatch story mode which continues off the few missions that we got in the first game (for free) and then had waited almost a year to deliver it. And when the time came, they revealed that they do not have the money or resources in order to deliver their original vision on making a full Overwatch story mode (this is coming from a multi-billion dollar company.) However, they did add a few story missions to slightly fulfil their promise, but put them behind a paywall. I remember when Overwatch 2 came out, they had a "Watchpoint Pack" which promised early access to the story mode when it had released. I bought this pack for $40 and when the missions came out, I was given nothing. I partly do not blame the Overwatch developers as I assume they were forced to shut it down by the higher-ups. On top of that, they completely changed the casual format, making the game more and more strict over time. When I started playing you were able to have 6 tracers or all 6 healers on the same team, but then they removed the ability to have two or more of the same hero on a team, and then in 2019 they added "Role Queue" which brought the game to 2 Tanks, 2 Damage, and 2 Support heroes. It led to lots of divide in the community. With Overwatch 2's release, they lowered it to 5v5 with only one tank and removed almost all stun/knockback abilities, which allowed even noobs to ensure they could do well. All of these changes were only made because the content creators and esports players whined about it to the developers, they completely lost touch with the community and only see them as piles of cash. So all in all, I can say that me and many others were lied to and decepted by Blizzard. I unfortunately was dumb enough to fall for their predatory marketing schemes and I'm glad I quit the game last year when Season 4 released. This is why Overwatch fell off, but it is sadly by no means dead. I guarantee if it wasn't free it would be though.
