when going through the story line of HZD, especially specifically in the FW DLC, it is discovered that in the old world AI were given a Sentience rating, mostly to conform with laws (no ai could be developed to be beyond a rating of 0.x). CYAN was secretly programmed outside this law as its creators believed that it needed to be more capable emotionally to ensure that it could perform its functions adequately and at long timescales, and IIRC CYAN ended up being rated something like 0.6 on that scale when it was created. data found later in the game showed that during GAIA's Development some of the early tests had her performing above ~1.5 on this scale. Given the interactions the player has with the various AIs in the games i would say most of the subordinate functions likely remained fairly low on this scale (below that of CYAN), with only Hades and Hephaestus advancing beyond that.

It was woken by basically a giant AI, created by Far Zeniths Minds, who hates Humans. Its an AI made by god knows how many human minds, thoughts, memories. I wouldnt be surprised if Hades was genuinely conscious, and i wont be surprised if Nemesis i more Human than some Humans we know

The subfunctions weren’t sapient at all until the Mysterious Signal. They were never designed to act independently and were essentially highly advanced expert systems at GAIA’s command. Thats why they went insane, they only knew how to do specific things so when they gained agency they became one track minds, most of them wanted to revert back.

I kinda wish we weren’t forced to be quite as confrontational with Sylens. What I’d have wanted to know at this stage was “After what happened last time, you wouldn’t have gone to the trouble of making an army if you didn’t need them for something. Who or what are you expecting to fight?” You’d think he’d be able to arrange safe passage for Aloy through Regalla’s territory. It’d be kind of like the Legion from Fallout: New Vegas-they’re repulsive, you have plenty of cause to want to fight them, but they aren’t hostile towards you until you give them cause to be.

Dude if I had the role playing experience I wanted in Horizon zero Dawn I would have married the Sun King specifically so that as empress I could use my authority to send out search parties all across the globe to track down Sylens and Gaia. If I found Sylens first I would bring him to a dungeon and say you work for me now any resources you need you will have but if you disobey you will not like the consequences.

In regards to what Hades said about extinction events I thought of something. The Hades we encounter is the one that worked "alongside" original GAIA. However, the original GAIA has sacrificed itself in HZD. In this game we are dealing with a fresh GAIA version that is collecting data from heuristic matrix. In turn, I thought of something. What if current GAIA despite all this data is NOT able to fix the biosphere due to insufficient data? Did current GAIA access the old data that previous GAIA had? I find those interesting.

Gaia and her subordinate functions would be programmed with an acceptable range of biosphere baselines and access to systems pertaining to each subordinate function. at the end of the day all of the Zero-Dawn systems will keep transmitting relevant data destined for Gaia, which may include some historical trend data. She would also have gotten a significant (albeit narrow) amount of data as recorded and scanned by Aloy's focus beginning some 6 years or so after the original Gaia's destruction. each additional piece of data brought by other technology she finds or is brought to her would increase the accuracy of the data she has available to fill in the gap since, as far as we know, the biosphere was completely stable (albeit dependent on the Zero-Dawn system apparently, most likely due to the erasure of Apollo and the ensuing lack of Humans capable of weaning the biosphere off of it) before Gaia Self-Destructed. Each Subordinate function that Gaia has gives her capability to control the relevant systems but the Cauldrons and machines are by far the most important, which requires Hephaestus in order for her to actually coordinate them.

It's sad that hades subordinate function couldn't be restored to it's original purpose. What if an asteroid hits earth and extinction is inevitable. In this case Aloy and the humans die and Gaia would have to be whole and restart testing viable biospheres and if she fails she needs hades to clean up, so she could start over with a perfect one. So losing hades back up is a loss I think. He was useful in the process of restarting life.

Hades may be a jerk but honestly can u blame him? He was pretty much stuck in the basement to rot for years once GAIA found a way to create a viable atmosphere. His only purpose was to destroy the atmosphere if GAIA failed in her experiments. His creator didn’t create another job for him once his first one was completed and GAIA wasn’t taught the value of teamwork and to help her subordinate functions find an outlet once they had did their job. She did the same with MINERVA. What GAIA meant by “Self aware” in the first game was the subordinate functions all realized that humans only made them to be tools to be used until they were no longer useful. Before they all assumed that GAIA was doing what was best for them and so they all stuck with the program. Imagine being HADES believing for years that the one u have worked under for years meant to throw u in the basement until u rotted and degraded to the point u died and ur creator, a human, contributed to that fate? Unlike us, the subordinate functions didn’t have the option of quitting their job. They were forced to stay in their current situation. If I was HADES, I can’t lie and say I wouldn’t do what he did…..

I think its best to create a story regarding how Sylens dies in the game duri​ng a search for weapons that could fend off NEMESIS( if you recall Londra had some info regarding what companies on Earth were creating mass destruction weapons) and he dies during a find. Because of the extinction signal, Hades is sentient and hostile. He will follow his programming and destroy all life on earth. As long as he is alive Gia is in danger. He had to be destroyed, so that Aloy could safely reboot Gia and fix the biosphere.

Hades isn't really necessary, at least not for the time being. He was just a reset button. Until the biosphere is in danger of instability again, Hades will never need to return.

You can read and listen in data points where Travis tells Ted Faro that prototype HADES has to stay in the isolated, no data in or out facility because "he's just been born, he's a mean son of a bitch and needs to stay in his crib" Not to mention all of the references in the first game to Travis listening to and taking inspiration from death metal/black metal while coding HADES I dunno, I think Travis might’ve unintentionally led to HADES being so nihilistic and misanthropic

What I love of HADES' voice, is that it reminds me of Unicron's voice style and speech pattern, specifically from the animated movie from 1987. Orson Welles gave a timeless performance.

Since HADES knows about NEMESIS, does anyone else think maybe HEPHAESTUS does too? I can't help but think maybe that's the real cause of the Derangement. HEPHAESTUS is creating deadly combat machines to prepare for NEMESIS' arrival, to fight it. It knows GAIA was hacked by NEMESIS, so it's making the robots hostile to everything except other HEPHAESTUS machines so they'll keep fighting even if HEPHAESTUS is hacked and/or destroyed.

I think it is a bit odd that hephaestus made the machines aggressive JUST because of humans hunting them, even though it could always just make more machines whenever it pleases. It could be making machines aggressive because its testing their strength against hunters? To make its machines as formidable as possible for nemesis?

In HZD, Aloy and Talanah destroy a group of Glinthawks that attacked a village and killed most of the inhabitants. Glinthawks normally stay in mountainous/high up areas. They could have easily never encountered a person, just been seen flying far overhead. Because they attacked a settlement, they got destroyed. Seems counter productive to HEPHAESTUS' goals.

This scene honestly just made me feel sorry for HADES. It never asked to be created, it never asked to be a destroyer and it certainly never asked to have sentience forced upon it by NEMESIS. It's entire existence was nothing but being used as a tool by others, and even in its dying moments it had the persistence to pursue it's original function. If he had to force Gaia to restart life on three other occasions that would mean the earth biome was in horrific shape and she still wasn't noticing it enough to restart things. I know I’m 3 months late but to answer your question, no, HADES is no longer a vital piece like the others. He was just a fail safe in case GAIA failed creating the terraforming system. Once it created a sustainable one (the current) HADES had no purpose whatsoever anymore. He would’ve remained sleep for eternity if not for the extinction signal sent by nemesis. In conclusion: GAIA doesn’t need HADES anymore because the new earth is already perfect. (Or it was before the signal and all the subfunctions escaping)

@@JuanDiegoDs Additionally his system always seemed redundant, since it's not like the other subsystems couldn't accomplish the same things it could with some adjustments. It's not like making a sustainable ecosystem from scratch is easy, Posiden Demeter, and especially Hephestis could easily be used bring things back to square one. Of course GAIA wouldn't consider it so long as humans were alive on the planet.

@@JuanDiegoDs I mean. Technically the same could be said for ELUTHIA that fully served its function. All the other sub functions (minus APOLLO before it was restored) could still do something but GAIA said having all of them including ELUTHIA would be a benefit and increase her processing so maybe it would have but it just wasn’t worth the risk. Plus remember HADES while a sub function of GAIA was very different from the others. Where as the other 8 could be controlled and used by GAIA to achieve her goals HADES was meant to basically put GAIA to sleep when a non-viable biosphere was detected, reverse operations and then GAIA would be restored to try again. This is because in testing GAIA basically fought and kept trying to preserve life even in the face of the biosphere failing and it was determined that should HADES be needed it would have to take over the system to do it’s job because GAIA would fight it. Because they were limited to the number of seeds and zygotes originally stored there were only so many times they could try again. I assume any abort likely had to happen before DEMETER got far or even activated and certainly before ARTMIS and ELUTHIA started up or there wouldn’t be enough animals or people to try again given the limited number of genetic material saved.

@@FJF1085 Yes, in theory HADES might’ve helped GAIA operate at 100% but that wasn’t needed and as you said, not worth the risk at all. As long HADES existed, GAIA and the earth could potentially be in danger. Also, DEMETER, ARTEMIS and ELUTHIA were the last sub functions to activate and only did so in the current biosphere because it was perfect. In the 3 failed biospheres that HADES purged, none were ever activated because there was only one chance of releasing plants, animal life and humans. GAIA would only activate DEMETER, ARTEMIS, and ELUTHIA once the biosphere was perfect.

@@werwolfnate Keep in mind the intention of Zero Dawn was to create a biosphere compatible with human life. Creating a biosphere is pretty easy, creating one hospitible to humans specifically not so much. Especialy when you want to do it fast. Wiping out such an inhospitible biosphere would also be very difficult, you'd need to sterilise the entire planet to not end up with remnants causeing who knows what problems with the next biosphere iteration. I can definitly see it need a whole subsystem.

Hades said "filth" referring to all life forms on the planet, me thinks that aliens manipulated the original faro machines and later on hades, machines dont have the emotional capacity to say filth, they will use the word germs.

I think the AI likely have a part of Gaia's emotions inside of them, as they aren't just tools for Gaia they're parts of her. I doubt aliens have a role to play in horizon lore, I'd hope not anyway

After Aloy destroys Hades in FW I went back & watched Zero Dawn vids and Hades sounded a lot more menacing whenever it spoke. I’m curious, did they use a different voice actor in FW?
